Comment: Once again I was dragged to Lilac by people with fear of gluten. And again, I endured another sad meal pretending to be something it is not. I’d be less annoyed if they’d offer ONE, just one vegan option. Some of us want our friends to feel comfortable, and so we go. No more. I WISH an Indian or Mexican or other interesting culinary delight might let their flavors shine in a designated GF restaurant. They would be so much better, and likely offer easy and delicious plant based options. The only way to be vegan at Lilac is to order a salad without Feta, but pay full price. Hello, Lilac, might want to ponder the climate crisis a bit more. Just a thought.

Comment: I’m so happy this place exists. It’s so hard to find decent GF food in town and having an entire bakery and full breakfast/lunch menu is wonderful. It’s a little pricy for French toast or a sandwich, which feels like I’m being punished for my wheat allergy, but it’s the only place I can eat at in town that I know I won’t regret later. I wish there was also a dinner menu and later hours… there’s nowhere to eat dinner in town with decent GF options.

Comment: Nice café on State Street with the option of sitting outside. We ordered the Granola Bowl and the Berry Bowl. Unfortunately the yoghurt was forgotten, but it was brought to us straight away.I definitely recommend the iced coffee here. The place has a very pleasant atmosphere, clean toilets and friendly service. You have to order at the counter inside and then the food is brought to you.

Comment: Well, this place offers the most amazing gluten-free experience. I would highly recommend getting there early enough to also order all your treats and bakery items that you think you might want prior to the cut off when they close. We drove all the way from LA to come and enjoy this with a gluten-free family member and, as they were getting ready to close decided we’d like to get some more pastries to go and they refused to give us any. This is the reason for the three star service I really think they could’ve catered more to their customers while you are still in the bakery and it’s closing. It feels as though you should still be able to purchase anything else you might choose since I imagine it would not be fresh the next day? Other than that- the service is good! And the food is really amazing. You’ll find their bread used in other bakery cafés all the way through San Luis Obispo. If you’re in the Santa Barbara area and gluten-free, this really is a must do.

Comment: Food was good. But this story has to be shared. With my family and children on vacation and I politely ask for a new coffee because my coffee got cold and the gentleman/server rolls his eyes and sternly says “I just made it” and rudely walks away. He then brings me another one moments later with a disgusted look on his face and says nothing. Have zero reason to come back after that experience.

Comment: I bought a rosemary olive loaf here, which was low quality and ridiculously overpriced. They charge $20 for a loaf that had the texture of sponge cake. The taste was okay, but nowhere near worth that amount. Had a coffee there too, which was mediocre at best. They must be known for other stuff than bread and coffee I guess...

Have had custom ordered cakes twice, including a small wedding cake, both were delicious.Their breakfast & lunch menu are tasty, they use high quality ingredients including their thick sliced bacon.

Comment: We ordered our wedding cake from here last July and had an 8 round swirl texture chocolate decadence cake with flowers. We did not have any issues on picking up the cake and the cake itself looked very beautiful. However, when it was time to cut the cake, it easily fell apart and was crumbly. The taste of the frosting was undesirable, though I personally thought the chocolate flavor on the inside was okay, my husband and our family were still not pleased with how it tasted. Very unfortunate situation, how we wish the cake tasted as good as it looked.

Comment: My friend was visiting from out of State. It was her last day here, we decided to go to breakfast. The Lilac Patisserie was number 1 on our list. The reviews were good and the word around town said it was a treat not to be missed! We got there when they opened. We ordered, were given a number and we sat down to wait. My friend ordered Eggs Benedict, and I had French Toast with a side of Applewood Smoked Bacon. We had coffee with cream. My French Toast came with sweet, tasty strawberries & blueberries. There was real maple syrup served warm. My Toast was Gluten Free which was a big selling point for me.Our coffee came in individual porcelain pour pots and a small glass container of cream.Everything tasted great! The staff was warm and friendly. Everything was served with a smile, and it all looked (and smelled) awesome. The restaurant itself was so pretty and clean. The inside is painted a light lavender color with white touches. The floor had that tile called Penny Tiles. There are high ceilings and lots of glass. They have lots of delicious-looking cakes, and other baked goods made right on the premises.Be aware though, that not everything on the menu is offered daily. The baked good will fluctuate, as there isnt enough room for all of it.You may want to check out their website for specific cakes and order them ahead of time.We parked in the public lot behind the restaurant on Figueroa. If you are lucky enough to grab street parking, go for it.The restrooms are clean.

