Comment: We finally got the chance to come here. We got here at a good time, between 1045-11am. Right before lunch rush. The line wasnt too long, but long enough for us to be able to order lunch. Pastries until 1pm, lunch starts at 1130. We ordered the melon bread, fruit danish, Japanese sausage roll, strawberry croissant. For lunch, We ordered the katsu chicken with rice and the sandwich combo with fried shrimp sandwich with half fries and half salad. We took Pastries to go, but tried the melon bread and small bites of the other Pastries while we waited. Everything was fresh and delicious. Just the right amount of sweetness.Lunch was just as good. The shrimp sandwich filled me just eating half. The truffle fries were also good. My kids enjoyed the chicken katsu.Having been to Tokyo in December 2023, it was hard not to compare. This place delivers on freshness and taste. It is just good to see some diversity in downtown San Diego. We will definitely be back to try drinks and more pastries.

Comment: This bakery and a cafe is pretty nice. The inside is very trendy and well organized.I stopped in for some baked goods, but unfortunately, they do not offer anything made from whole wheat or multi-grain, which was disappointing, to say the least. Dont get me wrong, all the baked goods and pastries looked amazing, but not for what I was looking for. I do hope they add some more wholesome items to the menu containing multigrain or wheat.I settled for a small chocolate chip scone and an iced coffee with oat milk. The scone was very good and had that perfect scone texture and great flavor. The iced was okay, however. It definitely needed more oat milk in the mix. They barely gave it a splash. They use Cafe Moto, so expect some strong coffee, too; hence, the reason why my iced coffee needed more oat milk. The staff members were friendly enough. They seemed rushed, given the line out the door. They need to work out a better system because the line does move rather slow. One person taking orders isnt going to cut it.

Comment: Higher tier 85 degrees bakery.decided to try out the round croissant to remind myself of the one i tried at the lafayette bakery in nyc(delicious!).got there 930, waited 30 min to get inside and to my surprise, they were already out of the round croissant. huge bummer and surprise to know that they only have handful of their main item. People ahead and behind me were also highly disappointed.i got five different pastries of what was left and it was good. nothing mind blowing but good. i’m sure they could’ve made the same pastries using the flour purchases from Sysco and not ship it from Hokkaido as stated on website.Huge disappointment with operation. looking at the website, i went thinking that the bakery was operated by a japanese owner, but i don’t think it is. i’ve been to many japanese operated bakeries/cafe and they spend significant time and effort on aesthetics, but this place uses generic plastic bag for to-go items and has a huge mcdonald’s “thank you” trash bin inside a bakery lol. i’m not saying these are bad, but imo, it doesn’t match the vibe that the bakery is going for.lastly, recommend the bakery to implement “no laptop” policy. there were people using laptop and hogging tables when there are people waiting to sit and eat.

Comment: I saw Asa bakery for the first time before arriving San Diego. My family and I were craving some Japanese pastries and breads so we decided to visit not knowing how packed it gets on a weekend. They do have notices outside informing customers of limitations and hours, which are good things to know! The pastries/breads we got were very soft. We got the melon pan, anpan, and one of their Naruto croissants. I recommend if you are taking it home, reheat for a minute or two in your toaster oven. The pastries were very well presented as well. All in all, it wasnt “incredible”, but it tastes good enough for me to come back to try the other items.

Comment: Went on a weekday.. first time trying the bakery section since opened due to volume and lines. Large selection. I feel the prices are very competitive and the space feels lively. The gal working the counter was super sweet. I only tried a few sweets this time. I read that the French toast was a must so I tried it first. It’s like a lightly sweetened cheesecake type vibe. The strawberry croissant rolls are smaller than French bakeries but the price reflects it. Everything looks clean and well made; would definitely go back to try some savory items.

Comment: Got here right at 9am. Like was already out the door and took 35-40 mins to ever make it up to the counter. There is a 4 pastry maximum order and they do not serve cafe food like their curry and didnt have Naruto rolls available until 11am. The pastries here are amazing though. They match the hype. The amount of layers and bubbles, the matcha cream, the curry pan... are all AMAZING. When I need my Japanese baked goods fix and want better quality than Mitsuwa and am willing to wait-- this is where you HAVE to go. The quality is unmatched!

