Comment: Edit: Jan/24Philz is back, service and drinks have been astounding the past two months.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Replace, not remove. This was my beloved coffee shop, I came here 3 times a week (years ago) when I went to SJSU, but something happened and the magic isnt there anymore. My experience before:The moment I walk in I’d smell the soothing sensation of coffee beans shuffling around the store. The baristas would joyfully welcome me in and gladly offer suggestions on what to try that day. Staff would hum along to my favorite hip-hop and R&B artist being played in the speakers while my favorite drink was being made. Lastly my favorite quote, “Try this and let me know if it needs any adjustments.” as the barista confidently waited for my obvious approval.I didn’t come to this store to get coffee, I came to this store to find moments of peace, joy, safety, laughter, and community from my chaotic school life. Now:The atmosphere is stressful and uncomfortableStaff do not feel passionate or happy working thereBaristas won’t look in your direction when they call your nameDrinks taste more like flavor water than coffeeMint Mojitos uses half the amount of mint as it did beforeAvocado toast (delicious) is no longer on the menuThe prices rose in exchange for less flavor and less serviceMaybe social distancing removed their charmMaybe Covid supply chain issues removed their qualityMaybe the removal of Fire/Police Department patchesalso removed the feeling of peace, community, and unityI hope management will find creative solutions to recreate the charming culture Philz once had.Don’t remove, replace.

Comment: Changed a lot in the few years since I was here last. I used to come a few times a week. Definitely not as personal as they used to be. They took down all the great patches they were given. All of the loyal city employee customers that gave them patches, gone. The employees were pretty rude, and the overall vibe was uncomfortable. Place was pretty empty too. At least the coffee is halfway decent.

Comment: I understand that people go here for their mint mojitos, but Im not a big fan of coffee thats not straight black. Philz black coffee selections, which are probably close to 20 blends, are not good at all. Ive probably been here close to 10 times, due to other people that I know liking the mojitos, and each time I try a new blend. Theyre all bad and extremely over roasted. I dont understand it. I also hate being pressured to add milk and sugar into my coffee every order, as if its weird to drink your coffee black. Dont go here for the coffee, go for the mojitos.

Comment: This was my second time at a Philz and the service was exponentially better than the first time. My first experience was in Oakland and when I walked in asking if they made Lattes, the barista looked me up and down and then turned away as he said “Nope”.This experience was the exact opposite. I ordered the mint mojito which I didn’t know was only made cold. When I picked it up I said “I think this was supposed to be hot” the barista explained that they only made that drink cold but was happy to let me keep that one AND make me another hot coffee. He was so sweet and so kind, he actually came out of the shop where I was waiting outside and delivered it to me himself. I wish I caught his name, he is an absolute angel and made my New Year Day!Thank you!

Comment: Apparently very popular as the run out of expressos before 10 am! I tried the Turkish delight with a hint of cardamom and it was delicious! Would definitely love more clarity in the menu and more information about pastries and other product, there was a long but fast line outside to get coffee but no menu available for people to see until they get to the cashier making the decision there. The place is nice and simple but the coffee is so good that I wish it could be enjoyed in a better way.

This place used to be fast before Covid, now its extremely slow, even though there are 4 or 5 workers and only 2 pending orders. Comment: I love Philz, but this is the worst location. Ive never had a bad drink at the other locations, but its hit or miss here. Sometimes watery, sometimes very sweet (even though I get light sweet). They dont use the Philz app, which means it costs more than $1 more to order pickup ahead on the Caviar app!!! Plus its always really slow, even when its not that busy. They need better management.

Comment: It has one of the best coffees in Bay Area. You should definitely try Mint Mojito and ask the barista to make it sweet and creamy. The only reason I would not give it a 4 stars is that some barista might not make my mint mojito a little bitter. Other than that it’s a great place.

Comment: This coffee shop is one of those establishments where you have to say “I’m fine with waiting in line”. Sure, you can mobile order, but you don’t do that at a bar. So, when you walk in and see a line, you have to want to wait for coffee. Not just any cup of coffee, but one where you have an actual human to human interaction, albeit brief; where you step up to the barista, share with them your drink preferences (likes/dislikes), and wait. Order some pastries while you wait or even an avocado toast (gotta try it once). Once your drink is ready, the barista summons you and then your preconception of what coffee is and what it tastes like fades away and you can sip enjoyment and start your day.

