Comment: Cafe Bakery is the place for cha shu bao pork buns. Flavorful, lean and not overly sweet. Until discovering here, I was getting to dislike cha shu bow over the years. But now, we pick up a bunch whenever in the neighborhood for friends and families. Many who does not care for cha shu bow may not have ate a good one. We got lucky.

Comment: I only discovered this restaurant because my mom brought a to-go order home. It was a Baked Chicken with Portuguese Sauce that left such an impression that I had to bookmark and visit in person. We managed to stop in on a Saturday night, just before closing time at 8:00PM. The place was packed but we were able to get seated with 30 minutes to spare. Its a no frills restaurant with traditional Hong Kong cafe options. Most meals come with soup, veggies, rice, AND dessert! Each dish is not 10/10 crazy good but it will surely leave you satisfied.

Comment: They serve traditional and authentic HK food here! I had ox tongue in tomato source with spaghetti noodle, which was exactly how I’d like it! Super delish and really fix my craving for HK style food! The service was very prompt, attentive and friendly! They brought my milk tea and soup within seconds and my entree was followed minutes later! The restaurant is very clean, although the decor is bit dated (but expected)!

Comment: Definitely come for their daily specials! All their food is very well portioned and plentiful. I appreciate the kind customer service and I always find this place as one of the locals spots. There is street parking available, along with metered parking closer to the restaurant. Also it is solo dining friendly when it’s not busy. It tends to be on the quieter side when it’s not busy which is perfect to enjoy a delicious meal.

Comment: Cozy little restaurant with a set daily special or you can order from their regular menu.Food is good. Most of it is Chinese American comfort food.Prices are reasonable but a bit more expensive after the pandemic. Its still worth it.Soup, main course, vegetable, rice or spaghetti, choice of beverage and dessert. My favorite is their roast pork and it is available on Sunday.Other recommendations are listed elsewhere. There are so many choices to choose from.

Comment: Ordered the baked chicken steak with white sauce over rice (see image). Piping hot and full of cheesy, saucy goodness. The only downside was that the chicken was oversalted. (Pro-tip: they can make it with any type of sauce on top of your order even if it isnt explicitly listed on the menu.)Also tried the ox-tongue with tomato sauce and spaghetti. The ox-tongue was amazingly tender, a must-try! The sauce was very sweet and I would recommend a different choice unless you have a sweeter palette. Both orders started off with tomato soup appetizer which hit the spot and started the meal off on the right note.Ordered HK milk tea on the side. The tea is strong as expected and comes standard with sugar/artificial sweetener packets and unlimited refills. ☕ Jello was for dessert as usual but doesnt come topped with creamer anymore. Not too sweet, just right. The aunties serving us were very accommodating and kept our drinks topped off.

Comment: We got here around 1pm and it was quite busy. We got a seat right away. We got the Sat special salt baked chicken thighs and a regular menu oxtail stew. We both opted for just more veggies and trust us, the amount of meat for both dishes will fill you up alone. Oxtail stew was absolutely delicious. I will come back here just for that dish. The chicken thighs were so tender and the skin was crispy. The milk tea was bomb and it is bottomless with any special order. We are definitely coming back for more.

Comment: So first of all ordering is difficult...the menu is actually hard to find; the link on their web page is not available. I included a photos of the take out menu.Ordering and pickup is easy... just finding parking is a bit hard though since Noriega is a busy street. When you order to go, you get the soup, but no dessert or drink. We ordered and I was able to taste most of the dishes:Beef Tongue with Mushroom sauce: overall the tongue were thick cut and pretty tender. Good flavor. The mushroom sauce was more towards brown gravy with sliced mushrooms tossed in (I found a bay leaf and a slice mushroom) so, I actually think they might make the gravy from scratch.Garlic Pork chops... I did not taste this dish, but note its breaded pork chops top with fried garlicChicken a la King: creamy, and al dente spaghetti. The cubed chicken was tender. The only thing I did not like was the large pieces of celery. The sauce was creamy, but I think a little more pepper would be needed, but that is me. I added it and it really popped the flavor.Chicken Steak with Mushroom sauce: juicy dark meat. The chicken was really good, it tasked grilled, but I did not see any grill lines.Fillet of Sole with Mushroom Sauce: OK on menu it shows it in English as grilled but the Chinese has it as pan fried. Pan fried is correct. The flour needed to be seasoned, but the it did not mask the taste of the fish. The fish flavor is very mild, so that is a good thing. They did serve the mushroom sauce on the side, which is a plus so the fish did not get mushy. Thumbs up for that.Baked Pork Chop with White Sauce: this is yummy breaded pork chops on top of fried rice then covered with a creamy white sauce, topped with cheese then finished in the broiler/salamander. Its hard to mess up breaded pork chop... they did a good job with this dish. Each of the takeout meals came with steamed kernel corn broccoli. It also came with some soup. The soup is a bit salty, it taste like a tomato based (read watery catchup) with cabbage added.