Comment: The food is delicious, but beware of the line during rush hour! I wish they wouldnt let people work on their computers during the lunch rush, especially if they take up a whole table to themselves as people were pretty much fighting to find seats.I cant recommend the sandos enough, especially with the side salad and fries!

Comment: Nice vibe and atmosphere in this place. A little walk but close enough to the gaslamp quarter.Had the bow tie looking croissant and the biscoff croissant wheel. Really tasty! The croissant had a nice crunch outside and inside was flaky and softService was nice and quick and asa can get super busy as it was already packed on a Friday at 1:30pm. But even then, people helping were super friendly and with the amount of delicious looking options, nice and patient. The place has some really great aesthetics with a lot of archway shelving adding some depth to the architecture of the placeLots of windows as well making for a nice, bright and airy feel.Didn’t notice much in terms of parking, but looks more like street parking for this bakery / cafeGreat job overall!

Comment: - I arrived at this place on a Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and there was a waiting line of around 45 people. In time it was more or less an hour.- I ordered chicken katsu sando, shrimp katsu sando, fruits danish and coffee.- As for the taste of the food, I will tell you that it is average. I loved nothing enough to return.- It is a familiar and pleasant place.- Suitable for children.- They have indoor and outdoor tables with umbrellas.- They have wifi with a good signal.- They only accept credit and debit cards as an additional payment method to cash.- If you have reduced mobility and/or are in a wheelchair, I tell you that access and mobility within the place is highly difficult. The space between the tables is limited.- The place was visibly clean, except for the area where the trash cans are.- The attention was good.- The service is slow.- You have to look for parking in the surrounding area. In front of the place, on the street you can park, it is a gray strip.- They are pet friendly.- Ill share a photo with you with the schedules they operate.- I also share a photo with some recommendations that the establishment itself makes.

Comment: Went on a weekend they had a long line. Ordered a lot of the things I would highly recommend their baked goods every single thing I tried was perfect and fresh. The croissants were flaky. The bread had nice crumb. Their milk flavor ice cream was really rich in flavor. The Chicken Katsu curry was alright but filling. Hojicha Latte was okayish. They had decent amount of seating. I would recommend getting the baked stuff here worth the wait.

Comment: Went here on a Sunday morning and expected the wait, especially since this is such a trendy place. Got in line at 10:07 and got to the cashier at 10:55, meaning close to an hour just in line for ready-made things. The food is good, but the wait is too long for the kind of food you’re getting. The problem seems to be that they haven’t streamlined the system, and only had one person working each position, and only one cash register. The person helping behind the counter was also pretty slow moving and seemingly unconcerned with the line, and the cashier was having a separate conversation while helping me. I don’t want to blame the service for the experience, but I think the whole system could be streamlined in a way that makes more sense. I’ve been to bakeries with similar if not higher demand (Izola, for example), and they have takeout and preorder systems that really work, especially for customers who are only getting premade things and heading out, as was my case this morning. Overall, go here on a weekday. The food is worth it if you can get it straight away — as you would at any other high-end bakery.

Comment: Quite disappointed. Planned appropriately to stop on my visit before my flight back home. Second in line before opening excited to try their curry pan and mochi bagel. Neither were available. The guy said they normally don’t bring them out until 10:30. The website does not warn of this like they do for the Naruto crossiants.Baguette and melon pan textures were good. Flavors okay. Barely tasted any melon in the melon pan. Banana custard crossiant was just okay. Also, soft serve was meh.

Despite the long line and a 40-minute wait, every second was worth it. The flavors were exceptional. If you find yourself around the area while theyre open and the line isnt too long, definitely stop by and try one of their amazing selection of baked goods.

I get to the front of the line after waiting 25 minutes I order and get to register and am told they are cashless I didnt see any sign on the front door. Was a bummer. Second time in I order a couple different bakery items and a sandwich and some ice cream for my kid while we waited 20 minutes for the sandwich to be made. The ice cream was refreshing and different. The bake items I took home to consume I wasnt thrilled it was dry overpriced and overhyped.