Comment: Right across street from the SJSU campus. Opens early 7 days a week to caffeinated the area. This location is definitely a SJSU student hangout / study hall no matter what time of day with the university is in session.Like all Philz, location is always busy. There will be a wait, but the line does move quickly. And with all Bay Area Philz locations I have been to, the friendly baristas know their stuff and are very familiar with both Philz’s coffee and food menus. They can quickly figure out what your like to drink if you need drink recommendations while quickly getting down to business and making your customized coffee drink while you wait.I always do like their prompt, reassuring Philz statement as the Barista hands you the cup - “taste it before you leave to be sure your happy” — so you are never disappointed with what you ordered. I have never asked to make me another coffee. There is seating both indoors and outdoors. Front doors are wide open so very easy for a disabled person to get in and out without any assistance. To reduce your wait time, it is faster to order ahead using the Philz app.As for parking, this location is more of a neighborhood drop in, walk-by kind of place than to find parking and then walk in and get coffee.

You need to stand in line go to barista when your turn comes, order your drink then go to cashier and pay for your drink! Any way I am a starbucks guy, I paid first then was trying to figure out where my order was. One of the Baristas understood what I did, she prepared my drink Aromatic Arabic. Coffee was pretty good. Place does get busy with long lines to order, since it is located in prime location in downtown San Jose.

Comment: Drink ☕️I ordered a mocha tesora and it was strong and sweet with adjustable milk and sugar levels.Service🕴🏻Being a first time customer I wasn’t sure where exactly to order and eventually the barista informed me albeit in a slightly dubious way. So it seems one should wait at the start of a line until a barista calls out to you and you can then go to the spot at the counter. After you order, then you head to the cashier to pay and wait for your order to be called.Ambience 🕯With walls decked in posters of past concerts, events etc, it’s evident this is a students hangout with some rough edges. There’s not much spaces to sit around thus mostly are takeaways.

Comment: Its good considering the country its at, but I didnt really like the coffee. The hot chocolate was pretty good, though. They also have a weird system, everyone lines up and then goes to a barista, there are 4 I think in this branch. Basically you order from a barista, then tell the order again to the cashier, and then wait somewhere not so comfortable for your barista to say your drink is ready. It requires you to pay close attention to your barista. They have seats both inside and outside.

Comment: Came out of curiosity and because I happen to be visiting nearby, and Im glad I did. Had a pleasant experience and satisfied my craving for awesome coffee. An active and bustling place with a cozy and relaxed vibe and decor. There is even a vibrant mural art on their wall which stands out.Lots of customers but service is organized and quick. Very impressive since all the coffee made is a pour over.Coffee selection is diverse with lots of interesting flavours. Ordered a Tesora and Canopy of Heaven coffee with medium level of sweetness. Coffee was very smooth, strong, but not too acidic, and no nasty sour or bitter aftertaste. Also got a couple of whole coffee bean bags (Tesora and Silken Splendour). $18 per pound. Shop can grind the beans for you. A great deal if you want to enjoy it at back at home.Keep in mind that there is no restroom in this place. It is also a chill place to sit down, relax, and people-watch.Easily accessible via walking or by car. It is close to nearby public parking. Also wheelchair accessible.Would come back again, and try out their mocha and mint mojito iced coffee.

It was awesome.I had the silken splendor. So interesting and delicious. I also tried the vegan donut warmed. Holy cow it was good! All coffees are pour overs and they have all sorts of interesting flavors. The staff is fast and as friendly as coffee shop people can be.

It’s mostly students during the weekdays.Seating is very limited. I usually bring my coffee back to school or MLK library to work.Would recommend the Mint mojito iced coffee.

Comment: This was my first experience at a Philz. To be honest, it was really confusing. There was only 3 people in line, but it took about 5 minutes before someone acknowledged me. Then, when I ordered a Chai the options were completely confusing. Then, I had no idea where to pick it up. (Found out later that you pick it up from the person whom you ordered it from.) The store itself was very nice. The drink...well, to be real, I had no idea what I actually ended up drinking!

