Comment: This place had the best Nitro cold brew coffee I have ever had. I dont call coffee life changing, but in this case I would say that cold brew nitro comes damn close to that if not borderline addictive. Enjoy it with caution 😄

Comment: One of two locations in the Santa Barbara area (the other is “uptown” on De La Vina, which includes their coffee roasting operation).Handlebar coffee is a popular destination for locals, including those who prefer to work in the environment of a coffee shop.I find their coffee to be excellent, not too strong but certainly not weak. Their espresso drinks are expertly made. Service is excellent; the staff is always friendly, quick, and willing to make subtle adjustments to items if requested.

Comment: The drink menu isn’t that big to choose from and i think it’s overpriced. However the drinks are not bad, I ordered a matcha latte and there was no sweetener BUT it was decent. I also ordered a chocolate croissant and it was easily the worst one I’ve ever had in my life. It was hard and crispy. The service was nice tho and it had a lively atmosphere.

Comment: The kind of coffee shop Id frequent regularly if I lived in the area. I appreciate how early theyre open since I am an early riser and need coffee right away when I get up. The staff were friendly, the selection of pastries is excellent, the coffee tastes fantastic and the interior is cool. Its also large which makes me think even when its busy, there should be seating for everyone. Though it wasnt crowded when I was in to order takeaway coffee.

Comment: My husband and I went to Santa Barbara for my birthday. I was feeling old, and you know like having birthday sadness. He took me to Handlebar coffee and my whole life changed. Im not joking. I had the Turmeric Oat milk latte! The taste and smell and whatever potion was in there brought a huge smile and tears to my face. I immediately bought a bag of beans and told the lady barista that their whole coffee changed my outlook!!! This seems unbelievable but its completely true! We went there 3 days in a row. 3 days! Everyone was so nice and kind and on the last day they gave me my turmeric latte on the house. The whole ambiance of the place is welcoming and joyful! If youre ever in Santa Barbara and youre sad or worried youre getting older or having a bad day or a bad year, go there and hear the laughs, enjoy the conversation, meet the kindest staff and baristas, and have the best coffee in the world!!!

Comment: Handlebar is and continues to remain my favorite locally owned business in Santa Barbara. There’s something to be said for owners that are hands on with their craft - it creates an unparalleled quality control. I’ve ordered the same latte hundreds of times, and it always seems to come out exactly how I like it. I have never been to the shop without seeing Kim pulling espresso at the stand, likely the work ethic stemming from her professional cycling background. My brothers and I all go to this location, and my wife and I love to bring our little ones here for a quick dose of normalcy, and pumpkin muffin or cowboy cookie as a reward.

Comment: The best coffee shop in Santa Barbara! Their coffee is so good. I got an iced vanilla latte that was amazing, and my friend got an iced drip coffee. The cups are great sizes (Not those small cups that shops charge you $4 for) and they don’t charge you for oat or almond milk. Comment: The cafe latte was excellent, however they don’t seem to know how to make a green tea latte (their matcha had a bitter finish that tasted like black pepper); however the service was really lacking, they handed us someone else’s order, then made it seem like it was our fault ( they clearly didn’t have a system in place for checking names); they also served us our order after many other people behind us in line were served. They had 4 people working on orders behind two espresso machines and 2 people at the register so there were plenty of staff but no one seemed to know what they were doing. One of the baristas put her finger into her ear while making drinks (ewe), thankfully she didn’t make ours otherwise I would have left. The breakfast items were pretty good but this place is really lacking in service so can’t recommend going there, would not return.

Comment: Coffee was decent, though possibly not worth the long line. Have been looking for a balanced coffee since arriving in the US. The beans here are well roasted though mild in flavour so need multiple shots. Order extra hot as the long queue means they rush through the milk process.Enjoyed my pastry and always love a bicycle themed cafe. I passed the other Handlebar on my bike over the weekend and should perhaps have ridden up to that one outside of the tourist zone.

Comment: Such a delightful coffee spot.In two of my most recent roadtrips (to San Clemente and Los Angeles from the Bay Area, respectively), I decided to stop for coffee in Santa Barbara, and I am so pleased to have found Handlebar. The first time I stopped by, I grabbed an iced coffee and a berry scone — the latter of which was slightly overpriced for just how bread-y it was — but overall a good stop and snack. The space has both indoor and outdoor seating (which is in the alleyway alongside the building) both of which are serene and quiet to spend some time in.The second time, I grabbed a regular drip — nothing too special — and a vegan cowboy cookie, which was delicious but also slightly overpriced.Ultimately, a very nice and sweet coffee shop, but expect to spend at least $10 with tip if youre hungry for a snack as well.