Comment: Most of the pastry was just mid. That said, no matter which you get, they are all overpriced. Because of price, I wouldnt return. Expect $7 per pastry. The best bread was the Naruto rolls, but they were limited to 1 per person. Otherwise, everything else here, I honestly couldnt recommend this place over 85, Tous Les Jour, or Paris Baguette, considering things are just about equally good there at at least half the price of Asa.Drinks were very mid. Hokkaido ice cream was also just okay. The consistency of the ice cream had too much water to make consistency similar to buffet ice cream machine. Cone is also store bought tasting.Hayashi rice was good but very overpriced.

Comment: It is very overcrowded for the place to only have 10 tables. Half of the tables are taken by college students doing their homework, which is totally fine, it’s a cafe. Just that it leaves only five available tables plus the lil bar table they have at the corner. There was live music, which was pretty cool. The bread, drinks, and sandwiches we got were average. I got there few mins before 9am and there was already a line. Finally got to place an order about half an hour later. They were out of a lot of pastries while i was ordering and they brought new items out after i already paid! So disappointing! They dont’t have Naruto roll today so i guess it’s the weekend special thing? Another disappointment!Their pastries are good but not great to wait over 1/2hour in line in my opinion. French toast is what we love the most.Oh and their coffee taste awful. If you’re a coffee person. I recommend get coffee somewhere else before visiting this place! We won’t be coming back….

Comment: Pastries? 10/10 I got their melon and cream pan, and it was to DIE FOR. They were so delicious, I just wish I ordered those. I can tell this place is super popular though because those were among the few pastries left when we arrived. The bakery shelves were BARE. But they are constantly baking more food, I was telling my friends I wished they said FRESH BREAD when new baked goods came out so I could go and get them immediately. The other food though was really just okay. I probably wont order the other stuff again. I didnt really like the chicken katsu with the sauce. The sauce was just okay, not like a curry sauce I was expecting and the katsu was DRY ):. The matcha boba was also just okay. The brown sugar boba was very average. Also they took a really long time to bring out our food, even as my friends who ordered right before us seemed to get their quickly... As for ambiance? Apparently this place is very popular and there is very little seating as people come here to study from nearby universities, and seem to be there all day.... Parking was also a pain as it was all street parking, so it was hard to find a place to park. I do want to come back and try their omakase sushi speakeasy. Sounds $$$$, but the outside just made me want to come in.

Comment: Title: Delightful Culinary Experience at ASA Bakery-ASA Bakery is a delightful culinary haven with an array of scrumptious food and baked goods. The ambiance is perfect for socializing and capturing beautiful food or drink moments. However, I wouldnt recommend it as a study spot or meeting venue due to the lively conversations. The spacious layout with tables for two is ideal for intimate gatherings. The seating, including those by the window, offers a pleasant view to complement your drink and food. While the bakery is Japanese-themed, the menu is diverse, featuring amazing sweets. I thoroughly enjoyed a hot latte, a sweet dessert, and a curry bun – all delicious choices! Also, a cashless spot DONT FORGET YOUR DEBIT CARD 🥲🤭

Comment: No cash! Credit cards, apple pay, and Google pay accepted.Came for the pastries and was not disappointed. They were just the right amount of sweetness. Nothing was too overpowering with sugar. The Custard Cream Bun was the unexpected favorite of the four (4) pastires my table split. The bun was light, fluffy, and a perfect balance of sweet & savory. Id have eaten this pastry even without the cream filling.NOTES:• the Naruto pastries sell out by 12 noon! They will not make more after selling out.• they do not offer vegan or gluten free pastries.I ordered the (hot) Macha with almond milk ($.50 extra for almond, oat, soy). I love that it was not presweetened so that I could add whatever I needed to it.Lots of seats indoors and several tables outside. You still may end up having a hard time finding a spot to sit. The high ceilings and natural light are a real treat to the interior feel. They do have free wifi.

Comment: A cute lil place on the corner of 14th st & Market st. A long line out the door with about 30 people in front of me & my friends at 9:08am (the exact time I got there) on a Sunday. Our wait time was about 40 mins.We went there in hopes to try their beef hayashi rice dish and truffle fries, but didnt get a chance to because lunch doesnt start till 11:30am.So we ended up getting a melon pan, an anpan, a chocolate danish, a fruit danish, a curry pan, a custard choco crunch, a custard cream pan, a matcha croissant and a creamy caviar roll.Everything was good. But out of everything we got, the best thing I ate there was the curry pan and creamy caviar roll. Those are the 2 things I would get again if I were to go back, but itll be during lunch.

