Comment: My favorite spot to get coffee, hot chocolate, and bakery goods when I visit San Jose! The atmosphere here is great! Sometimes it is a hit or miss with the staff. Sometimes they are super welcoming and greet everyone, & sometimes I walk in and order and there is no greetings or no smiles. I understand ppl have bad days though, I still come back! My boys love the hot chocolate here!

Comment: Asked for an extra hot latte, but got a lukewarm one. When I returned it, they didnt replace it and they just heated it up again with the steam wand. I had already taken a sip (how else would I know it wasnt hot), so this is not hygenic at all and probably a health code violation. Also, terrible coffee overall and high prices.

Comment: Good menu with a variety of drinks. Large patio seating, great for people watching. Prices are a little high. However the service here is terribly frustrating…there’s always like 5 people behind the counter who are wayyy more into talking to each other than making drinks. I wouldn’t come here expecting fast or friendly service.

Comment: Roys Station in Japantown has brewed not just exceptional coffee but heartwarming memories for me since my college days, through grinding start-up times, to now owning my nearby brick-and-mortar business. This coffee haven is interwoven with my journey, serving nostalgia in every cup that takes me back to how far Ive traveled. Besides their impeccable coffee, the unwavering positivity of the staff, even amidst my gloomiest days, has been a beacon of light. Roy’s, with its robust beans and uplifting vibes, has cemented a solid place in my heart. A heartfelt thank you to the team that’s always served positivity, one cup at a time.

For my drink, I thought I’d try the carmelito, which…I thought was okay…maybe it wasn’t my kind of drink and so I didn’t enjoy it as much.I would want to come back in the future and try something I would normally get so I have benchmarks to compare it to.

Comment: Roy’s Station Coffee & Tea is a quaint and charming local coffee shop in Japan Town.Staff are friendly and decor is artsy and quirky, features gas station, train, and urban memorabilia. They have an outdoor patio which is perfect for coffee, tea, and/or a snack outside, especially when the weather is nice.I especially enjoy the vegan, nut free, and gluten free brownies they carry paired with an iced coffee.Tea and coffee variety is excellent and they also have smoothies and juices (in the cold box, no juice bar). They have Verve coffee beans for purchase and store branded sweatshirts and mugs, and framed photography for sale by local artists.Worth stopping by and checking out.

Comment: So I did like this place. The barista forgot our order even though we were sat directly in front of him for 15 minutes. Theres a weird paradox in that no pets are allowed inside ( a good decision in my book) but dog treats are available inside. Its funny that theres notwto offer children to treat them but if you bring a dog theres something nice for your pooch. I had a spiced latte which was actually nicer and spicier than I imagined.

Comment: THOSE WITH SEVERE FOOD ALLERGIES: BE CAREFUL HEREI have witnessed two instances of staff not paying attention to a very real food allergy.I live nearby and really like this place most of the time. Sadly, twice now I’ve ordered items and asked for oat milk in place of regular milk. Both times I received regular milk. The first time I immediately caught the issue. They changed it for me (made a new one with oat milk instead of regular milk). I always say “with oat milk” automatically, and I explicitly recall looking for it on the menu before ordering. The second time, unfortunately, I did not catch the problem. My partner found that the item had milk—the way in which this was discovered involved a day of pain and suffering due to the allergy itself. Milk allergies are real, horrible, and exposure to lactose-containing products can induce serious, sometimes life-threatening problems.Thinking of both times this happened, I should have been more careful, especially considering the vibe of the employees. Both times, place had three people working in the middle of the day. The second time, there was only one other customer there, and the staff was not paying close attention to me when I ordered. Instead they were more interested in their own conversations with each other. While I have no complaints about that in and of itself, when it’s at the expense of customer HEALTH, it’s a problem for human life.Roy’s Station Coffee & Tea staff, please pay more attention to what is being ordered and listen for modifications — add them to the ticket so other staff do not make a mistake. Do whatever it takes to make it so we don’t suffer the horrific effects of significant food/milk allergies. Please, please, please.

Comment: The coffee (CORTADO) was smooth and delightful. I sat on the patio, quite an improvement over the gas station that was. I would top off the stars but really, it just took too long to make it. Project manager please! However, a good cortado is amazingly satisfying and this fit the bill (all 5 of them + tip). You will pay an extra dollar for 20 cents worth of Oat milk. Hey, inflation is bitting everyone and everything, including staffing apparently.