But just addressing the all to familiar pattern of baristas non verbally communicating amongst themselves and other customers to hassle certain asian men when they enter the premises. Really annoying. Once these kids find out you are not an immigrant, they accept you into their world; until they quit or are fired in two months time.

Comment: There is definitely great coffee here I now choose this over Starbucks most times. Up until recently service has been outstanding. I work down the street the my coworkers choose this place for me to make the coffee run. They will order online for me and I will pick up to avoid the incredibly long line of SJSU students. When we started doing this there was always a really long line but my order would always be ready and the batista was always very friendly when I came to pick up. The past few time I now see the place close to empty yet this time I was told it would take 30min and thats after it took me 15min to arrive after placing the order. I guess I just dont understand why the busier it is the faster I get my drink when realistically i should get drinks faster when its slower. Also with recent past orders not being ready upon arrival the to go batista is no longer friendly and tells me to take a seat (in a tone basically telling me to go away) as if I am inconveniencing them by waiting near the bar. There is only metered parking here so speed is key in preventing parking tickets for customers.

Comment: Part 1: Philz in General [5/5 stars]When I first moved up to the bay area and looked up coffee shops, this one obviously popped up. But after reading that they specialized in custom-blended coffees, I assumed that they were low-quality, flavored coffee; which is so so far from the truth. Its essentially a pour-over, specialty coffee shop - so no espresso - where each cup is made on the spot and customized to the persons tastes. They are my absolute go-to coffee spot and thats coming from someone who has dabbled in a lot of processes (i.e., auto-drip, french press, stovetop espresso, pour over, percolator, aeropress and espresso machine).Part 2: This Particular Philz [4/5 Stars]Positives are great coffee and friendly service. Negatives are that its small and doesnt have too much space to spread out inside and - being close to the university campus - parking can be a pain and it can be pretty busy.

Comment: This is the san jose state university edition of the regional Philz Coffee chain. While it has the standard quality Philz coffee that is supremely awesome, perky and totally worth whatever expense and effort it takes to get a cup this location is not without flaws. This is a walk up location-there is no parking something that is not necessary known to first time visitors. the service is hit and miss-sometimes itll be every bit as good as youd want and other times the barista clearly hates you, coffee and life in general in that order. Not the best lounging spot either-the space is long narrow and does not have a lot of seating. So come for the coffee if for no other reason.

I went to the woman the register first to ask if a phone had been dropped off. Before I can even describe the phone to her she tells me nothing has been dropped off today. Doesnt bother to check under the counter or anything.Okay, well I have an android phone so I locate my phone remotely and sure enough its still at Philz. I turn on ringing for the device and sure enough....its in the counter behind the register. She says nothing to me as a I take it from her, no apology, nothing.Ugh.

I recommend the Silken Splendor if you enjoy a medium roast, or the Julies Ultimate if you like a dark roast. If you really enjoy the taste of the coffee remember to tell them to go light on the creamer so the taste of the roast will stand out more.

I dont even drink coffee but I wanted to see what all the hype was a bout. It has a super cool lounge area inside with comfy couches that are well worn in and different chairs you can use to study or work. When you get up to the counter they make your drink for you and allow you to try it. The reason this place is amazing is because you are one on one with your barista and they sit there and make your drink for you making adjustments until they get it right even if you dont know what you want like me! Talk about customer service! I also go the Mediterranean Avocado toast which has hard boiled eggs on it which was something new to me. Comment: I am not a coffee drinker. This review is for the chai, which is quite literally the worst chai Ive ever had. I dont know what they put in it, but it was completely undrinkable. I have had both the Starbucks Americanized chai and the traditional masala chai while on trips to India, and the Philz chai doesnt taste even remotely similar to either of those two types. Yes, this is a coffee place, and I have heard that its very good and very strong coffee, but if they cant make a decent cup of chai, they should remove it from the menu. However, this place does sell really fantastic pain au chocolats. Hence the two stars instead of one.