Comment: The Lilac Patisserie is an excellent place to eat!First off - it is difficult to find an establishment that is dedicated to gluten- free dining. The Lilac is passionate about providing top notch gluten-free food and desert. My wife and I stopped by after site seeing. The service was very friendly. It seemed the staff member knew all of the customers and went out of her way to provide quality service. The food was amazing. I got the chicken sandwich - best sandwich I had eating out in a while. The gluten-free bread was self-made and is not what you normally think of when gluten-free. My wife got the turkey club and was very impressed. Couple that with a glass of Brut - cannot be beat!We sat outside and enjoyed the views of state street! When leaving, we decided to buy some dessert....which is a selection of gluten-free items. Most places do not offer gluten-free deserts. It was impressive.Last - the business is serious about quality. An individual brought other food to the outside area. To avoid cross contamination, they promptly asked her to not set the food in the tables.Whether you are gluten-free or not, this place is top notch!

Comment: I have been here about a half dozen times: some days there are quite a few items to choose from (Im referring to their bakery items) - occasionally not so many. Their lemon bars are excellent, unquestionably the best item on offer - by far! Love the outdoor seating and overall atmosphere. You may park in the city lot in back and enter through Lilacs back entrance. As gluten free is the fad currently dominating the U.S., I can certainly understand and appreciate why this establishment is so popular with that crowd. By all means come here - just not with the expectation that the taste and/or texture will be on par with the same items using traditional recipes.

Comment: This on the main drag (State Street) in Santa Barbara. There are great teas and coffee to be had as well as a wide variety of truly delicious pastries. The location is easily accessible by walking from most anywhere in the downtown. The staff is very fast, friendly and helpful! Its very close to many art galleries and other cool places in town but not too close to the beach. This definitely is a great place to take a break and enjoy a pleasant drink and pastry!

Comment: This place is quite possiblity the best dedicated gluten free restaurant/bakery Ive ever been too. My wife has celiac, so Im always looking for places she can eat. We had breakfast here and we were worried maybe it wasnt 100% gluten free because of how delicious, fluffy, and moist everything was. I couldnt tell my toast apart from the normal bread that I usually eat, and honestly I liked it even better than my normal breads. Can confirm it is 100% gluten free though! If you have any struggles with gluten, this is the place to go

Comment: One of the best gluten free bakeries I have been to! We were traveling through California and we had to stop while in Santa Barbara. The cheesecake was out of this world, which says a lot as I enjoy making cheesecake at home. I also really enjoyed the coconut macaroons! They have a full breakfast and lunch menu with mimosas, if we ever make it back to CA I will make it a priority to come there and eat in restaurant. I took a grilled cheese sandwich to go, it was really good 😍

Comment: Wedding cake icing isn’t great. I ordered a six inch wedding cake (carrot) with flowers for our small wedding. In my opinion, the vanilla buttercream that is used for celebration cakes has the consistency of crisco and did not allow for those cute cake icing on the nose wedding moments. The cake was gorgeous but our guests did not enjoy the icing, a harsh ending to an otherwise great day. Even the interior layered icing was similar to crisco.I wrongly assumed that a cream cheese icing would be used due to the cake flavor. I enjoy GF and vegan baking and suspected that the cake I was given was vegan.I took a slice to the bakery and explained the situation. I wanted to know what happened and hoped it was simply a mistake. Not seeking money, as a home baker I was curious as to how this happened.I was told the correct icing was used, I should have read the website details regarding the choice of icing, and that it was not vegan icing. The manager was quite friendly, despite a senior manager (maybe owner) that overshadowed the conversation yet didn’t introduce himself.Luckily, the next day a catered lunch at Sanford winery surprised us with a GF/vegan cake from Solvang Bakery. Best cake I’ve had in a long time and the icing was perfect for tasting and those sweet wedding related moments.

Comment: The cake I ordered was beautiful and delicious. It was pouring rain, and because they dont have their name posted by the back door, which faces the public parking I walked 3/4 of a block to go in the front door! The floor was so slippery I almost fell down. The counter person offered the cake to me in just the bakery box. I reminded her it was pouring rain and asked for a bag. She gave me the most miniscule bag possible. I mentioned it was too bad they didnt have a back door, and she she said they did. I used it to shorten the distance to my car, and still the cake box was getting wet. A $60 cake ought to be packed well enough to withstand poor weather!

Comment: We specifically sought out a gluten-free bakery for our mid morning breakfast while in Santa Barbara. This portion of State Street is closed to cars, so the walk from block to block was tranquil and unrushed. We decided to share our breakfast between the two of us and selected one sweet dish (French toast with fruit) and one savory (eggs Benedict). A great idea! The food came quickly, along with a beautiful latté that was artfully presented. We sat outside and were in heaven as we relished every bite. Definitely worth seeking this place out.

