Comment: Just savored the fried chicken this evening 😋 So moist and crispy. It came with 2 sauces which were spectacular. I hope Matthew continues with this awesome dish. I also savored the donuts which are served on Wednesday. I had the cherry jam filled one and the plain sugar coated one ( no, I did not eat them all at once!) .I dont know how the crew and cooks do it in such a small space but somehow they produce great treats.I live across the street from the bakery and I can tell you they get there at 4:30 am to start the baking process. The scents wafting into my condo almost dtive me mad!!Anyway, you have to try their array of baked goodies and all their other menu items, too . You will not be disappointed.

Comment: My son lives in the Piedmont Pines / Montclair area of the Oakland Hills and recommended L’ACAJOU for made to order, fresh sandwiches. I went there for lunch and loved L’ACAJOU! The soup & sandwich lunch (I had the curry lentil soup and 1/2 Steve on baguette) and ordered a tuna melt take-away for my wife. The sandwiches were delicious and backed by excellent service and a relaxed ambience. Easy parking was an added bonus! Will definately go to L’ACAJOU again!

Comment: This French cafe is tucked away in the Oakland hills and I hesitate to review so to not get the secret out! This is an authentic and unpretentious French cafe with incredibly top of the line pastries and also healthy breakfast options if you are trying to avoid all the butter, but why? Life is short, eat damn good pastries then go for a hike at Redwood Park near by! You will burn it off and have an exquisite day!

After all, who wants to find a coffee shop and a pastry when it’s 90° outside in Oakland?At the same time, I was hoping for a sense of ease while they’re cleaning up, for instance, “it’s OK we’ll be here for a bit anyhow so you can relax.“Instead I got, “we’re going to be closing in five minutes,” five minutes after I sat down with my large decaf latte and a raspberry pistachio pastry (by the way, both of those were great). It was only 3:40pm.So, I should know better and immediately go to Philz or Pete’s or Blue Bottle and get to hang out until 6:30pm. But I wanted to check out what was more local to me, and now I know.Come here when you have time before closing, get a pastry and coffee, and relax in the curious French ambience

Comment: For my first (and last) time ever here, I placed a pastry order worth almost $100. I needed it for a work event on Monday so, planning ahead, I ordered the Friday prior. I used Doordash, or similar service. An hour before the time I had scheduled for pickup they call me to tell me they have maybe a third of all the specific pastries I had requested. Again, were talking about $100 worth of pastries, some as expensive as almost $8 a piece, so I didnt want the leftovers nobody else purchased, I wanted what I had ordered with plenty of anticipation and already paid for! Anyhow, the simply didnt have them and with such a short notice I couldnt go driving around to find some other alternative. So I had to settle with what they had. Rest assured, Ill never go back.

The food is consistently quite good and the pastries in particular are incredible.HOWEVER.Everything about the service, organization, timeliness, physical layout/setup of the place, is an unmitigated disaster. I have seen staff here literally get into yelling matches with customers who are complaining that their order wasnt right. Theres no way to know if your food will take 2 minutes or 50 minutes or if theyll lose the order or if theyre making the many, many Doordash orders first. Theyre constantly out of almost all their baked goods, especially on weekends/holidays, which is pretty wild considering its first and foremost a bakery cafe.Its understandable that a place like this is boom/bust like weekend brunch, and the space is limited, but overall the customer service to make the experience better is nonexistent or even rude/dismissive. Some improved management would make this place so much better.

There’s no sense of order among a staff that seems to be in constant turnover and training during its busiest times, no preemptive efforts to give diners a sense of when an order will come out, and a layout that is not fit for the amount of business it gets, and a ton of yellow jackets that hover around tables waiting for food with no traps in sight.Get your orders to go and plan to get them in way in advance.

Comment: Really bummed to be put in this position because this is a local restaurant and I was happy to support them despite regularly missing items from orders (I assumed it was because I was using a third party app, but I digress).Today, I tried to use a coupon I was given via email, and stated on the bottom that it was valid both in store and online (via their square) and would expire 5/23 (today is 5/22). It did not work online, so I tried calling in the order. When I went to redeem the coupon, I was told that the coupon code did not exist and was therefore not valid. Confused, I asked if the email did not come from L’Acajou and was told “it clearly did”, but he was unable to do anything about it. I then asked to speak with someone who could do something about it, and was told no. I then explained that, in my understanding, coupons coming from a company needed to be honored and made a joke about not remembering the legal code (realizing now that it’s likely to be misinterpreted and for that I’m sorry). Eventually the owner showed up, and while I did get the coupon applied, the owner was unnecessarily rude during the whole interaction, seeming to imply that I was wrong for wanting a coupon that appeared to be valid and came from them to be honored. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth that I would have dropped had the owner not continued to deflect any responsibility for the confusion (keeping in mind this all stemmed from a coupon that came from them, and they admitted to coming from them), which is why I took the time to share this here.Go if you would like, the food is good! Check orders before you walk out if doing takeaway, and don’t try to use coupons if you do go. This experience means that I won’t be going back personally. Owner probably says good riddance, which is fine, because it sorta bolsters my point about the whole experience of being told a coupon they created wouldn’t be honored and why it left a bad taste in my mouth.

