Comment: So there I was, running away on foot from my archnemesis.I needed a discreet location where I could quick change into my disguise without being caught, and hide without being recognized.And then I thought, “Where can I find the largest gathering of uninteresting, and the most forgettable people?”And there it was… the Peet’s coffee on 4th street. Surely anyone here writing long form metaphorical plays about climate change on a MacBook Air wouldn’t catch any suspicion. Let alone warrant attention from the Russian spies chasing me down.It was in the all-gender restroom where I was able to quickly change into my cardigan, Uniqlo khakis, and doc martens— even hid my comms device in an android otterbox case. I was one of them… a Peet’s customer.I sat and waited till I overheard one of my pursuers yell out, “он не может быть здесь. жизнь высосется из него в считанные секунды!” as they ran to the Starbucks across the street.Thanks, Peet’s! You’ve done it again. Great matcha here!

Comment: I would like to preface that we thoroughly enjoy peetes. unfortunately, this last morning, we were the only patrons in the store this morning as we were stopping by to grab coffee. this is not our usual store and were disappointed when we left and saw that we only had partial part of our food order. please make sure to check your orders before leaving as refunds are unavailable and not worth it for small food items that are truthfully overpriced to begin with.

Comment: Lauren was extremely rude. I waited for my drink and sandwich for over ten minutes. I got a drink that was Luke warm. I stood right next to the mobile pickup location. No one asked me if I needed help. Lauren called out my name and asked if I was also waiting for a sandwich. I answered yes, she walked away for another ten minutes… I was ready to walk away and she looked at me…and finally remembered and then grabbed my sandwich. What’s the point of ordering ahead and waiting 20 minutes?

This one wins because they have a lovely outdoor patio with umbrellas and tables and chairs for folks to congregate at. There are a few seats inside as well. There is one bathroom and it is heavily trafficked as one of the few available to 4th street patrons. Loads of free parking nearby.

Comment: Went here to get Peet’s for the first time in almost two years as I was abroad. Super excited, I ordered my favorite Black Tie - perfectly sweetened and wakes you up. Baristas were friendly as always! Then, I got my drink and my first sip was pure disappointment :-( It didn’t taste like coffee at all but water with condensed milk. The ice looked like it had been melting/smaller, so I was a bit confused. Cold brew is usually strong in terms of flavor and caffeine, which was not the case this time. Even the condensed milk overtook the color of the coffee (?). Sad!! 5 bucks for milky water was not the way I wanted to get back to Peet’s! However, I’m still hopeful and will update when I go again - hopefully with a better experience!

Comment: This Peets is like any other Peets. It has good, strong coffee and their usual array of coffees and teas. What it has that I like is its pleasant location, in a popular shopping area. There is spacious seating outdoor with many tables and chairs. On a sunny day you sit outside and people-watch. Public parking is plenty but sometimes it gets busy.It is also a good place to meet a blind date. Its casual enough and there are many exit points should the date turn out to be not what you expected.

Comment: Peets coffee is still what I use at home and will continue to do so. But I think Im done going to a store for prepared coffee drinks. Today I got a cappuccino to go. As I took my first sip after leaving the store, I found that it tasted weak and was barely warm. Hubby was the one to go into the store and told me the equipment is all push button machines now. So it appears we have have McDonaldized yet another experience, turning it into a bland shadow of itself. Machines simply dont replace people in this case.

Comment: Google maps has invited me to review Peets Coffee; I believe Im reviewing the Berkeley Fourth St. store, but I get around a little bit. We were all there: during the lingering virus-mitigation lockdown the whole experience of coffee shops was entirely altered. The pleasures of sitting among a diverse set of folk all doing as you are, enjoying some coffee and maybe some conversation was just about gone: one might perhaps cautiously nod to another soul who was also waiting distantly and maybe even venture a few words at best. The focus was on the quality of offerings and the cordiality of the staff, and the Fourth Street location was one where that really shone. They also have consistently had outside space and seating - this provided opportunities, but during the worst of it only groups who already knew each other seemed to take advantage. Things are slowly getting so much better as matters become less restricted, especially at this store and other locations where outside seating is available; the top of Solano location and the original home of everything at Vine and Walnut come to mind. I was also quite pleased to recently see how the downtown location on Shattuck had moved the inside tables and displays aside to create a really enhanced sense of openness - I will def be going back there much more again. I remain in awe and gratitude at all the staff who kept themselves together and upbeat, and by extension so many of the rest of us during the bleakest of times - Ive been increasing my tipping for some time now. Im also grateful to the planners and managers behind the scenes who kept our Peets available while so much was being crushed. We all know the feelings of hope this spring and early summer, and Im finding the Peets are a good place to get a bit more of a taste of that feeling again. Thanks.

I want the small individual tables to be back where the windows are. Comment: First time Ive had really weak coffee at Peets. Since the Private Equity bandits took over Peets & dismantled the quality and quantities of spices, teas -replacing his crown jewels with schlock Mighty Leaf mediocrities -and coffees while trading on the good reputation Mr. Peet built up, theyve slashed his carefully built up connections and collections of fine teas and coffees down to the bare bones of whatever sells the most (race to the bottom). Many of his employees, who owned the company after he died, stayed on for years out of loyalty to a well run company with high standards. Now you get who-gives-a-damn know-nothing employees who are treated like cogs in a gear box, interchangeable, with no knowledge even of what theyre selling, and no concern for the customer. Its steadily sinking to the level of Millennial Minimalist Chock Full O Nuts. Everythings stripped down as the Private Equity investors skim the cream, prepare to sell it on to the next greater fools. Mr. Peet - the scion of generations of Dutch Indonesian tea, coffee and spice merchants. would be spinning in his grave if he saw the destruction of the quality he adhered to. Dishwater weak coffee like this mornings at 4th St. is the beginning of the end.

This is unfortunately a killer, since the line for the bathroom is hard to tell apart from the line for drinks. The coffee is good as usual, but the layout is a problem, you find yourself running into things/people as you try to sit. It feels crowded.

Theyve stripped down, raised the prices on and cheapened the selection of teas which were his greatest pride, and expertise.Theyre probably using algorhythmns to determine what gets sold the most. Which takes no effort or skill. His employees were expected to interact with customers to a much higher standard, and were not formally hired until they read a book on teas ( & coffee), answered questions that proved their knowledge of the superior products he sold, and they stayed for many long years. So much for bean counters and private equity raiders dumbing down, sqeezing every last dime from and cheapening every brand that individuals developed carefully and were proud to own. Everything & everybodys now just a doller per hour commodity and interchangeable widget.