Comment: Came here because of how packed it was. We asked a few of the other customers and everyone was raving about the portuguese chicken rice. *which is actually my go-to-order at HK Cafes* so I decided to get that. Super stoked to be getting PCR at a place which is specifically known for it.... and the disappointment I got after it arrived.PCR has a fried rice on the bottom and is then topped with a Chicken-coconut curry and baked in the oven. The fried rice on the bottom was rather sad and was just rice mixed with frozen veggies. (no egg or anything). The curry on top also left a lot to be desired. Maybe Im spoiled with my go-to HK cafe, but the curry only had chicken and potatoes - no onions, peppers, or anything else.I think I may have just been over-hyped for the food, I was about to go lower but on further thought, average makes more sense as a rating.tl;dr: didnt hate it, but better/cheaper places in east Bay.

When they asked me what kind of the drink you want, my father ordered the meal which is included the coffee without charge but my meal is not included and I only find out I have to pa on the bill. End up, a small coffee they overcharged me $4.75 which is insane. Starbucks only charge $2 something! I’m very unhappy about the way they do the business which is like hidden charge!!!! I won’t go there again! Plus, the price is not worth the food! 👎👎👎👎👎

I think if you get milk tea and you want it sweetened you gotta ask for condensed milk (not 100% sure on that, but you know, try it) best thing to get is their pork chop with pepper sauce. also anything with tomato sauce is gonna be kinda sweet. the borscht soup is amazing I was so cold and it warmed me right up and it was delish.

Comment: Cafe Bakerys indoor dining room reopened earlier this summer. They check both vaccine card and matching ID. I had their Sept. Tuesday special, baked seafood spaghetti $15. The specials menu rotates every month. It came with a complementary borsch soup, milk tea and jello. I didnt care for the soup or the jello. I did love the milk tea and refills. The sweet and spicy wings $11 werent bad. It had a thick sweet sauce with dried chili peppers over the crunchy, deep fried, six pieces of drumsticks and wings. They werent hot at all. I should have gotten their other Tuesday special instead, the pork cutlet. The other patrons mostly all ordered the cutlet. Service was excellent and Im glad they are reopened again for indoor dining.

They have good daily specials that come with soup, drink, and dessert. I absolutely love the red tomato pasta sauce on their spaghetti sides (its sweeter than marinara) and their daily soups are always delicious. Their buns are the SOFTEST and so delicious when you dip it in the soup. I also like their grass jelly drink that comes with vanilla ice cream, otherwise the classic Hong Kong milk tea also hits the spot. Huge portions and very affordable prices.

Main dishes are served over rice or pasta and include salad/soup, bread, dessert, and a hot/cold drink. Its definitely Western food prepared in a Chinese style. Seating is simple, but fills up incredibly quickly - so get there early. When we left, there was a substantial line

Comment: This place is my childhood favorite. The menu hasnt really changed and they still have a pretty good variety of stuff. I usually get their baked seafood or chicken steak. You can get the meal with rice or pasta. It also comes with a bread, soup or salad, and jello. They also have daily specials that come with a coffee or milk tea. While I really like their food, service can be pretty bad. Ive had to check on our orders on multiple visits. Sometimes it can be difficult to get someone. The restaurant itself is pretty big. Parking is so difficult here and it can get really crowded during peak times. I try to come later to avoid the crowds and have better parking.