BUT if i order something and omit the egg, i don’t get a discount. understand they will not apply the surcharge, but it’s only fair that they cut my cost if i am not omitting the ingredient they deem fair to apply a surcharge for.the cashier said “that’s just the cost of the sandwich” but i disagree. ten years in this industry. the egg costs something and if your patron is asking for you to keep it, then you should pass that savings to them. ***especially if you think it’s fair to charge them extra PER EGG if they keep it on their order. it’s the optics of fairness which is striking as super off and isn’t cool.maybe y’all should reprice items without the eggs and then just charge what you need to per egg if someone wants them. then the pricing is clear without us having to experience this strange unfairness.just for reference i love this cafe, and i hope that management sees this. will revisit if management considers this issue.

Comment: I have been here when they recently opened this cafe/bakery everything was so good including the kind crew who were baking things and managing the restaurant. Today I had a very bad customer service and the food was very bad too. Hamburger beef was something like fast food restaurant, bread french toast smells meat. Potatoes that comes with omelette at least a day old and has the same meat smell. I went to the counter and told them this and response was yeah we use the same grill for everything!? Even I told them I can not eat the bread they didnt replaced it. If you are a good cook and you are using the same grill for everything then you would intuitively know meat would be the last on that grill. Vegetarians vegans have no choice here unless you like that meat smell on your French toast potatoes and even bread. Everyone working here is very rude and very spoiled I dont understand why people go eat here and pay $66 and above for 4 people when you have better options like Rick and Ann s, Fournee etc. They are not a bakery for sure everything was at least a day old and chewy and they were out of plain croissant at 9 am on Saturday, when you dont bake those you say we dont bake plain croissants here. I regret going there again and wont go back and waste my money again for sure. Even an average breakfast place like Montclair egg shop is better than this overrated place. In addition to all these we cleaned up the table ourselves tables were not clean. And while we were leaving a spoiled and rude staff yelled behind us you should clean your stuff is it my mom talking to me like that, even so it would be a very rude mom.

Come on.I just came first a bagel but didnt see any on the menu so I grabbed a BLT sandwich. $13 + 20% tip on a take out...and there were only 3 slices of bacon on the sandwich. Kind of whack.I think its a spot you come to if you grew up around this block or if youre needing convenience, but I wouldnt recommend it and I wouldnt stop there again.

The gentleman at the register gave serious ‘don’t give a crap’ vibes. I ordered a hard chai but got a regular. I offered to pay for the difference when I went back to the register but was charged $2 for the shot but the price difference between the regular chai and the dirty chai is $1.25. The chai was lukewarm and tasted like water. I ordered the breakfast quesadillas and that was actually pretty good.

Everyone behind the counter seemed friendly enough. Would occasionally stop in here on my way to work since its right on the way but not until they get the kinks worked out.EDIT: I wrote my previous review two years ago. I was a bit skeptical of this place surviving, but they have and theyve won me over. Ive raised my rating from 3 stars to 4. Service is still a bit uneven but its got great charm, a varied, high-quality menu and the young staff really show some hustle. Not perfect, still room for improvement, and Im going to start eating there as much as possible before they really work out all the kinks and it becomes the next 2-hour-wait place.

I ordered an Almond Croissant and breakfast sandwich while my friend ordered avocado toast with a sea salt chocolate chip cookie. We both loved our food. We ordered and sat outside on the small patio to eat. The sun was out so it was perfect. There are a few benches with shade incase you dont want to get a tan.There was also plenty of parking outside. We were able to get a spot right in front which was convenient.The con is that they charge a 15% fee if you dine on the patio. Since we paid a fee, we expected some level of service. However, all they do is bring your food to you. I was really turned off that they dont clean the tables after each person. There were crumbs and other food all around our table. We wouldve atleast expected them to clean the tables off or bring utensils. You will have to do all of that yourself.

Comment: Ordered cappuccinos, smoothie and pastries. They first brought out the cappuccinos steaming hot - the milk was burnt and the foam was non existent. The cafe wasn’t super busy at that time, but people started showing up and it had been 15 mins with no pastries or smoothie yet. We went inside to check on it and they had completely forgot our order. We had to tell them which pastries and smoothie we had. It would have been nice if they simply apologized for forgetting. This was after I had already tipped in advance.

We paid an extra 15% to sit on the patio which is fine but there was a giant pile of food and dishes from someone who left before us and no one made any effort whatsoever to clean it up even though they came outside several times. This was our first time eating here to try something a little different while we were on a bike ride, next time well just go to Montclair Village. This was especially disappointing since this was the first time weve eaten out somewhere in months and it would have been nice to not sit next to a giant pile of plates. Staff just didnt seem to care at all.

