Comment: For many, many years we considered this the best coffee shop in San Diego. But a few months ago the blend seemed to change from the traditional hummingbird to something not as creamy. It now lacks depth. I hope they will consider going back to the original blend as it was truly something spectacular.

Comment: The coffee here rivals anything I get in NYC, Montreal, Vancouver and other cities across the country. The service is great and the pastries too. Our favorite is the hamentaschen pastry. When my daughter had to come home from college during Covid we sat outside when we needed an escape from the suffocating atmosphere of being home all the time. She took her sketchbook and drew a picture of the setting of us sitting underneath the 805/5 freeway, with the Coaster train in the background. It was kind of a depressing scene, but suited the times. We joked that the location is so bad, it was good! No question, the coffee and pastries and service compensate for the weird location.

Comment: I have been all over the country. You can count on that everywhere I go I try the coffee. This coffee shop is definitely top 2 for me in the whole country! San Diego is a big city, and out of all things I have only 2 must stop by places. This coffee shop and Torrey pines trails.

Comment: Other than the strange location, busted up road, tiny parking lot, and train traffic, this place is awesome! They roast the beans at this location which is huge for me, and they actually know how to roast. It’s like fresh bread, just bc you have an oven doesn’t mean you can make bread. Yet they do know how to pull an espresso, so I approve. I just feel like they are just waiting for a prime lease to open up in LJ or Del Mar to let the world know they’ve arrived.

Comment: Oh, where do I begin with Zumbar Coffee & Tea? The staff and atmosphere are absolutely top-notch, earning a solid five-star rating without a doubt. The moment you step in, youre embraced with warm hospitality that feels like a friendly coffee hug. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, making it the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy your favorite brew. Now, about the latte... *sigh* Unfortunately, it didnt quite live up to the rest of the experience. I must be honest; I was left disappointed with the latte, as it tasted more like 90% milk than the rich, robust coffee goodness I was hoping for. It lacked that strong espresso kick that makes a latte truly memorable. A latte with too much milk can feel like drowning your coffee dreams, and thats what happened here. However, despite the latte hiccup, I would still encourage you to visit Zumbar Coffee & Tea for the exceptional staff and inviting atmosphere. Their dedication to service and creating a welcoming space deserves all the stars. Who knows, maybe they can work some magic on the latte front in the future. But for now, stick to their other offerings and bask in the positive vibes they effortlessly deliver. Heres to hoping for a better latte experience next time!

Comment: A friend took me to zumbar for the first time because its his favorite coffee shop. My friend suggested i try a latte since its his favorite, so i proceed to order a cold latte. After taking a sip, i noticed the drink was salty which i kinda liked because it tasted similar to the cheese foam youll get at a boba shop. I didnt think too much of it because it was my first time tasting a latte.A few hours later symptoms of food poisoning started to appear: diarrhea (5 times in a night), body aches, stomachaches, nausea, etc.In hindsight, im pretty sure the saltiness i was tasting was just spoiled milk…Thanks zumbar a great first experience.

Comment: Zumbar has to be one of the best roasters Ive ever sampled across the US. We visited 9 different cafe / roastery brands and local chains over the past 7 days. Weve been on a self guided espresso tour throughout a road trip across LA and San Diego. Zumbar has to be in our top 3 of that local list. Incredible espresso and professional staff. However, this store front isnt exactly a relaxing or interesting place to hang out. They roast coffee on site, so it was a bit chaotic. Well definitely order some roasts from here online. However, their store front isnt much of a cafe compared to Mostra, Bird Rock, James Coffee, or Dark Horse.

Comment: I had a pretty poor experience here. When I walked inside to order my tea there was a gentleman working on his laptop at the bar to the left with no other available seating inside as their tables still had not been turned over yet at 830am. After ordering my tea I proceeded to sit outside in the sun as there was none available in the shade. 30 mins had passed by and the gentleman at the inside bar had left, I went inside to sit and cool off and then was told there was no inside seating. Mind blowing, so with that being said customer service 0/0On google it says coffee and tea. This is a coffee shop please do not let that tea in the name fool you. They have 3 options and the staff couldn’t make a good tea if they tried. The tea was incredibly watered down for an iced tea. This is more just a grab and go coffee spot nothing more. I wouldn’t say it was worth my time or money. If you want a Propper coffee and tea shop I would say go somewhere else. If you’re looking for a quick cup I’m sure this place is fine. There are just a lot better options in my opinion.