Comment: We got a green tea, the vegetable quiche, a dirty chai latte and a breakfast sandwich. The food was good. The quiche was dead on, and the breakfast sandwich was pretty good as well. I had higher hopes for the brioche my sandwich was made with, but maybe it just wasnt their best bake. The drinks were enjoyable though. My biggest complaint here is value. With tip, our breakfast was $50, and honestly it just wasnt worth that. The place is pretty cute though, and the people are friendly. I personally wouldnt make the return trip for breakfast anyway, but I can understand why someone would.

Comment: Will not be coming back from lunch. The turkey club sandwich was mediocre at best: the artisan bread did not go well with the sandwich, the avocado was already browning and overall, the sandwich did not taste good. The only thing that tasted okay was the bacon. However, I did also order a slice of their cheesecake and that was exceptional. Perhaps they should stick to only serving desserts.

Comment: Lilac Patisserie is the BEST patisserie west of Manhattan. Entering a cosmopolitan, luxurious facility with gleaming cases of gorgeous pastries, reviewing the daily specials on an up-to-date electronic screen, I knew I was in for a treat. The food is superlative. One of the few restaurants which tosses its salads, not just dabbling dressing on top. Everything is home made with special touches, such as using ganache in the hot chocolate. Their cakes and pastries are wonderful, not markedly gluten free (which they are). A step above regular bakeries; a real treat.

Comment: Celiac Safe Restraint, There are no Glutens in this Restaurant. And the foods and deserts are all Yummy. My husband and I have been going to this restaurant for about 5 years now. And there is NOT any desert or food that they make that I do not like. It is all Yummy. I wish there were more restaurants like the Lilac Patisserie that catered to those of us of the Celiac community that cannot eat Glutens for health reasons and it has nothing to do with ones weight. It has to do with being very sick for days after I have consumed a product with Gluten in it. So, I am grateful for the Lilac Patisserie that goes out of its way to make all its food Celiac Safe from Glutens. The other thing I really appreciate about this restaurants foods is that the quality and level of these foods are made by a Chief who also has Celiac herself. So, she know whats shes doing and the taste and quality is up there with the best of restaurants. You dont feel like you are missing out on anything. My husband and I were just at Lilac yesterday, celebrating our 41st Wedding Anniversary. We had their wonderful Vegetable Quiche and and Omelet that we split and then we had couple of their wonderful deserts that we shared. The Blueberry Lemon Tart and Vanillia Chocolate Salted Carmel Cake, which we split and shared with each other. Absolutely Yummy!!!!!. A perfect way to celebrate our 41st Wedding Anniversary. So, thank you Lilac Patisserie for making our 41st Wedding Anniversary perfect!!!!!! and Safe to eat. Thank you. . . Thank you. . . Thank you. . .Its so wonderful to eat out and for it to be safe and Yummy!!!!!!!!. My taste buds are thank you . . . .

We had the Sea Salt Caramel and Chocolate Decadence cakes and both werent great (e.g. for the price I expected the Chocolate Decadence to be made with actual mouse, not some type of butter (?) cream). Comment: The lemon cheesecake is unbelievably good. I’ve never had such a perfectly baked cheesecake in my life. The coffee cake was also incredible. Everything is perfectly sweet and not overly so. Perfectly moist. These guys have done this before.

Comment: I ordered a variety of sandwiches, coffee/orange juice, salad, muffins, and fruit for a wedding shower and everything was fresh and tasty. You could easily tell Lilac uses quality ingredients and puts significant effort into their food.Antonio was very helpful with taking my order and delivery was simple and easy. Will definitely be back!

Comment: This place is delightful. High ceilings, bistro style seating with stone table tops -- its as authentic a French spot as Ive seen in the US. (Right down to the service times.) Dont expect croissants; do expect expensive cakes.

Comment: This is a cute place to come have pasties or brunch. I came here for pastries. Not really sure what I wanted, I settled for a slice of cheesecake and floorless chocolate cake. I took I together for dessert later tonight. Both were delicious. They have a small section of other goods and a few vegan cupcakes.Service is super slow here. You can also order special occasion cakes here. They had a beautiful beauty and the beast themed cake on display.

Comment: Completely gluten-free facility with delicious and beautiful professionally decorated cakes, great organic coffees, full breakfast, full lunch until 4 pm and deserts all day long. The cheesecake is real cheesecake, not like that vegan sugar paste GF cheesecake you find at the supermarket. I highly recommend the hazelnut cheesecake. The vegetable quiche is incredibly delicious, as are the pancakes. The pies, coffee cakes, waffles and French toast are also very good. The olive rosemary bread is the best. The espresso drinks are great. Vegan options are available, if you have a dairy or egg allergy. Bonus: the owners are lovely people.