Comment: Soup (or salad) and fresh, hot buns served with entrees. We ordered the baked pork chop over tomato sauce and baked seafood.I preferred the pork chop; fried and cooked well. The sauce was fairly sweeter than expected but still tasty! Baked seafood had good mix of fresh tasting seafood (squid, mussels, shrimp, scallops)... but the béchamel was heavier than Arnold.

Comment: This is an American restaurant Chinese style. Comfort food to the max. Their Chicken special will knock your socks off. Two big pieces of chicken plus lots of veggies and they start out with sweet bread they have unlimited milk tea and even dessert. Plenty to bring home for the next day. That was what the wife got but I got the baked Seafood. Oh my God. Big bowl full of rice covered with vegetables and Squid and scallops and shrimp and oysters or were those muscles? Smothered in cheese and baked crispy in the oven.So incredibly good. Ill bet I gain several pounds. Anyway this place is actually kind of non fancy joint but they pack them in and they really know how to provide excellent service. Also a lot of the items on the daily menu board High ticket Seafood items extraordinaire. Worth the experience check it out.

Comment: Great place, my dad grew up in Hong Kong, but has been living on the East Coast for the past 40 years. He came to visit me here in the Bay Area, and had mentioned wanting to eat Western food cooked Hong Kong Style thru the whole trip. Searched for hours to no avail, but I knew this year had really Hong Kong style restaurants and stumbled upon this restaurant. This was EXACTLY what he had been looking for, and really made my dads day to eat the food he grew up.

Comment: CAFE BAKERY (next door to restaurant) - excellent pork steamed buns! got pork steamed buns from chinatown earlier in the day... they were so fatty and so sweet, i couldnt eat the whole bun. pork steamed buns from cafe bakery were soooo much better.... chunks of pork, very little fat, asian flavores bbq sauce which was savory and sweet. the beef pastry is also excellent... savory, spicey, slightly curry. mushroom pastry was also really good but i liked the other 2 better. the pastry texture was as flakey as croissants and super buttery. planning on ordering a few dozen to take to tahoe next week.

Comment: Hong Kong style western food like baked pork chops in Portuguese sauce (really a kind of Malaysian coconut curry sauce), stewed ox tail with rice or braised ox tongue in tomato sauce with spaghetti. Sometimes they will have specials like breaded veal cutlet with mushroom sauce or salt and pepper chicken leg with Cantonese style ginger and onion sauce. Great with a warm cup of Hong Kong style milk tea or a glass of chilled Ovaltine.

Comment: I come here at least 2-3 times a month to have their daily special. The specials generally change every month with the exception of the special for Friday-Sunday. Those are consistently the same. The special comes with an entree, choice of milk tea/coffee (I always get the milk tea), a soup/salad (I always get the soup), some bread/butter, and jello for dessert. The portions are large for me and I usually end up taking half of my meal to eat later.I like the food, but the service can be a little slow. This place is also cash-only.Edit: as of June 2017 they will add $0.25 for take out boxes.

Comment: This Asian with a French flair bakery is fantabulous. Their pastry are delicious. Their pork buns rock. Its not what one would consider inexpensive, but its worth the price. One can find a cheaper and decent pork bun across the street about half a block down, but they are not quite the same. The old adage, you get what you pay for, may apply here. The neighborhood is pleasant to walk around. We live in Pacifica, and its nice to occasionally drive to neighborhoods like these in the City.