Comment: Went twice, both times lackluster service… bakery items were great but the beef Hayashi quality was inconsistent, rice was sticky in chunks, egg on top of the rice was folded like a folded towel instead of the tornado style and the drinks Sakura latte & royal milk tea were just sweet with syrup like flavoring. Very good ood stuff-egg sando, shokupan toast. Not worth the parking hassle.

Comment: Went at 1-2 pm so the place was packed. Service was great and the enployees seemed to like being there + friendly. We ordered the french toast and the orange chocolate croissant they were both very good. The only downside was the coffee and this is coming from a daily coffee drinker. It was bad. My gf is more picky than me and she said it tasted like cigarettes. I laughed took a sip and she was kinda right.

Comment: I’m editing my review. I realize that this place could really do better. I would like a real plate and real coffee cup if I’m eating there or at least have the option to. Also their bathroom takes you into the kitchen and next to the office and when you go back there, you see what kind of mess they have. My imagination runs wild thinking about how sanitary they prepare the food. 🤢

Comment: Great bakery for a morning baked good and coffee or latte. Bread is made fresh and sold as they come out of the oven. They sell bread from 9am to 1pm or until sold out. The lunch special is from 11:30am to 3:00pm with a large portions and great flavors. This bakery is cashless and only takes debit/credit cards or Android/Apple pay. There is limited seating so it may be difficult to find seating for large parties but couples and small families, are usually able to find a place to sit either inside or outside on the patio. There is usually a short wait in the morning, usually less than 10 mins. Its preferable to come on weekdays due to there being a long wait line on the weekends.Still this is a place I see myself coming to on days when I want a good bread or lunch and an easygoing atmosphere and decent prices.

We were able to find a table and there were only a handful of people in line.Everything looked so beautiful and they were delicious too. We ordered a variety of lunch items and pastries. I love the beef curry bun, fruit danish, French toast, shrimp sando, and chicken katsu hayashi rice with omelet.Parking was a little hard to find. We ended up parking about 3 blocks away.

Comment: Walked in about 830 and most of the things were sold out. But that’s not why I’m leaving a three star review. As we walked in, the workers didn’t greet us in anyway, and we were standing there and they just completely ignored us. one worker walk to the kitchen as we’re standing there and the other girl was just at the register, not saying a word and looking at us. so we just asked if this was all they had and she just responded with “yeah”. so we just walked out. The place looks great, but their customer service needs to change!

Comment: This Japanese cafe took me back to Japan for their breads and pastries but not the service. I’m just used to Japanese customer service when in a Japanese store. The female staff here looks bored especially the cashier. The place was packed when I went so I ordered hayashi rice “to go”. I found an available seat while waiting for my order so I asked them that I will just dined in. Minutes later, I still got the hayashi rice in “to go” box. For the supreme croissant, they should not put it on top of the glass display. I see people resting their arms there while waiting for their turn to order and I find it very unsanitary.

Comment: I’ve been wanting to make the trip to ASA for a while, and I really was pleased. We came on a Tuesday around 10:30 and there was a line, but they still had a few pastries of almost all varieties. We tried the sausage bun, curry pan, berry danish, sweet potato pastry, and Naruto croissant. We all agreed the Naruto croissant was the best, but other favorites were the curry pan and sausage bun. All were really high quality and I would recommend for if you want unique pastries. Thank you!

Comment: Def recommend trying this bakery. The pastries were delicious, and the drinks were great! I was here on a weekday morning, so there was plenty of parking in downtown. I had to pay for the meter though. There were plenty of tables inside, but there was also outdoor seating. The line wasnt long, but they did look busy. Many people just tried the baked goods, but they did have a lunch menu with sandwiches. The croissant rolls were so good. The strawberry was my favorite. The matcha one was pretty good too. Visiting this place made me miss Tokyo.Pro tip: get the croquette. It was so good!!