Comment: I have a long history with this shop because the owner trained all of the baristas at my second job (not Zumbar). I dont think Ive ever left a review before now though even though I now come here frequently. But I thought I would today because I was super impressed that the barista was able to pour a perfect rosetta on a macchiato. I have 5 years of barista experience and I know thats not easy. You have to have perfect espresso and milk consistency and pouring technique to pull that off, and it was also delicious. Their customer service is also always excellent, theyre always calm and friendly even when really busy and I always feel welcome here. I also prefer the modest authentic minimalist vibe over some of the other flashier but lesser quality cafes in SD. This place is the real deal, such a hidden gem!

Comment: Highly recommend. They know how to pull a good shot of espresso. I have never had a bad drink from them. Espresso is temperamental and changes in humidity can affect the pour. I used to be a barista and you need to adjust the grind several times a day. You need to pay attention to how fast a shot pours and how much crema it has. These guys pay attention. Most places are not always on top of these changes. Zumbar doesnt just phone it in.They have a very simple menu, its mostly the basics but they are done exceedingly well. Their espresso is very balanced, its not over roasted. Their foam is also wonderful. Its both creamy and velvety. If you know good espresso you will not be disappointed. If you are used to chain espresso, give these guys a try. Its like a fast food burger compared to a Kobe beef one. These guys have the good stuff!

Comment: I sometimes forget how satisfying and filling a cappuccino paired with a croissant really is. COVID destroyed my morning coffee/croissant runs, but I am so glad that Zumbar does takeout so that I can still get some semblance of normalcy. My friend and I shared these two croissants (almond and regular). I also had a cappuccino, and he had a latte. Coffee content was solid as always, albeit the prices have slightly increased (understandable as local businesses have been severely affected by the quarantine orders). Even then, this is a place to continue supporting during times like these!

Comment: If you want burned espresso, please stop by. The water used to brew the espresso was so hot I nearly burned my fingers through the lid. Most of the positive reviews mention their mixed coffees with added sugars or milks which does a good job of masking bitter tasting burned coffee. If you are looking for a straight coffee or espresso, save your money and go somewhere else.Additionally, good try with the sustainable cups, but this shop should invest in products that actually keep coffee inside the cup. The lid, although completely fixed in place, continued to leak while trying drink this unenjoyable beverage. The only saving grace was the nice and polite service.

Comment: Truly one of the best coffee shops in SD. We go there everyday for our afternoon coffee.. Hummingbird is a good choice if youre looking to buy some beans. They can grind it for you too. Just need to tell em the grind size. If youre trying to avoid coffee, their herbal tea is the best in SD in my experience.

Comment: One of my favorite locally owned coffee shops. Their beans, which they roast right in store by the way, are great too. Its sad that they close on weekends since they are in a business area that doesnt get much weekend traffic. My spouse who works closeby will drive here to get coffee and it is always crowded, a good sign. The baristas are quick to serve you though.

Comment: Im a coffee drinker and have tried most places in San Diego and since I LOVE coffee, I appreciate the product of most places I go. I found Zumbar while working in Sorrento Valley through an online search and took a stroll down. Theres this cool, steel roaster in the back, one older guy and a bunch of 20 somethings behind that counter, all busy. The smell of the roasting coffee is INCREDIBLE. Looking at the menu, theres no flavored syrups or double inverted mocha choca inside out snobby foo foo drinks, theres just coffee. Phenomenal coffee. Love it so much I send bag to each of my new clients. Even to Amish country and they love it too. :)

Comment: Great little coffee place that serves hand-crafted lattes and cappuccinos. One of a kind place with youthful folks running the counter and the back operation. They sell a few types of coffee beans - easy to pick from light, medium and dark vs many varieties at other stores. My personal favorite is the Hummingbird variety. The store can grind the coffee beans for you, should one require so. A few eating accompaniments for coffee are available - muffin, croissant, etc. Just wish the location was better but nevertheless coffee here is always great and served with a smile.

