Modern Coffee is a cute, tucked away spot that offers quality coffee with a non-pretentious attitude. After having been to my fair share of hipsters-centric coffee spots (and having worked at one myself) it was really nice to be able to stop into Modern for a really delicious cup of coffee.Modern has an easy-going vibe with simple but interesting decor. They offer a wide variety of single origin coffees, served a variety of different ways. Being an avid coffee lover, I was pleasantly surprised with their offerings and the reasonable prices for the drinks.A great place to grab an afternoon cup of joe, hot or cold, to break up the workday!

Modern Coffee looks like the vision you have of the perfect 2010s urban coffee shop, with a strong brew to match. While this is a small space, ownership has done their best to maximize seating, giving the shop a cozy, rather than cramped, feel. This space is one of my favorite places to work. The coffee is strong and flavorful -- perhaps a bit too strong if youre not a regular drinker (according to other reviews) but there isnt much need to comment further on the coffee. Its exactly what youre looking for in the morning. Its worth noting that Modern Coffee offers a small range of baked goods each day. The food good, although nothing special. Typical coffee shop fare. This is a great coffee shop to work, or just to get your morning cup of joe. I highly recommend it.

I've never had the urge to leave a review at a Peets Coffee shop before. I just had the most amazing experience. I bought a Chemex drip coffee maker along with some filters and two bags of coffee. At first I wasn't sure what to buy, luckily I happened to come across one of the most knowledgeable coffee connoisseurs I've ever met. I was super impressed with their knowledge, conversational skills, and how patient they were with me. I have auditory issues sometimes and they made me feel extremely comfortable even though there were moments I had trouble understanding or comprehending certain things that were being said. I don't remember their name unfortunately but I do remember that they had a blue shirt on and they were very kind. If you know who I am talking about they definitely deserve a raise as they seem to be a key employee. Everyone else seemed equally as nice that was working there but this individual really stood out to me. If I ever am able to remember their name I'll update this post.

I always go to this place but today however was different. My normal blonde haired lady wasnt here. It was the short dark hair heavy set white lady that made me feel unimportant. I waited alongside a man for the coffee to get ready (longer than usual), the lady handed the older white man a convenience card, looked right at me and said nothing and gave me nothing. I was waiting the same amount if time as he was but I guess I just wasnt important enough? Once my coffee was done, she handed it to me, didnt say sorry or anything. But once she handed it to this man, she said Im so sorry for your wait. I felt completely undermined at this time and did not go back since. Im not saying Ill never go back l, but my experience with her in the mornings has never been great!

Ordered 3 half pounds of house ground for Melita drip. When I got home the ground was too coarse. Called and was told I would have to make another trip in soon to get replacement. They needed to be able to resell it. That alone is troubling that they would resell a food product that I have in my possession. My schedule is such that it is extremely difficult to arrange time to make another trip there so I couldn't say I would be able to make it in within a few days. So too bad for me! Also, I had already poured one of the half pounds into my container which is when I discovered the Coarseness, so Manager wants to resell that????Manager wouldn't give me her name. I've been going to Peets in other locations for decades and never had a problem. Also, these were each put in one pound bags. When I picked up coffee, I could see the person at the grinding machine having problems using it and asked for assistance. Obviously he needs better training and I shouldn't have to be inconvenience because of it. I didn't get a receipt either that should have been put in the bag.

Terrible management at this location now. She is very aggresive and has no known customer service skills that i am aware of. Which is sad because i used to love this store ( and work here) but whoever hired this new woman was out of their mind. My boyfriend got kicked out bc he bought a homeless man coffee on a cold morning. He then had him come inside to fix it the way he wanted. The manager came out from the back and went balistic! Screaming and yelling at the homeless man from across the store (in front of everyone during the morning rush). My boyfriend asked what was wrong? And explained he had just bought the man coffee and he was fixing it. She then directed her crazy toward him and kicked him out too. With no explanation... i worked there for 3 years (2008-2011), and would not believe it if i hadnt witnessed it myself. I will never go in that store, or purchase any Peets products again. Helpful tip: The HIVE around the corner has great coffee and is a local business owner :)

Modern Coffee third location is located across from federal building and post office on Clay St in downtown Oakland. This location is also smaller than the other two with a few tables inside and two tables on sidewalk. Worker are outgoing no matter whats thrown them. Nothing different here just same as usual with TCHO, Awesome Bar, Chromatic Coffee etc. Good for quick bite during your commute or midday break. Open M-F from 7am-4:30pm only.

Incredible...I have always drank esspresso, being a chef for work purposes on early or late assignments, so I respect coffee but never considered myself a coffee drinker. But being a chef we speak flavor profiles ect, so easy transition if one would want to. I tried one of my first indi/micro roasters Augies in the IE of SoCal few months ago, and I instantly knew I would try a local roaster wherever I go from now on, I would indiscriminately goto star-bigbucks or dunkinNopenutes, but for now on only in absence of a local roaster or when expands started truely local. Ive since tasted many strands and roast of beans. Red bay Blew Augies away. I ordered their coffee and esspresso. Tasted each seperate. With and without sweetener and light cream. They provide you with soda water to refresh your palate. Real China is their plate and cupware. Very contemporary modern casual artsy approachable sophisticated vibe. Love it. Camt wait to see the sattelite stores. I will return and will be ordering beans, Im a fan. Great Job Redbay, service at counter was great. Staff knowledgable. And if I see the owner or whoever that was teaching that lil girl of hers whatever skills she was that day again in proper fashion Im going to throw all of my money at Redbay. Great atmosphere staff looks very happy, and roasting live in living color. Great brand and quality Starbucks cant touch this..