Comment: I came to this coffee house the other day and asked for some unsweetened almond milk because I am a diabetic. The young man helping me was nice but kind of clueless about being sugar free and when he asked what seemed to be the manager she told me “we’re the real deal here”.Really? That’s your answer to someone who will suffer a sugar spike and will feel bad as a result? That’s like telling a person in a wheel chair sorry, dude this is standing room only we have no place for your wheels! Needless to say, I won’t be coming here again as this is a one size fits all mentality.

Comment: This place was fantastic! Hand down the best cafe in Santa Barbara. I am definitely coming back here next time Im in Santa Barbara. We heard good reviews for this place so gave it a try & boy it didn’t disappoint! It was busy morning so stood in line for 10 mins & waited for our drinks for 5-7 mins more. Drinks are $3 to $6.And it was worth the wait! Their coffee was amazing and the baked items were delicious. I ordered a double latte & it was just perfect! Airy, foamy & bursting with best espresso flavor! It came in their signature white cups. This place is very cozy & has a friendly vibe. They have outdoor seating too. You get a beautiful view of Santa Barbara presidio. We also ordered cinnamon roll, cookies & almond scone. We loved it all!

Coffee is delicious, pops on your tongue & leaves your mouth watering. Friendly staff, lots of dogs, yummy pastries. A little pricey but worth it for a quality experience. Wish I had a Handlebar at home!

Comment: Fun and busy coffee shop. Coffee cups are small (I usually get a large Starbucks and had to drink a cup & a half of the large at Handlebar). Interesting and fun selection of retail goods including stickers ($1). The coffee shop also uses a pastry bag that has a wax on it that preserves pastries (better than most) over a couple of days!

Comment: Quaint little cafe in Bragg Creek area that offers quality mountain bike rentals. Stopped here twice passing though the area with some friends.I ordered a ham sandwich a london fog and sime carrot cake and all three were excellent. The owner and staff were super friendly and personable. My friend had brake trouble earlier in the summer during a mountain biking trio in the west bragg area and the owner helped out my friend bleed the brakes on his bike free of charge. Highly recommend checking this cafe out if you are in the Bragg Creek area.

Comment: This place is fantastic! I will 100% be back here next time Im in Santa Barbara! The coffee is amazing, the food is incredible (Im pretty sure they get their baked goods from the place nextdoor, but Im not sure). If you like really good coffee, and youre in the area you definitely need to stop in. A fair warning to individuals, this place is pretty cyclist-centric/friendly. I didnt think much of it, but I could see it being a bit weird to a tourist not expecting it. I just think its a cool quirk for a cool place with an A+ cup of coffee.

Comment: Somehow their downtown shop doesnt seem to be run well (while I love the one on De la Vina). They were not prepared for the crowd hitting them today, on about the 4th regular Saturday after the ease of lockdown: huge line, then an even longer wait for the coffee, which one cant hear being called out in the noise, they have no baked goods left at 11am, and I never got the cookie I think I paid for, but cant check because I got no receipt...

Comment: I liked everything about this shop and the fact that they allow dogs inside or as in my experience going there. One thing I do not like is that they do not inform you were to heat your bread. Another thing is if you want for example cream cheese for a bagel you need to ask for it they dont not ask you for it but overall its a very good coffee shop to go since there is a lot of communication between people outside the store.

Comment: Such a cute name, I found this place through Yelp and wanted to try it out when we were in Santa Barbara. It was fun and exciting to see this since the name is called Handlebar. Comment: Coffee: good, but not the most-amazing-cup-ever kind of good Id expect from the glowing reviews I had read. Maybe there was an off bean in mine(is that a thing?)Almond croissant: really tasty, nice flaky texture, but maybe a tad greasier than I would have liked. Not too sweet, but sweet enough. Comment: The avocado toast was delicious, but the dirty chai latte and cold brew were far from enjoyable. Ive had many Dirty chais each with their own unique blend of spices. However, the chai from this place was not only lacking flavor, but had a spicy peppery finish that made it difficult to drink. I absolutely love cold brews, and always get them with no added creams so I can fully embrace the flavors. This cold brew fell flat and even had a very watered down taste. It was missing the velvety bold richness that other cold brews exhibit.

Comment: Update as of July 2019 - coffee and pastry are good, nice patio - but service is S-L-O-W. And its the cashiers, more than the baristas. And its not that the cashiers are working slow - but there is almost never more than one (unless you want non-expresso drinks). I left the place recently, with 6 or 8 people still in line in front of me - probably took 3 orders in the 5+ minutes I was there. Today was better, but only because the line was shorter.Original review:We dont go here often, but did stop in after the Saturday Farmers Market a few blocks away. Busy but not jammed pack. Great coffee: a hot latte for my wife, and an iced one for me, along with a scone to share. Sat outside and enjoyed the Santa Barbara vibe. Terrific!