Comment: An elegant bakery with very friendly staff. Lots of cakes and pastries to choose from. They sell all cakes by slice. I dropped one star because I didnt like the sea salt caramel cake at all. It looked very exciting but was hard, dry and overly sweet. I couldnt eat it which was a bummer after my initial excitement.

Comment: This little French style bakery has a nice atmosphere inside and out! It’s filled with all kinds of pastries, cakes, muffins, cookies and I would have loved to try everything there but it wasn’t the day for that! It’s not easy finding an exclusive gluten free bakery at least where I am from, most people don’t even know what gluten free means!! We had a nice experience on the back patio with drip coffee and tea my daughter had the key lime tart and loved it! I had a classic coffee cake that I wish was bigger! The wait staff was helpful and fast! I will definitely be back on my next visit to Santa Barbara!! If you are gluten free definitely stop by but be ready to pay a lot more than a regular bakery with portion sizes varied!! Well worth it in my opinion for the experience and not having to fuss about what I can eat! They also sell wedding cakes and bread that all looked amazing! Also available for sale is their own gluten free flour blend which I thought was amazing! Swing by during your stroll through Santa Barbara warm up with some drip coffee and something sweet I don’t think you will be disappointed!

Comment: Went to this place on Thursday morning to have breakfast and girl at the counter wasn’t friendly.I was not feeling welcome.Other than that, food was good! (we got avocado sandwich with 2 fried eggs, side of bacon and carrot spice cake with vanilla lattes)To me, carrot spice cake was little too sweet but it was delicious. Can’t believe everything is gluten free!

Comment: Absolutely delicious!!! We went for breakfast and ordered the avocado toast and the scrambled eggs with bacon. Both entrees were artfully prepared and had a delightful depth of flavor I want anticipating. The gluten free toast was a real treat as well. I would be remiss if I didnt mention the service, which was friendly and attentive.

Comment: Decor is fancy, but the food lacks imagination and taste is subpar. The chocolate chaud tastes (no joke) like Abuelitas chocolate you get from the store. The cookies were dull and bordering on stale (my chocolate creme crumbled extremely easily). Kudos for vegan cupcake choices.

A completely gluten free, dedicated restaurant, I could eat anything from their generous and delicious menu without worrying about cross-contamination. The staff was friendly and well-informed, the food--especially their pastries--was varied and well-made. Ate breakfast and lunch there, sevearl days in a row.

Comment: Such a great little bakery! Gluten free baked goods require unique flour blends to mimic gluten, and they do a fantastic job. I loved the tiramisu, and picked up some goodies (brioche!) for my celiac friend. If you need gluten free baked goods, this is a wonderful cozy pick to grab a bite or some cake to go.

The sophisticated decor and feel of the seating area matches the quality and taste of the food and beverages perfectly and, when combined with the helpful and friendly employees, creates an amazing place to stop for bruch or just stop by for a pastry and coffee.I have not been able to try their cakes yet, but Ive heard only good things and the decorators clearly know what theyre doing.

Comment: Incredible! Just like a French patisserie. We had an outstanding breakfast. I choose an omelette which was perfectly cooked light, and dusted with fresh herbs, avocado, carmelized onions, perfectly paired with real whipped butter, bitter orange marmalade, and the lightest rosemary bread toast. This is like the French eat, good food that doesnt mean obscene-sized portions, but the highest-quality, best tasting food that leaves you full and complete in awe. The bowl of berries was generous with the sweetest raspberries, strawberries and blueberries, and real hand whipped cream. The scrambled eggs my kids ordered were light and airy, I have never seen them cooked that well in a restaurant and reminded me that the folds in a chefs hat represent all the ways s/he can make eggs. I am convinced you cant have a bad meal here. The desserts we got were simply heavenly. Couldnt have been happier with our meal.

Comment: Loved this place. I’ve been gluten free for about 8 years now and this was the BEST gluten free bread I have ever tasted anywhere. The menu is a bit pricey, but for gluten free food the price was normal, and for the quality so so worth it. Even my non-gluten free friend thought the bread was amazing. Also had their key lime tart which was delicious. Will be coming back here anytime we’re in SB for sure! Apart from the delicious food, the place was really cute, had great music (Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke, Parov Stellar while we were there), nice natural light, and attentive staff. There was also a clear window so you could see one of the cake decorators working, and she was amazing! Wish we were hungry enough to try a piece of cake!