Comment: I usually call them before I go to this place to see if theyre busy or not. For instance, on a weekday, theyre not as busy as the weekend. If you drive here, you will have to park at the meters and you must arrive early because its downtown. For the meter, its 25 cents for 30 minutes. I was in line for 20 minutes on a Saturday, so youre going to at least put more than a quarter. Especially when you plan to eat there. I had mine to go, and I spent 30 minutes in total for waiting in line and ordering my drink and pastries.FYI, you can only have 4 pastries per person.Yet, they charged me for 5 pastries. Hopefully, they can adjust this mistake when I go back. The place has limited capacity. Not for dining in for more than 10 people. Unless you guys are the first 10 people. They have tables for 2-4 people, and they also have a high top bar.About the food, its good. I ordered red bean bun, Naruto Matcha, Fruits Danish and Chocolate Orange Croissant, and matcha latte. My favorite is the Naruto Matcha. It has custard filling inside, and it was baked perfectly. Next time I go, Ill order the chocolate and strawberry. My matcha latte with almond milk was also good.I plan to come back to dine in with friends next time.

Comment: We love Japanese style pastries so we were so excited when we heard about Asa Bakery. We got there around 11:30 AM and there was already a long line, but thankfully it went fast. We only had to wait for 20 minutes. We tried the Naruto strawberry croissant, as well as the chocolate and orange peel croissant. The strawberry one was packed with flavor and custard, but it was not overly sweet. Unfortunately, the chocolate croissant was a bit burnt and only had a mild chocolate flavor to it.If you’re in the area we would still recommend trying this place out!

Comment: I don’t live in San Diego anymore but this bakery has been on my list to go to and will return again. My family and I went on a Saturday and stood in line before they open at 9am. A bakery like this is worth waiting for. We got a variety of pastries and drinks and none of them disappointed! Even pastries we had leftover from yesterday were so fluffy and tasty the next day! The Sakura latte was so fragrant and delicious, living in DC for 6 years it felt like I was next to the Cherry blossoms again. The place is so chic and comforting. They really did a great job and transformed East Village with the new addition on the block.

Comment: The moment you step into Asa Bakery, youre welcomed by an inviting, cozy atmosphere that sets the stage for a relaxing and enjoyable visit. The bakerys warm ambiance, combined with the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked goods, instantly lifts your spirits. The Curry Pan was the first to capture my attention and taste buds. This delightful pastry is a brilliant fusion of Japanese and Indian flavors, wrapped in a perfectly flaky and golden crust. The filling, a savory and mildly spiced curry, was rich and satisfying, with tender chunks of vegetables and meat that provided a hearty texture. Each bite offered a burst of flavors that was both comforting and exotic, making it difficult to resist a second helping.Accompanying the Curry Pan was their Milk Tea, a simple yet elegantly crafted beverage that stood out in its own right. The tea had a robust, full-bodied flavor, with just the right amount of sweetness, and was perfectly balanced with the creaminess of the milk. It was soothing and refreshing, providing a delightful contrast to the savory Curry Pan. The Milk Tea was smooth and well-brewed, demonstrating Asa Bakerys commitment to quality in even the simplest of offerings. The staff at Asa Bakery deserves a special mention for their friendly and attentive service, enhancing the overall experience with their hospitality.

Comment: My favorite drink was the Matcha latte! The Matcha was of exceptional quality – rich and earthy, with a subtle natural sweetness and a hint of bitterness that is the hallmark of well-prepared matcha. Equally impressive was the Shrimp Katsu Sando. This sandwich was a masterpiece, featuring succulent shrimp encased in a golden, crunchy panko crust, complemented by a subtly spiced sauce. The shrimp were cooked flawlessly, maintaining a tender and moist interior that contrasted wonderfully with the crispy exterior. Highly recommended!

Comment: I had a wonderful and delightful experience at Asa Bakery! I really like the Melon Pan. The sweet bread, with its crisp, cookie-like crust and soft, fluffy interior, was a perfect balance of textures, and each bite released a subtle sweetness. The sausage roll was juicy and flavorful, leaving me both satisfied and longing for more. For lunch, I indulged in the Beef Hayashi Rice, a dish that was both comforting and rich in flavor. The beef was tender and succulent, simmered to perfection in a thick, savory sauce that was a complex blend of sweetness and umami. To complement my meal, I chose the Matcha Latte, which was really good! The staff were friendly and attentive, ensuring that every aspect of my visit was enjoyable. Its a must-visit for anyone in the area!