Comment: A warm and welcoming coffee shop, feels like a place one can linger in. I stopped by on my way to San Diego and got my cappuccino to go, so didnt spend too much time in there. They have a cool espresso machine which it turns out is actually two machines combined into a custom shell. The coffee (of their own roast) was really smooth, but in some ways a bit too much in the background - the whole milk in my cappaccino seemed to suppress some of the coffee flavors. This is mostly personal preference, of course.

They roast all their own beans and offer a different style of coffee to try every day. I found the staff friendly and helpful - they explained the drinks well, recommended my serving glass, and even gave me samples to try. I had a cortado, which I don’t see everywhere. Comment: Cant understand complaints about price. An Americano for 3 dollars is OK. I had decaf which tasted good. Then hot chocolate which wasnt choclatey enough for me. The pastries (pain au chocolate and Almond Croissant) were good but not special. Staff are lovely and it has a great atmosphere. I had no problems with my orders and when I walked in it was busy. So maybe they have improved. No other food on offer except pastries/scones and a single sandwich offering. So dont come for breakfast if you want cooked food. Do come if you want to relax in a place with a great easy going atmosphere and enjoy a coffee. Have to say one of the servers was beautiful. Always helps to waken me up. Haha.

My only beef with them as I wish they were open evenings too but they close at 5 PM and if you bring your laptop here to work don’t expect to find any outlets they don’t want you to stay that long. It took several visits back to the counter over an hour for them to finally say that they think someone else took the order and the numbers are only for food (even though I asked them about that several times). They then rushed through our coffees which ended up pretty mediocre. Ended up being over an hour and a half visit for okay coffee... Unless they get it together soon dont bother spending the 20 minutes in line it takes to even order in the first place.

Comment: Great spot with a relaxed aesthetic. They have a good variety of beans and prepare great drinks. They also sell attractive mugs and other merchandise. The 4 star review is because, while its a great coffee shop, their roasts and preparations fall short in depth of flavor as compared to the coffee shops I love in my hometown of Ventura. The staff is friendly and I make a point of stopping here every time Im in Santa Barbara

Comment: Great coffee and loved the nitro. Pastries are great too. Not an enjoyable indoor atmosphere with everyone hanging out on laptops and not leaving any space for customers to enjoy their coffee and treats—three stars for that, five die the coffee!

Comment: A wonderful indie coffee house where youre likely to see the owners who care a lot about the product. Great outside patio shared with 3-pickles deli next door. A very popular destination with bicyclists, dont be surprised to arrive to find a peloton.

Comment: Clean, bike themed coffee shop with indoor/outdoor seating, I just wish the tables were a little bigger and the swag was cheaper. Ceramic mugs are twenty dollars. The staff is really nice, refreshing for a coffee shop, and the location is pleasant, downtown but no ones on top of you.

Comment: Yep – good coffee. Bagel with almond butter and jam is a hit too. (4/5 green stars)Busy place but service was fast and very friendly. When I asked about bagel toppings I was recommended to try their almond butter and strawberry jam. I was a bit skeptical, but on top of a savory everything bagel it turned out to be a very tasty combo. I was concerned that it might be a bit sickening, but no! They have a toaster on their counter so that you can toast to your own liking. Together with a latte it came to just over $7, which seems reasonable (especially considering the price of almond butter, and they give you a lot!) The latte was $4 (made with organic Strauss milk) and I thought it was very good. The bagel, almond butter and delicious strawberry jam was the highlight tho!I’m giving Handlebar Coffee 4/5 “green stars” for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons:• Coffee beans. It’s weird: almost everything that they stock (see below) comes from good suppliers. But when it comes to their very own beans, they have nothing to say! Nothing! No info on prices paid for green coffee, sustainability on farms, processing methods, shade cover. I looked everywhere.• Their dairy milk is from Strauss Organic.• A good selection of plant-based milks, including oat milk from Oatly (although that comes all the way from Sweden).• Almond milk is from Califia, one of the better commercial brands that I can see (e.g., water-use and bee-care).• Pastries (some vegan) from Renaud’s patisserie.• Bagels from I.V. bagels, which uses some organic ingredients.• Chocolate from Twenty Four Blackbirds and tea from Steven Smith.• Coffee cup lids, cold cups, straws, coffee bags, were not compostable.• My almond butter and jam came in plastic containers – would have preferred if they used ceramic pots or just placed it on my plate.Find out more about green-star ratings at Green Stars Project dot org.

Comment: First, I really do not smoke a cigarette, had a little emotional day, wanted to cheer up and went to this coffee shop. I smoked a cigarette outside of the coffee shop, coming from Texas i had no idea about the smoking law in CA. But this lady actually came up, asked me not to smoke here. I was surprised and embarrassed cuz i had no idea. But she went on like you can leave if you want, very passive aggressive way.She came back to me twice very aggressively. I felt horrible because personally i try to be the nicest person as possible, and I came up to talk to her nicely, but she went on and on. I politely apologized and i left.It was very disgraceful event, I still remember every words she said. But at least she shook my hand.In the end, always put your professionalism while you at work and doing your job, before getting into ask someone to leave or make their day even worse.I am not gonna lie, if you just want a great tasting coffee, i would highly recommend this place.

