Comment: The owner of the establishment is very aggressive with his staff when small issues arise. I ordered a drink and it was made incorrectly and the way he spoke to his own employee was disgusting. Treat your employees with respect! The girl was more than happy to remake and there was never an issue between us until the manager got involved. I felt so bad for the worker and will probably never return to this place. I couldnt imagine what happens behind the scenes.

Comment: There was a super long line on a Saturday morning and everyone seemed excited to get their coffee. Luckily one of the employees came out and asked if anyone way in line for non espresso based drinks. I ordered a drip coffee and an earl grey tea. So I did not have to spend a lot of time waiting in line. I highly recommend to other people it is great coffee and I went on a hot girl walk afterwards because of the great location ! There have tasty looking pastries there but I did not get one.

Comment: Firstly, i usually really enjoy this coffee shop, but this is important. To the 50-something year old white man in the green scrubs who thought he had the right to physically try and move me out of line because he “didn’t realize I was there” when I had walked away for a second to put my things down, here is a little lesson:Generally speaking in the US, unwanted touching could be considered an assault, as can threat to injure; assuming it was intentional and a reasonable person would find it offensive.emphasis on the last line.people like this should not be served after this behavior. I appreciate the owner kindly hearing me out and showing care but this is unacceptable. it’s called a micro-aggression. lastly, to any old white man reading: this isn’t your world anymore so start having some respect ‼️

Comment: Was going knock them a point again but will leave as it is. Go for the coffe, not the snacks. Four shot Latte today, taste nice but makes me very sleepyEven the cookies, fantastic when they first appeared, are throw aways when I forget and order one. Very sweet, too sugary and not enough substance. Kids may like them better. Scones, so-so. Other sweet things available. Bagels are nice. Nothing savory offered other than a slice of cheese with a slice of ham in a croissant. I like the Morning Buns... but they are sweet!...........................Hopefully kitchen will reopen with fresh intersting selections soon and coffee return to amazing..........................Older review.Update: Love the food selection, yeah, the kitchen did open!!! Sandwiches, toasts, tarts, occasionally salads with fresh ingredients, farm fresh and great breads. Lotta of other yummy selections with an adaptive menu that changes with the season. Cant get bored here ❤️ Their bread pudding was amazing! Some staff changover but still delicious coffee!............................Consistently great coffee, excellent service and satisfying cappuccinos. Beautiful latte art. Hoping the kitchen will reopen soon, meanwhile baked goods are always good. They roast their own beans and have been offering an array of local gourmet goods from wines to honey and baking supplies. Can be a long lines and hard to find parking depending on the time and day, sometimes they run out of baked goods. But if you time it right the wait is quick and did I say I love their expresso drinks!Extra for oat milk or other alternative milks is something Id like to see phased out. You can get other additions for an extra fee but milks ought to be reflected in the basic cost.Nice ambiance, plenty of tables. And sweetly canine friendly!!!

Comment: Handlebar is known as THE coffee roaster and coffee shop of Santa Barbara. Their coffee and espresso are extremely smooth and enjoyable for any prepared drink. The baristas truly focus on one cup being made at a time and doing it right. While having an iced beverage in a paper cup is a bit icky since it gets soft and soggy, I imagine they do this to reduce the use of plastic. Im all about reducing waste and helping the planet so Ill deal with it. I love this original locations newly enlarged space that is hip and welcoming. Staff is very attentive to keep the almost expected line moving to lessen the wait. Best part is its location in the heart of Santa Barbaras Presidio with endless places to enjoy your drink and/or pastry outside.

Comment: Really good coffee, second to Dune in my opinion. Nice location. Lots of outdoor seating. decent amount of parking. Friendly staff. Very nice, involved and friendly owner. They couldnt make hot coffee if they tried, their lines are ridiculously long. They have a second register for drip coffee only. I mean 15 minutes in line for a latter is a bit much. Is the line intentional? the cashier staff doesnt hustle either. They are just on a very slow pace here. the music and vibe matches. If you have no where to be, its a great place. if you dont mind waiting a long time its a great place.

Comment: My new Coffee stop when I pass through Santa Barbara less than a mile off the 101. We had a long drive back to LA and this was just what we needed, great roasted coffee, the friendliest service in a historic building with a cool and open atmosphere. I couldn’t decide what to get, and the barista made the best recommendations. This business is locally owned and operated, you can see the pride they take and care about their community. I told them we like to see our friends who operate a restaurant near by, and they wanted to know where it was. What great people, you have to stop by and try this place!