Comment: This review is coming from a non-coffee-drinker, so please take this with a grain of...coffee grounds? My coworkers rave about this place. It is apparently an amazing coffee shop. For me, Im delighted that they carry the absolutely mind-blowing almond croissants from Opera Patisserie, which is nearby, but Zumbar is more convenient. Something for everyone! However. This place is so, so noisy inside. Its also not a great use of space. There are a few tables along the edge and a big open space in the middle, a couple tables outside. People who are waiting for their order are awkwardly splayed about. The machinery is really loud, so you probably arent going to be talking to someone else much, anyway. Ive taken a client here and sat outside and it was still difficult to have an informal meeting here because of the noise and the rickety chairs and tables. I feel like this coffee shop cant quite decide if it is counter service only or if it is trying to be a place people come hang out. What I would likely do, if anyone asked me (they wont) would be to put a thick piece of plexiglass behind the cashier, between him/her and the equipment, which is large and looks vaguely impressive. That way, if showing off said mysterious machinery is important, it can still happen, but contain the noise more. To me, the back area with all the things doesnt look particularly like something one really needs to show off to enhance the experience, but what do I know.In any case, stop by to pick up an almond croissant or other assorted and delightful pastries, and even coffee if you are into that kind of thing, but save your ears and get everything to go.

Comment: If you are going to a coffee place for the coffee, then this is a place that you should not miss. The espresso drinks are consistently excellent, the baristas are knowledgeable and friendly (not too cool to be a bit nice to customers), and the beans rival the best ones I have gotten from other places such as Intelligentsia, for example. If you feel like treating yourself to a pastry or doughnut, those are excellent as well. They get their pastries from Opera (which is nearby) and their doughnuts from VG Doughnuts (which is located right next to the other Zumbar location and is superb). As other reviewers have mentioned, however, it is a small place with few tables and, to my knowledge, no power outlets. It might not be an ideal place to do work, but if you are able to grab a table - particularly outdoors - and have a decent battery in your laptop, then its just fine.

I really like the croissants here as well (any flavor). They have chocolate, almond, and plain croissants. Since the coffee beans are freshly roasted, I always like to pick up a bag for the house - their beans taste much better than store-bought beans and it also supports a local company.

Comment: Zumbar Coffee, they know how to roast! Better yet, they know how to froth their almond milk! Super rich tight foam aerated to perfection. They expedite the line well to move you through, which I appreciated in the morning. They are located in a strip mall, so the ambience is not the greatest. Outdoor seating consists of a few tables, but it is loud due to the freeway proximity. When Im in town I frequent the establishment because their coffee is intense, smooth with just a hint of bright notes. They do have pastries, but nothing really for specialty diets.

Comment: Just started a new job down the street from here and Zumbar was highly recommended as the place to get a daily caffeine fix. The parking lot is cramped since its sharing space with 6 and the coffee shop itself has indoor seating for ~10 and outdoor seating for ~8. Even though this place might seem small, their selection is more than enough for coffee cravers. They have your staple coffee, mocha, espress, cappuccino and they also have cold brew and bottles of cold brew which are a plus for me.Next time Im here Im getting a bottle or two of cold brew coffee and grabbing some of their delicious croissants.

Comment: The best coffee and lattes Ive had in SD. They roast their own beans in the back of the shop, and you can taste the freshness in the coffee. Their lattes are smooth, creamy, and have a rich flavor. Their original donuts and almond croissants are really tasty. They also have some nice bottled cold brew, which I like to have on hand when I start feeling tired after lunch

Comment: Awesome coffee in a barren land! Their french press is really good, the coffee flavors are good, and not acidic. The lattes and cappuccinos are also really good. The location is awesome since there a lot of companies around the area and people come here all the time. The people working there are great too.

Comment: Great Coffee! Strong and flavorful CoffeeBeen here several times and the quality has been great all the time, If you are lucky you will find a seat during the busy hours, in the morning theres seating available most of the times. The service was great. Friendly, quick, and extremely pleasant and not cold and bitter like a lot of places like this in the area. They serve latte with pretty foam in a LARGE Cup, be prepared.Must Try: Iced mocha, iced latte. Menu is straightforward, French Press and freshly roasted beans. Almond Croissant.Strong Points:Coffee, Atmosphere, Bikers paradise, ServiceLocation, great for UCSD, Trolley Station. Qualcomm and other companies around Sorrento ValleyPastries, donuts and bagels for sale at the counterDecaf Points:Parking, almost impossible to get one, even if you get one, its going to be super tight.Place is too tiny for the crowdGet noisy at times

Comment: Its a very low key coffee shop that roasts their own beans. I ordered an iced decaf americano. Very tasty. Adequate seating space and a few pastry selection. One of the few coffee shops that serves good coffee in the area.