Comment: Weak lukewarm coffee. Tasted good, but be careful not to add to your usual amount of cream and sugar. Its just not strong enough, disappointing, reviews are not accurate.Update, 15 minutes later....Had to get a refill, because it was weak of course. $3.25 for a refill!Should be no more than a dollar. Outrageous. Downgraded service and overall. Cashier said no refill when I asked. I said really? She says I dont know and looks at me expectantly.... Im visibly annoyed and she says, I can ask? Yes, please I say. Management told her to give me 50 cents off. One coffee plus refill is 7 bucks. Not cool! Lousy service, overpriced, weak coffee. Also, outdoor seating only. Not a bad arrangement and area, but be warned. And, no restrooms!

Comment: They serve Verve coffee here, which is hands down my favorite roaster in the (extended) Bay Area, so I try to stop by here when Im in the area. The one downside to Roys is that everything other than their straight black coffee is overly sweetened. Its on a level higher than Starbucks sweetness. Other than that, its a cool place to drink some coffee with a few friends.

Comment: Whats not to love 🙂💜 Customer service is the first rule for a great experience, and every single person at Roys is what makes the experience there fun and relaxing. My dog worships the owner and the treats they have for the dogs, and I am addicted to their house coffee as well as the almond milk latte with hazelnut syrup. Its what I call heaven in a cup on a cold morning 😋 🤤 This place and its location made transitioning from Davis to San Jose much easier because it has the same vibe as Davis and its famous Mishka Cafe. Also the location is a walking distance, so it does remind me of the early morning walks and the chirping of bird in my hometown in Iraq. I am so happy this beautiful place exists 💜 Thank you! Terribly dry and not good overall.I appreciate the attempt but it falls flat.It is not worth the $6.Feel free to charge $10 for a real breakfast burrito, if you want it on the menu, but it better come with something more than eggs.Real salsa (NOT packaged Tapatio), onions, potatoes, cheese, avocado, sour cream, diced cherry tomatoes, etc etc etc….Take your pick. Comment: I’ve been coming to Roy’s for years. Unfortunately this is the third trip in a row with under filled cups and the now the last.I’ve noticed the amount of coffee you get in the small cups is about 80% of the cup size. We ordered our usual two drinks for almost $11.00....? With the coffee not even close to the rim of the cup it seems the the value for what you get is not good at all anymore. I can’t waste my money for under filled cups of coffee at premium prices. Sorry we are moving on.

Comment: Great corner coffee shop open earlier than most surrounding businesses in J-town & offers a great spot to sit & enjoy surroundings. One of cleaner coffee shops I’ve seen in San Jose, nice design, friendly staff & great tribute to the gas station owner Roy who had a station here on this corner from 1946 to 1990.For sustainability-minded folk, get your coffee in a for-here cup & choose food without plastic wrapping from the case. I love the retro coke machine which still serves cold bottles of Soda in reusable bottles (wish they were all like this!)

Comment: Ive had too many mixed experiences. Their lattes and mochas are delicious but their americanos and coffee taste like nothing. Overpriced for the inconsistency. Comment: *Latte & Almond Croissant*I had picked to come to this shop in particular based on what I had seen via reviews/recommendations on different platforms, which had been greatly positive.Upon arrival, the shop itself has a nice set-up with a mixture of indoor and outdoor seating. The staff were friendly and there are several options to choose from regarding snacks and drinks. For what I ordered, I found the latte to be quite milk heavy compared to other lattes and could not taste any trace of espresso. On the other hand, I found the almond croissant to be delicious.Ultimately, I had high hopes for this place based on what others have said; I even went out of my way for it. For me, it was a sub-average/average coffeeshop, which makes it more disappointing as the hype did not match reality for my experience.