Comment: I wish I found this place sooner! Coffee is great, latte is delicious, and their croissant.. is amazing! I am very picky on croissant on the flakiness, the fluffiness, and how airy it is inside. I think I found my place in Santa Barbara.Highly recommended! They have wifi and outdoor seating if you want to enjoy fresh air or if you have dogs with you! Perfect coffee place for me!

Comment: Undeniably the best coffee in Santa Barbara. Their roast is a perfect balance of fruitiness and roasty-nuttiness. Great place to sit and people watch, but not ideal for studying/reading because the seating is sparse and a little cramped. Their pastries are fantastic as well, I love all their croissant varieties (particularly the almond), and their gluten free banana muffins are great (even for someone who doesnt go in for gluten-free stuff).

Comment: Nearly certain this is the best coffee in Santa Barbara. Smooth great tasting beverages crafted with care from an espresso machine made in the Netherlands (I asked—hopefully I recall the origin correctly.) Friendly cashier and a great, open air cafe, with outdoor and indoor seating. The front facade of the building has a really inviting look to it. A good stop as you visit the Santa Barbara Mission or the County Courthouse.

Comment: Funny how as a UCSB student, I had never gone here when it was so close by. But as an Alum, this place is the first place I stop by when I am back in town. The coffee is always dialed in very well and the location is in the heart of a very tourist laden area. There is plenty of seating, usually outside. My recommendation: Americano. Thanks for reading my review!

Comment: Things I like about it: friendly service with a smile, great tasting cappuccino, amazing almond croissants, free street parking and a nice cool and clean atmosphere. What I didnt like: n/aBest coffee shop was recommended to me by a relative. It was quite nice to visit cool and speak. I love the decor and friendliness of the staff. One suggestion is that they should look into getting cashew milk for their cappuccinos as its super creamy and delicious, way Superior than almond or soy milk. Other than that it made my morning quite happy :)

Comment: My husband and I road tripped down the central California coast in search of the best ice cream and coffee. In fact, we packed the rest of our food in a cooler so that we would feel free to purchase as much coffee and ice cream as we pleased. Of all of the coffee we found along our route, Handlebar was the best! We appreciated the dark, smooth espresso, and the carefully crafted lattes (e.g. milk was perfectly hot, vanilla was not too sweet) which showcased the coffee part of the coffee :) Know what I mean? ;) Aloha!

Comment: I love coffee and have been lucky enough to go on coffee tours through Melbourne and London and yet I think this was the best coffee I have ever had.We stopped by on a weekday morning and the cafe was filled with people so getting a seat can be a matter of patience but I assure you that it is worth it.They even have beans for you to take home which I was foolish enough to miss out on. If Im ever in the area again I will most certainly be back.

Comment: Excellent coffee and espresso, roasted on-site by the owners with a vintage Probat machine. Kombucha on tap from SLO-based Whalebird Kombucha. Pastries from local Flagstone Kitchen. Friendly staff, WiFi, indoor and outdoor seating, and friendly for kids, dogs, and cyclists. Across the street from the historic Presidio, and just one block from State Street.During certain times (Saturday/Sunday morning) there can be a wait of 15 minutes or more, as cyclists show up in groups.

Comment: Did a quick stop at handlebar before a road trip to Monterey. Though, I didnt offer any coffee, which is what they were known for, the pastries were great. Prices of the pasties are a bit high though (roughly $3-$4 per piece). The customer service was awesome. Super friendly people behind the counter. Definitely worth a visit if your in the Santa Barbara area.

Comment: This place has really grown on me as a new favorite place to hunker down and get some work done or just a place to meet up with friends. The atmosphere is lively, but not so loud that you cant concentrate to get things done. The baked goods selection is just right (they have gluten free options-hooray!) and the coffee and teas are spot on.And if you need a break from all that work youre doing on your laptop (heh), you can go next door to Three Pickles Deli for a bite to eat or wander a couple doors down to Cest Cheese, Panino, or Sojourners for lunch options. I love the historic neighborhood as it feels like its running at a slower pace and this little coffee spot is such a treat!

Comment: PSYCHED with the addition of Handlebar Coffee Roasters to Santa Barbara. A proper coffee shop with quite a bit of character and home-town feel was lacking in SB... until now. I dont like the term, but Im something of a coffee snob and these guys have their beans dialed. Ive had espresso and their regular coffee (brewed French press style) and theyre both amazing. Pretty tasty pastries also.Welcome to town guys!