Comment: In A Nutshell:-Philz is hands down my absolute favorite place to get a cup of java.-Theres always a long line so you should take advantage of this location, they use OrderAhead which is an app you can download for free and pre-order drinks.Overall, the staff here are always nice and lively. Parking can be a challenge at times.

Comment: Everything about this coffee shop is great. Their staff are very polite and patient, always smiling and willing to help customers with their coffee selection. Their customer service is A+. The only negative thing (not their fault) is lack of parking and they do not validate if you park in the garage next door.

Comment: First place I tried Philz coffee and fell in love with their Yerbamate and Istanbul Treat (sweet and creamy, with honey, of course). Recently renovated, open space, new couches, great music playing the background, and amazing art by local artists you can admire and purchase. The employees are fellow students, super friendly, very chill. Definitely has the hipster vibe. Theres seating outside also. There are definitely long lines, but the employees work fast and if you have the order ahead app, that helps a lot. I absolutely adore this Philz.

Comment: After a long stressful week, and pretty late on a Sunday evening, I got an urge to eat something sweet. There were infinite options (obviously), but I needed to eat a cake or something like that, and cheesecake wasnt going to cut it. So after a few minutes searching on Yelp, I found this cool little place

Comment: Im not a coffee person by any means, so its usually hard for me to enjoy it as a casual drink. However, Philz is definitely the exception.I once tagged along with a friend who was getting the ecstatic, which is a lovely idea of a blend for them, consisting of all of their coffees in one. Once I saw the mint mojito I had to try it. And I was blown away by not only the flavor but the wonderful cream on top. With plenty of mint leaves inside, this was a real mint drink. I have since tried the mint mojito at the Los Gatos location and was really disappointed by no thick frothy cream, bitter coffee and just an overall pretty bad concoction. So Id definitely recommend this place, sure its pretty busy during the semester, but as an SJSU student its super convenient between classes and fantastic!

Comment: The coffee is why one comes here. Period.Philz has a large variety of light, medium, and dark roasts that are ground and brewed to order as sweet and creamy as you like. Their trick of the trade is using a huge amount of ground coffee to brew a single cup in order to produce a very strongly flavored product. Each cup is made individually by pouring near-boiling water over your ground coffee of choice and through what looks like cheesecloth.Protip: Bring your own coffee mug and they will fill it, no matter how big it is, and only charge you for the price of a regular small coffee. This will save you 50 cents off the price of a large, plus youll get more coffee than will fit in one of their large cups.As far as the atmosphere is concerned, its always cold inside, the outside seating is uncomfortable, and its not particularly clean or welcoming in either. The furnishings are of the typical funky college coffee house variety.Philz offers some prepared foods, some of which they will warm up for you. They always look a little sad; like theyve sat in a case for several days. I havent ever tried any food there myself and have only rarely seen anyone else actually eat anything theyve purchased on site.If you enjoy people-watching, this particular Philz is a great place to do so, especially when SJSU is in session. Bear in mind, the downtown location attracts a good cross-section of folks: from college students to cops on patrol to bleary-eyed residents of the adjacent high-end condos who shuffle in wearing their bathrobes and fuzzy slippers.

Comment: Philz Coffee speaks for itself. There is rarely a down time for this place, because they make really great drinks. The staff is always super nice and if you dont LOVE your drink theyll make it again if they have to.Downside-- we usually use orderahead to order and the counter for pickup is all the way in the back. Now that college is back in session, the place is usually over flowing with college kids with their headphones in, so no matter how loudly you say excuse me! you kind of just have to push your way through.

Comment: Unfortunately, this is the only location in the San Jose area. Therefore, if its Mon-Sat, you have to find and pay for parking on the street. However, if youre a student at SJSU then it probably wont be a concern to you. This location recently got renovated so the decor is a little more cleaner with an urban and modern twist. The variety of the coffee is what I love. I mostly come for the mint mojito iced coffee. Im not sure of any other place who does something like that. I also tried the ginger snap coffee when they were out of mint leaves once and that was a great alternative. Depending on what staff member you get, they can be either nice or rude. However, they are mostly nice. There are just a few that tend to have one of those bad days.