Comment: Best roasted coffee in California.Their espresso is the best reason for visiting Santa Barbara but you can have their coffee beans shipped directly to your home. The ambiance is warm and inviting at this location and there is plenty of room to enjoy a meal and coffee with their delicious bakery selections (croissants were amazing). The roasting is done at this location so it is really special seeing the interior and smelling the aroma. All the staff here are extremely professional, warm and friendly. Two people are dedicated to making drinks at the espresso bar which is really rare. Visiting here is always memorable. If you are traveling along the coast it’s well worth a stop over for breakfast here. You won’t ever be able to feel satisfied with anything less than the superior quality of their special selection of roasted coffee beans once you’ve been here.

Comment: Had a bagel and a latteI judge a café firstly by the size of their cappuccino. There is only one size for a cappuccino. Handlebar gets it.The latte and bagel were excellent. The employees were nice and conversational, although that’s absolutely not required for a great café.I love that toasting your bagel is DIY—get it exactly the way you want it, and minimal inconvenience. Actually, it’s a pleasure. And the space: windows, brick, wood beams, nice seating.Couldn’t ask for more!

The staff is always really friendly, efficient and take a lot of pride in the quality and appearance of what they serve. The outdoor seating is great although hard to find a place to sit. Comment: I used to come here pretty much every day when I lived in Santa Barbara. The coffee is delicious and very consistent, everyone really knows what theyre doing. They roast everything in the building and Ill even buy their bagged coffee for the french press at home.Overall the building is quite spacious and very beautiful - they always play nice music and everyone is friendly. Its a great place to stay and do work or write or read, I always felt encouraged to stick around and relax. In general the vibes are strong here.

Comment: I wanted to like this place but there are a few issues. Most importantly - the cold brew is a little disgusting. I’ve had cold brew like this before. It’s not the worst but it’s not good. It has this weird taste, it’s hard to describe but it’s very bitter and maybe a little nutty. I know a place has nasty cold brew when I taste this, and this place has it but it is more on the subtle side compared to some I’ve had. I would only come back if they use a different coffee or technique - I’m really not sure what makes some people’s coffee have this taste. My other issue is I wish they could somehow removed their food menu from google, etc. I went here at the end of July 2021 to get food and they said their kitchen has been closed since COVID started. I guess they’re having a hard time hiring people? Cause it’s a bit surprising that’s still happening in July 2021.Bottom line - don’t drink their cold brew and definitely don’t come for food.

Comment: This seems like just another yuppie coffee shop, until you walk further into the room. Thats when you see and smell the roasting operation, then it starts to resemble a brewery as much as a coffee shop.My mocha was perfect, with flavors blending and dancing on the tongue. My companions cappuccino was good, but she said the chocolate croissant was only okay.Prices are about what youd expect, and the staff was friendly and energetic. If I lived closer I could see this place becoming a habit.

Comment: I have gone on journeys to find the perfect coffee in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Colombia, Australia, UK, France, the USA, Luxembourg, Germany. None of them beats what I just drunk at Handlebar in Santa Barbara. Each one is made to perfection with a roast that is just smooth in every direction. Not too acidic, not too bitter, just at the sweet spot between silk, nuts and toffee. Its literally the best coffee Ive tasted on my journey so far. Comment: 4/16/19. I am updating my review and downgrading a couple stars. The truth is now I like French Press coffee better. The 2nd issue that has become entirely problematic is not enough parking and too long lines (even in the middle of the day on a Thursday) for me to stop during or before work. I heard another girl online saying the same thing, that she cant go on days she works. The atmosphere is a great place to look good with your friends, if you can find a seat. Left the original review below.Hands down I LOVE it. My favorite coffee place since moving from LA. Staff always nice as if they really enjoy being that way. Lines can be long and parking limited during everyone’s prime time. During weekdays it’s a great place to work. Quiet and sunny

Comment: I think theres two items to order to accurately assess the brew-quality at a coffee joint: an espresso and the drip quality. Theres very few ways to obfuscate the quality of beans and the cleanliness of equipment through these brews. Handlebar has really really good drip! Its beautifully complex, beans are not overroasted, and goes down smoothly with the right amount of acidity. This is based on the two times Ive visited, once at their downtown location and another time here at their De La Vina location.A few words of note though: Both of my visits at both locations were met with pretty long lines (this was a Sunday morning, keep in mind). They could optimize their long lines by opening up more than one cashier. Also, this may not be the best place to study, if youre working on a computer: there arent any power outlets.

