Comment: Ive had good experiences with the staff. But beware that they have changed their matcha to a bad tasting, pre-sweetened powder mix. I ordered an unsweetened matcha latte. When I got my matcha, it was undrinkable. I politely asked for an unsweetened matcha and was told thats was the only powder they had. I dont understand why that wasnt stated before I paid. But i needed caffeine, so I walked about with an iced coffee I didnt want. Disappointing

Comment: 10/2023 update: Changing this star rating from my original rating to five stars. I’m so glad I went back here because it must have been an off day the first time I had visited. I haven’t tried the Vietnamese Iced Coffee again but their signature drink, The Kingslayer, is A-MAY-ZING. I get it iced and it’s super refreshing and tasty. Also, since I’ve returned I’ve found that the service level here is much better and there are typically two employees which helps matters immensely. One of my favorite coffee shops now.First time trying Hob Coffee East Village which is a super cute coffee shop on the corner of K and 11th near Petco Park. They only had one employee working which made wait times a bit long since she had to take orders and then make drinks but she was doing her best. Thankfully it wasn’t super busy or I don’t think we would have waited. Inside they have plenty of seating and sell various items related to Hob Coffee with City Connect Padres colors.We ordered the Vietnamese Iced Coffees today which, according to their menu, is four espresso shots poured over ice and condensed milk in a 16oz cup. Unfortunately the sweetness of the condensed milk couldn’t overcome the burnt taste of the espresso in these drinks. I really wanted to like them. I don’t know if the fact that there was only one person working contributed to poor espresso making because she felt rushed or if the beans were just not of good quality but we couldn’t even drink all of it.I’m giving three stars based on the cute location and vibe as well as the kindness of the barista but I don’t think that I would order an espresso here again. If we hadn’t take the drinks to go we might have asked them to make us something else.

Comment: Small coffee shop that has interesting flavored coffee. Being a nerd I just got a standard dark roast with 2 shots and it was STRONG. The PB Banana Honey toast was good and definitely recommend it if you like a sweet breakfast that isn’t chocolate-related. Right up the road from the San Diego Convention Center and next to the Padres’ stadium so easy walking distance from those spots.

It was our 1st time there. We ordered the hot cookie latte topped with a wafer and an iced vanilla latte both with extra shots of espresso. Drinks were good. Great quality coffee beans… a nice toast. Only con- all sizes come with 2 shots, so the only difference is paying for extra milk. Otherwise, positive experience. Average pricing. Next time, I’m trying to Vietnamese.

Comment: 5 stars for the coffee, 1 star for the breakfast. Well balanced and nice cappuccino and latte, unfortunately the 2 oatmeals were nothing like on the Google map picture or on the menu. Instead of steel-cut oatmeal with granola, chocolate chips, coconut flakes, walnuts and honey in a bowl we got regular oatmeal with a couple pecans thrown in served in a paper cup. Disappointing, maybe because it’s Monday?

Comment: Excellent coffee, but a poorly managed business. On the Monday morning I went to Hob Coffee there was only one barista working. Since the coffee shop prepares food, takes online orders, and makes coffee, it was impossible for her to keep up with the demand. It took an average of 20-30 minutes to get a drink because the barista had to do everything. Our food order (an avocado and prosciutto toast) took a hour, although she warned me that the order would likely take a half hour to make. Unfortunately, I was told this after paying for my order.There wasn’t an extraordinary line, although there were multiple food orders she had to prepare. One of our lattes was supposed to be made with whole milk, but appeared with oat milk. I didn’t want to correct the order for fear of it taking another 20 minutes to get it right.I felt sorry for the employee that got stuck with dozens of people waiting around to get their drinks. What kind of a company let’s their employee take the brunt of indignation from its customers because of inadequate staffing and planning? It occurred to me that the barista could’ve gotten stuck their by herself because someone quit or called in sick, but it seemed unfortunate for all the customers who had to wait a long time for their fix with no cavalry on the way to help. I can’t imagine that any employee would or should put up with such poor management for very long. And customers won’t return if they can’t get their orders in a reasonable amount of time, even if the food quality is very good.If you plan to visit this coffee shop in the future, make sure that there’s enough staff to get your coffee in a reasonable amount of time. Several people bailed in line because they didn’t have enough time to waste waiting around.I also thought the shop was quite dirty. Tables were not wiped off, milk containers not returned to the refrigerator, jugs of cleaning solution laying around under the sink, a dirty food prep area, and no public bathroom. The bathroom said ‘Employees Only.’ Given the homeless population around this area of town, it’s little wonder that there’s no public bathroom, but no bathroom in an establishment selling food and drinks? I wonder how often this business is inspected for cleanliness. Coming from a food service background, I suspect that it’s cleaned only when it’s inspected.It’s unfortunate that such good coffee and food is being run by such poor management. I only post reviews of good places I frequent so that people have the benefit of going to a great place, but in this case I’m posting a warning to customers to beware of bad service due to poor management practices. Hopefully, Hob Coffee will improve their business because they have a great product to work with.

The oatmeal had steel cut oats which tasted like the kind you get at Starbucks or Peets Coffee. Except Hobs comes with chocolate chips 😀. The sweet oats paired well with coffee ☕!Great service all around. The woman recommended the coffee based on what I like and was working very hard and efficient by herself while a line was forming. Very admirable!

They are both such great conversationalists and Im so proud of what theyve achieved. The quality of their coffee and tea is amazing and the location is fantastic, somewhat hidden away yet accessible to all. This really is the best coffee shop in San Diego.

Comment: Bean bar is a place that you must stop if you are in San Diego its a fabulous Cafe and weve been going here for years. Quality is one of the things that comes to mind. The staff is super friendly and helpful and there are many options to choose from here.

Comment: I requested Non-Fat Milk to be added to my coffee and they insisted on adding cream instead.I asked for powdered cinnamon and I was told they dont have it, as I left the shop, I suggested they should have cinnamon next time and instead of at least granting a consideration, I was told they would definitely not have it!It seems no interest in addressing clients wishes. It will be difficult for me to visit a second time, although it Inca the nearest coffee shop to my office.

Comment: Nice little cafe in East Village. Located in a not crowded area. Was easily able to get a table for myself lunch time on a weekday. Wide open feel with a ton of natural light. Their cold brew was smooth and the avocado toast hit the spot. Typical pricing for a modern coffee shop ($3 for a shot). Definitely a nice place to relax and post up to do some work.

Comment: Decent place. Cozy, open, bright, friendly. Good prices. Coffee was alright. Better than many of the places I went while in San Diego, but it was barely lukewarm. I would have liked quite a bit more heat. Coffee of choice was a meil this time, they used generic honey and it was a bit sweeter than I like but I will say that I like less sweet than typical. Overall it was a nice place and tons of coffee extras for purchase. Mugs, beans, makers, etc.

Comment: Leaving the new Central Library downtown, I ran across this cute coffeeshop!Great to have all the great coffee popping up around town. In addition to the standard lattes and such, theyve got all the trendy coffee drinks - like cold-brew and pour-overs. Nice space, lots of light - theyre also looking into outdoor seating. Friendly service. I will return!