Comment: My wife has recently realized she has a gluten intolerance. We made a trip to Santa Barbara just to check out this dedicated gluten free bakery. They also serve sandwiches and salads, but the pastries are the thing here. I did have the tuna sandwich and it was great on gluten free bread. Located on popular State Street, check this place out when in Santa Barbara.

Comment: A wonderful bakery. I first went here with a friend of mine who has celiac disease, and if you have any type of gluten sensitivity this place is heaven sent - there isn’t a single speck of gluten to be found within these walls. My wheat-loving palette, however, is always delighted to eat one of the tasty pastries, enjoy a toasted sandwich, take in a slice of one of their rich and flavorful cakes, or lick clean a plate of one of their delicious fruit pies. One of those and a pot of hot chocolate at the outdoor tables on State makes for great people watching.

Comment: The best place for gluten free pastries! Everything is light and fluffy, you cant even tell youre eating gluten free. They also make the best GF bread which you can buy in loaves, but call ahead for that because they do sell out quick! Comment: OMG, sweet and savory gluten free heaven. On recent visit to the Santa Barbara area, I relied on Lilac Patisserie for delicious safe food. First tried their turkey sandwich on rosemary olive bread. Perfect blend of flavor. Treats, the lemon bar and brownie. I think the brownie was the best brownie I have ever had, and that includes the 49 years I was eating gluten. Next day, breakfast sandwich. Interesting combo. Coffee cake was delicious as was the blueberry scone. On my last visit I had the quiche Lorraine and the strawberry cheesecake to go. I hadnt had cheesecake in 7 years. What a treat. There crusts are light and flakey and hold together. I would love to know what their secrets are.

Comment: I was so happy to find this gem while visiting Santa Barbara. An entirely gluten free bakery and cafe... heaven. I had a sandwich, which meant that I had to purchase two loaves of bread to take home and freeze (the rosemary olive bread is my favorite). Then I had to try two of their desserts. The buttery crust under the lemon meringue pie was so delicious. I saved the coffee cake for breakfast the next morning, which was also very good.

Comment: I dont like giving negative reviews, especially for a place that caters to having an all GF menu (hallelujah ), but my experience here was not what I expected. I ordered a cake here for my sons first birthday. I originally asked if they could make the cake with no decoration on top. They said they could do that for me only to get a call 2 days later explaining that they couldnt. They also told me they could write Happy Birthday on the side, but never informed me that they couldnt before writing it on the top. I had planned on putting a couple of things on top and could no longer do so with the writing there. They said they could scrape it off but it would obviously ruin the top of the cake. All I got from the employee and manager was a Im sorry. No replacement cake, no discount, nothing. They ruined my plans for my sons first birthday cake. We continued to have lunch here trying to bypass the situation. We ordered 2 turkey club sandwiches. They were good, but they do not come with any sides other than a half of a strawberry and a slice of orange for $14. During lunch my husband noted they forgot to bring out the tart we ordered. When we informed the manager of this situation he apologized again and said it would be right out. At this point we asked him to just cancel the tart. We decided to just exchange it for a loaf of bread. We just wanted to get out of here. He said, well you will need to pay the difference. Really? I dont mind paying for great food and service, the food was good and the cake was great, but the service was sub par. Also make sure you look at what youre tipping after you order. For not much service you are suggested to tip 18-25%. I prefer to tip after I eat based off my service experience. Not before.

Delicious quiches and sandwiches make for a lunch treat and dont leave without buying some of the best bread Ive ever had gluten free or not to take home. For those stopping in Santa Barbara on a trip up north it will go wonderfully well with the olive oil and balsamic you find a little further up in the wine region of Los Olivos.

Comment: Being Gluten Free has never been so delicious!I have been gluten free for 9 years and hoped one day a place like this would open. Being able to order anything on a menu is a total luxury, and an added bonus that everything is actually good! I have a three year old daughter who was thrilled to be able to pick out her own Slice of cake and watch the cakes being decorated. I am bringing my mother (also GF) here for Mothers Day and I know she will fall in love too!I only wish you had opened earlier, before we moved out of Santa Barbara. So... Comment: Recently my family was in Santa Barbara for a birthday celebration. We had lunch at the Lilac Patisserie after seeing the gluten free sign on their door. I have been eating gluten free about ten years and have never had the luxury of choosing from an entire gluten free menu. The available selection was overwhelming, with three choices of sandwich bread! Between us, we had all three and all three were delicious. You would never guess any were gluten free. We shared a key lime tart and chocolate chip cookie which were also wonderful. The beautifully decorated cakes were as exquisite as any I have seen in any specialty bakery and to think all were gluten free. Oh how I wish Lilac Patisserie had a branch in Tempe Az.!!