Comment: Had dinner here last night, and I was reminded of how much I like this place. I always love the buns they give you before your meal. Theyre usually so pillowy and fluffy with the perfect sweet glaze on top. Unfortunately, last night the buns were drier than normal, which kind of sucked. I hope it was just a fluke.Heres a list of some of the things that I like getting:Fried Chicken Wings - Seasoned well, juicy (greasy), and flavorful. I could order these as a meal even though its just an appetizer. The portion sizes are very generous.House Special Fried Rice - Fried rice with XO Sauce, chicken, and shrimp. I dont like how they put the frozen vegetable medley (peas, carrots, and corn) in the fried rice, but the other ingredients are solid. The chicken is tender, and the shrimp has a smooth, firm bite. They do a pretty good job with searing the rice to impart wok hei, and XO Sauce is always deliciously savory and sweet. Sometimes, it could use more XO Sauce, though.Anything with Curry/Portuguese sauce - I think their curry is pretty flavorful. It has a good spice component, and you can taste the anise that gives it a Chinese flair. Curry Beef Brisket is the special on Fridays, and Chicken with Portuguese Sauce is on Sundays. The preparation and quality are definitely multiple steps above ABC.Milk Tea - They provide bottomless milk tea with the specials, and its a relatively good HK style milk tea. It could be richer and creamier, but the black tea flavor is smooth. Theres an underlying malty character thats brightened and balanced with just a slight hint of floral flavors. It also comes unsweetened so you can add as much sugar as you want. Its not always consistent since theyre pretty loose with pouring the evaporated milk, but its way better than the milk tea from other places around here (Teaway, TPumps, Quickly, etc.).

Comment: Their cake is superb! I guess they make a subtle hint that theyre a bakery first and a restaurant second (Cafe BAKERY & Restaurant). I was with a friend in the Sunset area when mom called and asked me to get a birthday cake for my grandpa. Before I could even ask for suggestions, my friend and his parents were telling me strawberry cake from Cafe Bakery. Its inexpensive and a good, simple cake. Its not the first time Ive heard good things about their cakes so I figured, why not?So I walk in and see a rotating display of maybe five cakes of all sorts of sizes, worried that Ill be stuck with these limited choices. In Cantonese, I asked the lady worker what flavors they had. She told me only chocolate or strawberry today. Then she started asking what cake I wanted. I told her 8 inch, strawberry, and to have it say happy birthday, gonggong. She chuckled, corrected my Chinese grammar (its gonggong, happy birthday), and told me itll be ready in 30 minutes. YAY! That means I get a custom cake, woohoo! When I go back to my friends place to kill time, they seemed surprised that I get a fresh cake. Well, 30 minutes seems a bit quick for a cake to be fresh so who knows.I come back to pick up the cake and it was only $17! Like, WHAT? And the best part is that when it was time to eat it, wow! It was delicious. Its so soft and fluffy. Not overly sweet. In between the sponge cakes is a layer of strawberry bits and cream. Such a simple thing to add and thats all you really need. My grandpa, sister and I all had a second slice because it was so good. Just thinking about it now has stirred a craving in me...As for the food, it wasnt memorable. Quite literally... I dont remember what I ordered the one time I was here for dinner. I just remember there being veggies, soup, dinner rolls, and jello with every meal. Until next time I come back to try the food... or maybe Ill just be back for cake.

Comment: On the bakery side the char siu bao (baked BBQ pork buns) are hands down the very best in the city. They are chock full of BBQ pork chunks with a lot less gooey, sweet filler youll find in lesser bakeries. The Chinese fam swears by these baked goodies. My obsession with these buns have kept me from trying much else.Other notes: Parking is easier on this section of Noriega than further down. The staff is nicer than bakeries or nearby dim sum shops (Im looking at you Booming Dim Sum).

Comment: This is a great inexpensive restaurant with a lame name! They have all kinds of cuisine prepared in Hong Kong style. We got garlic chicken steak with pasta and oxtail. Came with a small cup of tomato soup (surprisingly pleasant) and jello for desert. Tasted great especially the meat. The sides were the weakest part but still good. The place got packed and clearly a lot of Asians support it with their business.

Comment: There are many variations of Chinese food throughout the San Francisco culinary landscape. However, there are only so few sprinklings that can be considered Hong Kong style cafe food. I consider Cafe Bakery & Restaurant one of them. This is a gem in the Outer Sunset district of San Francisco. There are daily specials for every day of the week. There is no place else that can offer milk tea, borscht soup, dinner bun, baked seafood rice, and jello dessert as a delicious meal.Perhaps one can be surprised by this melting pot of a meal, but it is this mix of food cultures that intertwines to define itself as Hong Kong style cafe. This is as close as you can get without traveling to Hong Kong. Try it and you may be hooked.