Comment: The lattes and cappuccinos are some of the best you will find in the area. A real coffee shop that roasts their coffee right there in the shop every week.

Comment: Great coffee - I mean GREAT coffee. Also loved the butter croissants though the almond ones look a bit decadent. The internet hear is practically unusable. Hung out for hours through dips and spikes in foot traffic and still was better to tether on my phone than to use theirs. Not the best co-work spot but great coffee.

Comment: Their cold brew is amazing! Nothing needs to be added. Fragrant with a hint of vanilla. Seriously, life changing. Their soy latte is also perfect, I literally do not add anything. Must try. I wish it was closer to where I work so walking would be an option.

Comment: Worst experience! Today, I came down there at like 4:58. During considering which one we order, it became 5 oclock. As soon as it got 5, a woman at the desk said it is closed. I begged a little because I came there and returned for nothing yesterday too and I am leaving SD tomorrow. But she was stubborn. They were working on making much coffee. Big disappointment for their attitude and manner. K

Comment: I started drinking coffee after I graduated and started having kids. I like espresso best and have a decent Saeco machine at home for making them. Ive tried a lot of the roasters here in San Diego county, and I have to say that Zumbar is still by far my favorite. I use their beans at home and at work (espresso at home and French press at work). I make my espressos mainly macchiato freddo, and have never had a bad cup from my Zumbar beans. I highly recommend their Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, which is my current favorite for my morning ristrettos.

Comment: High 3 stars or low 4 stars. Small coffeeshop and roaster. Inefficiently used space - four tables inside plus a short bar, and three tables and a bench outside. One outlet. Reasonably good atmosphere - metal tables but a fair bit of wood around. Small selection of high quality loose leaf teas. Chai lattes are only a little too sweet, but more gingery than I like. Small selection of reasonable croissants and cookies. Aggressive about collecting your cup when youre done. Crowded at 330pm on a Wednesday afternoon. Music inside is hard rock, too loud.

Comment: Great coffee but they only offer 1 size and that itty-bitty cup just doesnt cut it. But more troubling is there penchant for delivering customer orders out of sequence. If I wait in a long line, place my order and then see people behind me get their hand crafted beverage before me...thats a problem that will stop me from returning.

Comment: Fantastic coffee. This is a gem in San Diego. I was chatting with the owner the other day. They are from Seattle, where I have tried the best coffee. I am not a coffee drinker, but the coffee here makes me make an exception. This place is close to the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station (walking distance). It is so convenient...

Comment: I go there at least twice a week because the latte is fantastic and its conveniently close to work. The only way to make it better would be to open a cart in my building or offer delivery. ;-)

Comment: I stopped by Zumbar for lunch once since they are so conveniently located by my workplace. The barista puts a lot of care into making each cup of coffee. The art in every cup is a nice touch and definitely an added bonus to the already exquisite taste. The place is small, but very cozy. If youre looking for a spot to take someone on a small coffee date, Zumbar is the place!

Comment: I havent tried it all, but Ive tried quite a few of the coffee shops in San Diego, and this one is absolutely the best. The staff is quick, courteous and friendly, and more importantly, the coffee is perfect. Its not sour, its not bitter, and it doesnt taste burnt like so many of the other coffee shops that Im told will be great.I like to go with a Hummingbird Americano, hot or iced depending on the weather. They sell capped cold brew bottles and beans which is perfect for the times I cant make it in to the coffee shop.Only slightly related, but New English Brewery down the street made a Coffee Stout with Zumbar Coffee and it is without a doubt the best beer they offer, if you like coffee or stouts, I highly recommend you give it a try.

Comment: Hummingbird espresso is roasted very dark by modern standards. Theres really no middle flavor profile to the shot - just the sweet and the bitter. Pulls quite thin. Maybe its good with milk, but thats not my bag. Super dark roast seems to be a San Diego thing....
