Comment: I used to come here *everyday* for over 4 years. Then, they replaced their cold brew (which was the best in town) with flash brew. If they bring it back Ill change this review back to five stars.Note: Cold brew is coffee that is *brewed cold* over a longer period of time. Flash brew is brewed hot and then flash cooled, or in other words just iced coffee.

Comment: We did not like the taste of Dunes coffee (Oat Decaf and regular Oat Cappuccino) here very much. Not sure why, but the taste was just not for us. While the place itself and the service are nice, we prefer other coffee places in SB.

Comment: One of several locations in the area. I often find Dune’s coffees more interesting than traditional coffee shops. Not only do they offer a wide variety of packaged coffee, but they also brew many of their varieties in both espresso and non-espresso drinks. If you want to mix up your coffee game a little, and are willing to try something different this is probably a good choice. Of course, they also have your traditional dark roast espresso coffee as well; ZipZinger is a great option along those lines. As with most other coffee shops in the area, there are selection of baked items available as well as some other food options.

Comment: Why do coffee shops need to play loud music? Its not a rhetorical question. My take is that they want to move customers in, through, and on. This is the reason for the 2 stars on the atmosphere. The drink was good, the staff was very engaging. Then why push us on? Why not let us have a conversation with friends? Go there and see for yourself. Maybe that was a one-off, and they usually play their music at a low level. On the other hand, I encourage them to go to Europe and discover how music is nearly non-existent in restaurants and coffee shops. They understand the purpose of gathering. Once again, Santa Barbara fails.

Comment: This was my 1st time visiting Dune, I was visiting from another state, staff was extremely friendly, nice, and very helping. I could not decide what I wanted so they recommended the Almond Croissant and a cappuccino. Both were phenomenal. The croissant was so good I had to order another. Def will be returning when I head back to Santa Barbara.

Comment: Dune Coffee Roasters have very good espresso. Admittedly that is judging from a single visit to a single store, but Im looking forward to another visit. I loved the attention to detail and the references to the Dune literature found around the shop and on the merch. Speaking of merch, theirs is worth a stop if you like hats and shirts and things. Top notch designs for a coffee shop.

Comment: Beautiful creamy coffee! Love the latte art. The only reason to give 4 stars instead of 5 is because the coffee was a bit acidic and bitter for my taste. But the coffee has the most beautiful texture. Friendly staff, timely service. Overall, an enjoyable macchiato

Comment: A darn good cortado and cup of coffee. Beautiful space, friendly baristas. I stumbled upon this place actually walking to another coffee shop. I’m from out of town and love exploring the local shops in a new place, but often stick to what I know. The skateboard on the wall intrigued me, the pastry case piqued my interested so I gave it a go. The cortado was to sit and enjoy with my bagel and the coffee was for the road. A winning combination. I look forward to more visits to this space.

It was soapy and bitter. I couldn’t taste the espresso at all :(Matcha was ok, I wish I had gotten extra matcha because it tasted amazing! but the milk watered it down too much.Pastries were baller. Comment: I have been a supporter of Dune Coffee since it was The French Press and they shared their state street location with another business. This week the two times I was in I was discriminated against by the staff because of a couple of T-shirts I have worn.My T-shirts did not promote discrimination against any religion, race or gender, or orientation.however in order to understand it you’d either have to be in the service or a veteran.I have worn these shirts a number of times while purchasing coffee and not once had it bothered anyone,My shirts are from a Veteran owned business which I support because I am a Veteran myself. I choose to support Dune coffee because I believe in supporting local and small businesses.Up until till now Dune coffee had had excellent customer service, with a sad heart I will no longer support Dune Coffee because it seems that they do not support Veterans. As a veteran I fought overseas so we can have the freedom to be able to Think with an open mind So that we can as a whole stick together regardless of Religion, Race, or Sexual Orientation, I fought so that even if we don’t agree with one another we can be able to Live and Let Live.

Comment: This used to be one of my favorite coffee shops in Santa Barbara with the best lattes in town. But they removed ALL the outlets, making it extremely inconvenient to study there. They do this so people will not stay there long. Isn’t that the purpose of a coffee shop? I’m incredibly disappointed. What a shame. Instead of The French Press, go somewhere else that supports college students and their long hours.

Comment: The name thats written above the door, hanging quaintly from a rod iron pole: The French Press. The name thats displayed on the glass entryway, boldy painted on the wall inside, and the name of their website: Dune Coffee. The history of how these two names refer to the same place is a baffling story of intrigue, mystery, and back-stabbing. Its a study in feudal society, noble houses, and one Paul Atreides. --If youre an astute science fiction reader, you already know Im no longer talking about the coffee shop, but about Frank Herberts novel that obviously inspired this enterprise. If you arent, you should pick up a copy of Dune and head over to The French Press to read it.In all seriousness, when you visit, you should take a moment and ask the barista why the place seems to have two names. It should lead you to a fun conversation, but we wont spoil the results here.-------------ATMOSPHEREIt feels like stepping into a desert. Its dry, sandy, a wasteland of a place. Water is in short supply, but it is made notable for being the single source in the known universe for Melange, a spice known to extend life and aid in interstellar travel. No, wait. Thats a Dune reference again. If we want to talk about the State Street location of this fine coffee roaster: Its a quaint, relaxing, not terribly quiet location. Plenty of chairs and tables line the narrow hallway to the back, opening up to a small outside patio. Theres also an outdoor sitting area in the front, ideal for people watching. Contrary to the first paragraph in this section, water is not hard to find inside the French Press, rather its available to dispense yourself from an iced container. The location is suited for a quick espresso, as well as spending an hour or two working on your latest novel (science fiction recommended) or checking those work emails._____________COFFEE 4.5/5Dune declares that their mission is source the absolute best coffee, roast it with attention and care, and hand it over for you to enjoy. They claim to be in constant search of better and better coffee. Their passion comes through in the taste and smell of the coffee offerings, and the friendliness of the employees. The coffee is roasted in Santa Barbara (but not at the State St location)OTHER OFFERINGSTheres a small selection of pastries, but the main focus here is on the coffee. If you want food, we highly recommend walking across State Street and visiting Andersens.____________________WORKABILITY/DATE PLACE 4/5If you are used to making a small workspace footprint, you can camp out on one of the wall tables for as long as you need. Free wifi is available. You also need to have a great work ethic and ability to stay focused, lest the temptation to people watch on State Street becomes too tempting. This place feels like a fantastic one for having a good conversation, feeling cozy in a public area, and discussing the fashion choices of everyone that walks by.We obviously recommend that you drop the next time you visit Santa Barbara.(This post was also posted on our blog: http://coffeehouselovers.com/2018/09/08/visit-arrakis/ )

Comment: Was in Santa Barbara for a weekend and was in dire need of good coffee. When venturing to a new spot I always like to try something the barista suggests. I ended up with a shakerato. A what you say? Its a shot of espresso, simple syrup, with ice shaken. Great during a hot day. Not a drink that will last you though if you are the type to sip on your drink for a long time. Its a shot of espresso that comes in a teeny cappuccino cup. But it has enough flavor and kick to get you started.

Comment: Rude, rude and rude. The owner that I spoke with was very rude on the phone and she expressly told me that the coffee is $2.65 a cup because thats how much it costs them. They couldnt give a small warm up refill to me without charging me another $1.40; so what is it $2.65 for couple or a $1.40 for a cup, what does it cost them. So I would say despite a bad review and losing customers theyd still rather charge $2.65, and be completely rude about it.