Comment: Unfortunately I didn’t like any of their coffees. This was my third time visiting, trying out 4 different coffees on the menu. None of them were particularly good... The regular coffee tasted like they were sitting out there for hours. The regular hot latte was overly foamy and terrible after taste from the espresso. Sadly, even the mocha had this very cheap quality-like chocolate taste. Almost reminded me of the Hershey’s syrup + milk heated with no espresso. And I couldn’t finish the iced coffee...I love this location. The outdoor has a nice open seating, usually filled with several people. Workers are friendly and helpful. Not the ideal place to do heavy load of laptop work, but great for casual visits.Would definitely come back to try their other drinks on the menu... I want to like this place, but I seem to be getting the wrong drinks in wrong day/time or something.

Interesting books on local history available for perusal inside, along with toys to distract toddlers. Coffee from Verve. Comment: The coffee is fine here. The espresso is neither high quality nor bottom-of-the-barrel. I think the location is good, right in the heart of JT, but the inside portion of the cafe is very cramped. I sat at a table that was practically on top of the creamer / sugar / stir station. People routinely had to do that little shuffle side-sgep move behind me to get some milk. The outdoor seating area is more spacious. I would say Roys is just a bit above average with potential to be better.

Comment: Cute and convenient. Serving Verve coffee..which I happen to be a fan of... I love a Starbucks...but its nice to find a place that doesnt overoast or burn their beans..or try to make wierd flavors out of my coffee..reasonably priced.Hot chocolate was creamy and delicious..Tried a white mocha and a chai... Neither one felt like they were missing something... Well done.Only 1 bathroomPlenty of seating indoors and out.

Comment: Over priced house coffee. I think Ill just hit the 7/11 next time and get a bigger coffee plus a donut... even Starbucks has better drip coffee prices than them.People are cool, just not cool enough to justify price.

Comment: The only coffee shop in the middle of Japantown. Therefore, its lively and always has a lot of people studying or having a meeting. I almost always stop by after eating at the restaurants here. Please have a sip of that foam as soon as you get your drink. The first few sips before the drink goes cold is the BEST. The smell, texture, taste.. do they call it aroma?Dirty Chai is my favorite. Its apparently a chai latte with a shot of espresso.Recently Ive been trying Latte + pump of syrup (many different flavors available) and I LOVE IT.The staff is a hit or miss, but generally friendly and drinks ALWAYS come out fast.Definitely a great place to meet and chat.Tip : Ask for their rewards card. You get a free drink for every 10.Fun Fact : Did you know Roys station used to be a gasoline station? Take a look at the pictures posted around the store while you wait. Its very interesting.

Comment: My husband and I have been coming to Roys almost everyvweekend for seven years. We absolutely love it. The coffee is amazing and they have a great selection of pastries amd snacks. All the employees are friendly and welcoming. If you can sit inside or outside. Both areas are nice. You definitely get the feel of the community of Japan Town here. Highly recommend!

Comment: Free coffee while you wait. Not the best management of wait list. I sat at the bar eventually. Few types of eggs Benedict, omelettes, scrambles, etc... I got the blueberry pancakes, which had the blueberries baked in instead of on top. Nothing special. I prefer another local chain really. This place has drinks like mimosas.

Comment: So drinks wise is why I give it a 3 slash 4 out of 5. I feel like theyre a hit or miss, so that can be a bummer at times. The food and pastries they serve here, however, is 5/5. I do love the atmosphere here, theres a lot of space inside and outside and they always have good music playing. The employees are very friendly and personal. If youre from Japantown in San Jose, this is definitely a local spot thats frequented often. You should definitely try the BBQ Pork Bun if youre ever here.

Comment: So I found my way to San Jose, Japan Town! While waiting for my hotel room I ventured out in search of coffee a snack and som local Intel. I found Roys Station coffee and tea. The employees are knowledgeable about their product and very friendly. They know the area and are more than willing to point a visitor to local food choices.I was in the mood for pizza and I will review that choice later tonight.By the way the coffee is good too. I was offered a sample of the suggested dark roast. Good call. They care about their clientele to the point the barista came running out side to warn everyone that the parking enforcement officer was around, to check your meter if you parked near by.I walked but this points out that they are observant not only about their shop but what goes on around it.Great place I will be back!

Comment: By far the best coffee shop in town. Roys employees are friendly and welcoming and make you feel like part of the family! They have a large selection of coffee drinks and teas as well as pastries, sandwiches, and other snack items. Their large patio is excellent for sitting and chatting and watching the daily happenings in Japantown! I will drive out of my way just to stop and get a coffee and pork bun!