Id have gone hungry many a Sunday morning, had it not been for their equally delicious and unique french toast and their perfectly savory chorizo. Those superfood smoothies really hit the spot when youre stuck in the house hiding from an invisible monster, smoke that turns day into night, and a nation on the verge of social and economic collapse. Thanks for showing up every day and bringing us the little french delights that help us remember that its all going to be okay, just when we need it the most. Bravo. Comment: I have always been a fan of Lacajou, but was super disappointing after my last run with them. I ordered through a catering platform, and it was an utter failure. Missing food items, yogurt was packaged in a paper box instead of a plastic container, 30 min delay. I used to order for large groups and i will not come back to this caterer again. Super embarrassed to face people when they ask is this all the food you got to feed this group of people.

After we ordered a sandwich the cook, who was drinking beer, scoffed all of that for this in a hostile tone.This place is okay at best and I dont see then getting far if this is how they treat patrons. Its well worth a drive to somewhere that appreciates your business.

Comment: This is my first time here. Waiting for my food. Bakery looks great. Why only one star? The place is filthy. I’m sitting inside at a table only because it’s a tad too cold for outside. Sweep the damn floors under the table. Get the corners. That disgusting matted paper towel used to balance an uneven table could perhaps be changed. I’m assuming the kitchen is not filthy but this is my first and probably last time here. Just gross.

I also see that they have handmade baguettes for sale, which can be tough to find. Will be back for the handmade bread when I have some cheese at home to go with it!

Comment: So why 3*? Probably bad timing 30 minutes before closing on Sunday afternoon, still half full of customers. I need to like this place I belong to two major hiking groups who hike nearby regularly. Ordered freshly made small Macha latte, small earl grey tea and two small slices of apple tart $18.50. Service poor, nice young woman but seemed inexperienced/tired? Tables dirty, not cleared, dishes stacked on racks. BUT most importantly tea and latte luke warm, so cold by the time we carried it to the table. Apple tart very good, nice glaze very delicate 1/4 deep, but $6.50 for a thin wedge 3 at thickest part?Ill go back, its so close to home, next time Ill take photos. Tasty macha latte and unbrewed tea would have been great with hot water. I like the idea of fresh tea put into the disposable individualized tea bags. Tea pots would be good.

Twice the service has been really slow and they made mistakes in my order.The pastries look good, but I havent tried them. Sandwiches are quite good. Generally the sides havent been good. Today I got the baked sweet potato fries. First, the portion size was a joke. Im not in favor of giant portions, but this was a ~6 oz Chinese takeout container (right down to the Pagoda) that was only half full. They were soggy and bland.

The morning service guy is NOT a people person or not a morning person. He is slow and it is not that he is unfriendly, its just that he acts like he would rather be anywhere else. And, theyre not really ready when they open. Which is unfortunate because I am hurrying to work an really want a pastry and coffee in a snap. Starbucks will have it waiting, but this is better and local. But that efficiency is kiiiiinda tempting.

Comment: Avoid this place. Service is horrible and whomever is making the food doesnt have much experience in the restaurant business. Maybe they just havent figured out their business but my experience was not a good one. A few examples: Burger was completely raw and cold in the middle. Oh, they serve a burger but dont have mustard. When I asked that they remake my burger, they cooked the original Patty with the cheese on it which fried the cheese to a crisp. Good luck with that

Comment: Wow - this place was a find! This tiny French style cafe in Oaklands Woodminster neighborhood serves up amazing little breakfasts and lunches. I think they might be adding dinner, but not positive. We had really nice egg sandwiches and pancakes when we stumbled upon this place by accident, then came back a few days later to do it again. The only downside -- coffee is sold Euro style - one cup is included with a coffee purchase for (I think) $2.50. Another buck will get you one refill. I was a little bummed about that the first time we had breakfast here, but just came pre-caffeinated on the second. Still a gem.

(4/5 Green Stars)Downsides first: the layout could be improved and the young chap who served me was a bit surly – but neither of these things bothered me (and the chap was fast :). The coffee and pastries were both very good and I’m wavering between 4 and 5 stars, but I’m going to go for 5 stars because prices were reasonable and it’s really one of the best places that I know of within a radius of a 2 or 3 miles – that’s the approx. distance to La Farine or Timeless Coffee ;) And speaking of La Farine, I think my plain croissant from L’acajou was every bit as good as theirs. (Perhaps Andrew C. visited on an off-day.) Their cookies were pretty good, but the standouts for me were the cheddar chipotle biscuit and the banana bread – both very memorable. Also – organic, fair-trade coffee for around $2? Yes please!I’m also giving them 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons:• Nomadic Coffee: All of the coffee is organic, most is fair trade certified, and some is even Smithsonian bird-friendly (that’s pretty much the highest sustainability standard for coffee). Nomadic seem like a good bunch.• Waste minimization at L’acajou was pretty good. I had my own cup but forgot to notice if there was a cup discount.• Decent selection of vegetarian options, and a vegan salad.• They do seem to use organic quinoa and greens for some of their veggie options.