Comment: Best time to go is on the afternoon weekdays. Then you get to enjoy the full experience. Theres a reason why its really popular, and by coming off peak, youll get to know why this shop is a great place.

Comment: Great service. Super friendly staff. Amazing coffee! Definitely worth the visit. Only advice I’d give is find some sort of hanging tapestry or beads or facia to cover storage area with cardboard boxes. I get the warehouse look but it could be a nice artistic add-on. Anyway keep up the great work!!

Comment: Favorite coffee and cappuccino in SB. Pricy, and always packed, but still a weekly caffeinated treat. Ive been going there since opening day of their first location and the owners are great. Friendly, and passionate about what they do. Because of how busy both locations are, dont expect to have parking nearby.

Comment: Cool place. I like the coffee. Not the best place to study if your laptop is running out of battery since I could not spot any power outlets... Busy.

Comment: Super hypster coffee joint! Great coffee and snacks. I hope the excitement about its new location will die down at some point, so I can sit down and have a cup of coffee without a 20 minute line.

Comment: Its hard to get a good cup of coffee in Santa Barbara. Unfortunately this review is not about the coffee. The place was cool and the food was great. The staff was very friendly and thought of every detail. If they can bring this city great coffee, they would have more of a leg up. Dont get me wrong the coffee is not bad but its also not amazing.

Comment: A nice place to work. Im not much of a coffee person, but the iced tea was tasty. I do wish there were a few more tea options though. The place is huge, but a large proportion of it is unusable, as its dedicated to coffee roasting. That said, it is nice that its open and not walled off. The baristas were friendly and helpful, but slow.

Comment: First visit for me so I tried a few things. A large almond milk latte, avacodo toast, scone and a cookie. The toast was loaded with avacado, some aireloom tomatoes and sprouts, I think it had a drizzle of creme fraiche. The sourdough toast and goodies were delicious! The herbed scone was savory and fresh with great texture. The chocolate chip cookie had a light sprinkle of coarse salt and was one of the most delicious cookies Ive ever eaten! I could eat them E every day for life! The latte had great fresh roasted flavor, and the only reason I didnt give five stars is because they serve the latte in a tall glass. Glass is known to dissipate Heat so even though I drank it right after it was served it was already lukewarm and got cold very quickly. Call me old school the coffee should be served in a porcelain mug so it stays hot and fresh. I will definitely be a regular here and ask for my large mate in a to-go cup which will probably make a big difference.

Comment: Incredibly long wait in line that never moved. Arrived at 8am on Sunday, the 6 people in front of me in line were expected, but what we didn’t expect is for the cashier to talk with every customer for five minutes straight with a line of 15 people. 20 minutes later I had moved 3 feet, and we just gave up. Love this coffee, but I’m scared to go back with the single incredibly slow cashier. Second cashier please !

Comment: Great coffee, great space to work, but too small for the number of people that use it. A large section is dedicated to roasting the coffee and preparing the food. There is a cool stand up bar, but very few tables.

Comment: We loved the original Handlebar but the new one is even better. They’re making food to order with some grilled veggie salads and housemade baked goods now. My husband’s egg sandwich had scrambled eggs with romesco and he had avocado added. He said it was the best egg sandwich he’s ever had. The grilled broccoly was amazing with fresnos garlic and shaved lemon. The coffee and matcha is always off the hook. Best matcha in town.

Comment: Great service & coffee! Lucked out on a parking spot on Small Business Saturday. Could use more chairs outside as several small tables were available for us but the chairs had been moved to accommodate larger groups sitting together.

Comment: As a coffee lover and keen cyclist currently touring the West Coast from Canada, I was super excited to visit Handlebar. Id rented a road bike for the day and had just come down from Gibraltar Rd. I asked nicely if I could find a spot inside to keep the very very expensive bike for 30 mins (I couldnt carry a lock) and the staff were very grumpy about it, bordering on rude. It was just really disappointing as this is a place branding itself around cycling but their attitude was the opposite of the friendliness and generosity Ive experienced from the cycling community during my last 2 months on the road. That said, its a nice space and the coffee was good.

Comment: Kim and Aaron have created and consciously grown their coffee roasting business into two of the best places in town for your coffee pleasures. I love the look of the De La Vina location, with a parking lot as well. Delicious coffee, wonderful baristas, congenial atmosphere, community seating, it is all wonderful.

Comment: Great coffee in a nice atmosphere. Personally I disagree with the best coffee in Santa Barbara meme, but you should go and decide for yourself.