Comment: I tried Roys for the first time on a recent morning and it was a very pleasant experience. The location itself is great. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. Indoors is exceptionally clean and interestingly furnished. I love the functioning old Coke machine and the well-restored gas pump. A satellite jazz station playing in the background was a nice touch. The outdoor seating area is large, clean, and provides a nice vantage of J-town foot traffic. As far as food and beverage selections go, the house coffee was decent and they have a selection of food items in a refrigerated case, some of which can be heated up in a microwave by the staff. Espresso items are the usual types one expects. The employees that were working at the time were all very friendly and professional.I will make Roys one of my usual morning spots. Come for the coffee and stay for the lovely and lively atmosphere. Its really nice to patronize a local joint that offers an experience that is far more enjoyable than the bland and soulless one found at the average chain coffee house.

Comment: After working in specialty coffee for a number of years and having been a long-tine customer here, I never hesitate to reccomend Roys as the best cafe in the area. It has a perfect blend of quality coffee, warm employees, and a large amount of comfortable indoor and outdoor seating. Plus, the prices are affordable and the vibe is free of the pretension that typically makes shops which serve good coffee so unpleasant to visit.tl; dr Roys is great. Go to Roys. Tell your friends

Comment: This spot was a gas station for many, many years. When it needed to be updated, the children decided to make it a coffee & tea spot. Roy was sure it would not be popular, but he was wrong. Like large chains, it is very popular and serves great coffee, teas & pastries. Roy now accepts his error and his children run the high octane coffee to satisfy everyone.

Comment: I came here over the weekend to hang out and have a cup of coffee with my husband, and we really enjoyed our visit. The coffee was good, and we were excited to see they have spam musubi for sale as a snack. The decor inside is really neat (small watercolours by a local artist, and some vintage coke and gas machines), and the patio is really big and sunny. We had to wait in line for a while to order, but I guess thats to be expected at a coffee shop on a Saturday morning.

Comment: This place is always busy! It has interior and exterior seating where you can watch people walking by in Japantown. The coffee is good, and they have pastries. I understand that this used to be a gas station, but the underground tanks leaked and had to be cleaned up. Roys sons then made it into a cafe and named it after their dad. You will like this place and the coffee, go and enjoy it.

Comment: Roys Coffee and Teas in San Joses Japan Town has a lot going for it in charm, setting, and ample patio seating, but coffee stands front and center. Roys is a coffee lovers coffee house. Roasted beans from Verve in Santa Cruze is the foundation of the coffee drinks crafted by expert baristas. Roys is always fully staffed and the service is courteous and prompt. While dogs are not allowed inside the caffe, water bowls are maintained at either end of the patio for canine refreshment.

Comment: This is a really cool coffee spot in San Jose. The staff is funny and helpful and the coffee is a decent-to-good quality. The only knock against this place is that the inside sitting area is relatively small (for those rare rainy days); typical Bay Area days are perfect for the large outside seating area.

Comment: I came by one morning for a quick meet-up and was amazed. This place is so cool, I really liked the vibe! Their menu had good choices and it wasnt so big and overwhelming. They have really fluffy and eye-appealing pastries, which Ill probably try in the future. I wish there was more indoor seating, but outside they have plenty of umbrellas and shaded areas so it wasnt too bad.It was hot as eff when I visited so I went with the Iced White Mocha. It was creamy, tasty, and I was sad when I finished it. Since I live so close I would definitely consider coming here for coffee more often.

Comment: Decent coffee shop in San Jose Japantown, with a good amount of variety -- they have a couple different interesting flavored drinks to try, and more than a few tea lattes. Its always rather crowded, but I think its due to the fact that there are few coffee shops in Japantown. The coffee itself is so-so, definitely nothing like the current trend of single-origin coffees. I wouldnt come all the way here just for the drinks, but if youre in town, it is a nice place to hang out.

Comment: Love the workers here but some of them can be a little clumsy. I requested they cut my burrito in three pieces but they cut it into four. When they heated my burrito, the inside was still cold. And when I requested if they could reheat my burrito, it turned out too hot. Overall, I like this place. Friendly and energetic environment. Clean, intimate cafe. Workers are very friendly and eager to help customers.