Comment: This place is one in a kind and probably serves some of the best coffee in the Bay.Heres how it works:Pass the cashier and queue in line until one of the baristas calls you up. Choose between light, medium or dark roast. Each roast has different subroasts and its certainly worth trying out a different one every time. I like the medium roast ones. They are always patient enough to recommend you a roast and explain it.And then the magic starts to happen: they brew your personal coffee freshly with hot water. In fact, the celebrate coffee brewing as an art which makes it fun to watch. That also leads to the fact that the place is always filled with some nice and fresh coffee scent that really gets you into the mood for coffee while the brewing is happening. You can also add creamer or sugar to your coffee. I usually go for light creamer which adds a nice, smooth feeling to your coffee. While youre waiting for your drink to get ready you can pay.Dont forget to tip youre barista directly in cash if you like their blend.Really an excellent coffee place. Once you have been here once you wont ever go to any chain store again.

Even if their service does tend to take awhile, you cant complain because their coffee is just that worth it.The Mint Mojito is by far the best drink to get. Comment: Perhaps I am not hipster enough because Philz didnt live up to the hype for me.Their concept of one cup at a time may make you think that your coffee will be special but its just too much of a wait time for me. I cant imagine anyone trying to get a quick cup of coffee in the morning before work/school. I am not used to waiting 10-15 minutes for a cup of coffee. I think thats pretty ridiculous even if they are crafting your coffee. Ive tried several flavors from Philz but nothing really stood out to me. I usually get them iced but I feel as if they add too much ice and its always watered down when I receive it. I get light sugar+creme but still the coffee taste isnt there. I also dont like how they add the sugar and creme for us, I rather just do it myself.I think Ill stick to my vietnamese coffee or Starbucks...

Comment: Philz is the best coffee in the Bay, possibly in the US - at least in my experience. Small area inside this location, but ample seating outside and since its the South Bay the weather is almost always perfection to sitting outdoors.

Comment: This is the best coffee ever! Having travelled from the other side of the world (Australia), I was introduced to Philz coffee by a friend who has moved over here to live - and is addicted to it! There really is nothing like it anywhere else in the world, and I will truly miss my daily cup of Philz when I return home. ...Also the staff at the San Jose store are so amazingly friendly ... and also INCREDIBLY honest. Having dropped my purse outside the store late one evening (full of my credit cards, ID and quite a bit of money), the staff picked it up and held it until I came back. So I can not only HIGHLY recommend the coffee, but the integrity of the staff as well. Thank you for your honesty, happy smiles and fabulous coffee.

Comment: Welcome to the South Bay Philz. I first went to Philz in SF and have been a fan ever since. The difference between Philz and other coffee places, they put more focus on the flavor of beans and the preparation of flavors afterwards. They will usually ask, how does it taste? This is a good location near SJSU with a nice couch to hang out at. I usually get the fedora but the iced mojito is very popular and tasty too.

Comment: I LOVE PHILZ! This branch and the Cupertino branch that opened recently are the closest to me. I prefer going to the Cupertino one usually since I dont have to pay for parking... :P but before, I would always come to the San Jose one. I first got introduced to Philz when I was studying at Cal so I was really happy to know that they had opened one in San Jose! The workers at this particular Philz dont seem to be as friendly and are sometimes a bit more stuck up than others but hey -I still get good coffee so I cant complain. Im a huge fan of the iced mint mojito coffee, then again..who isnt. I also like their dark roast - most particularly their Jacobs and their Julies. I always get my coffee black since its much healthier so dont really ask for cream or sugar, though the barista does ask you so thats nice if you like to customize your drink a bit! I also really like the atmosphere here. A lot of people come to just chill, catch up, or study. The music is a bit too loud for studying but just bring some noise cancelling headphones and youll have the perfect study environment. Youll find a lot of students here since its SJSU. Highly recommended. I.love.Philz. :))

Comment: Philz coffee is an experience and a little chaotic, though dont be afraid to ask for help if you get confused about the lines! Their coffee is specifically pour-over technique and quite delectable compared to most brewing styles. I would say their coffee selection is more on the dessert side, but regardless of the highest quality. Any coffee selections with mint is worth trying even if just once, but the normal pour-over coffees are amazing as well!