Comment: It was a busy Saturday morning and there was already a line of about 20 people when we got there at 9am. The pastries looked beautiful and we were excited. The curry pan was tasty with a good meat to bread ratio but it was baked and I prefer fried curry pan. The sweet potato crunch was absolutely beautiful but the filling was a little heavy on the orange peel flavor and I felt it overwhelmed the sweet potato flavor. The ham and corn pastry was my favorite of the day, simple but comforting flavors of childhood, and super soft bread!

Comment: ASA Bakery is a wonderful Japanese bakery in downtown SD, great for a coffee and pastry, getting some work done, or lunch with friends.ASA’s counter features a wide variety of baked goods including fruit danishes, macadamia pies, and everything mochi bagels. I enjoyed the Caramel Ribbon Croissant — a light flaky pastry filled with a thick, decadent caramel custard. The lunch and dinner menu is small and simplistic. It has a few sandos, a few rice plates, a salad, and fries. I personally tried the Chicken Katsu Sando and it was delicious! Between two thick slices of Shokupan (Japanese milk bread made in-house), was crispy, perfectly cooked fried chicken, cabbage, and sauce.

I went back today to give it a second chance tried a custard chocolate filled pastry, threw it away after 2 bites just couldn’t taste anything asides slightly burnt pastry. I ordered a latte and literally watched the lady fill it with 80% milk. I tried it anyway just in case I missed something and lo and behold yep just milk. I only asked for the refund for the latte because I’m not paying $7 for a glass of milk. Save urself some $ it’s not worth the hype.

Comment: Pastry heaven!Must haves:- Naruto croissant -- limit 1 per person. That should tell you how popular this thing is. There are 3 variants: chocolate, matcha, strawberry. Theyre essentially the same, theyre all croissants with custard filling, just dipped in different coatings.- Caviar roll -- its a thin baguette with caviar spread. Nice savory snack.Drinks:Sakura latte -- cherry latte. Such a unique drink! I have never seen a cherry latte anywhere else before. The taste of cherry is gentle, yet full and not artificial. The warmth of the milk perfectly hugs the cherry flavor and dances on your tongue.I want to come back to try so many other pastries! Comment: ASA Bakery, inspired by Nagoyas kissaten culture, offers a diverse menu of coffee, matcha, and a tempting array of Japanese bread and pastries.Despite a lengthy wait during our Veterans holiday visit, the savory delights like the curry ban, ribbon croissant, and potato croissant proved worth the hour-long queue. Though the selection was limited by the time we reached the counter, the items we chose were reminiscent of the authentic flavors found in Japan. The matcha latte, complemented by smooth ice tea, was a standout. While prices remained reasonable at less than $5 per croissant, the service, albeit good, did suffer from a slow pace. Overall, ASA Bakery provided a taste of Japans culinary charm, making the wait worthwhile for those seeking an authentic experience in the heart of San Diegos East Village.

Uncomfortable hot! They serve everything in cardboard to go boxes and plastic cups. It was so uncomfortable to have 5 huge boxes in a tiny table to eat them off of. Wish they had real cutlery. Comment: The staff of superfriendly. They kind of had a rush when we arrived, and they handled it beautifully. I loved the variety of baked goods to choose from. I wanted them all. Im excited to return and try the next few items. The egg sandwich is fantastic and highly recommended.

Comment: The atmosphere of this store is quiet and somber. The seats and tables are naturally made of high quality materials. You can buy everyday and unique Japanese bakery items including boba tea. I ordered strawberry danish, melon bread, and curry bread, and they were perfect! (although I didnt mind the melon bread pattern (#)).On top of that, the staff is very friendly (my job is from the government DEIA, so I wonder if there are more black and older people working here). When I spoke to him, the Japanese staff member explained the Nagoya origin of the restaurant and informed me about the omakase sushi restaurant and Demon Slayer-style bar next door. He was quite kind. I would definitely come back with friends. The atmosphere of this shop is both quiet and trendy. The seats and tables utilize natural and high quality materials. Traditional and unique Japanese bakery items also include boba tea. I ordered a strawberry danish, melon bread and curry bread; it was perfect! ( though I didnt notice the usual melon bread pattern (#))On top of that the staff was really nice and helpful (As my job is a government diversity specialist, I do wonder about the number black and elderly employees). I spoke with a Japanese employee who explained to me the stores Nagoya origin and that there is also a makass sushi restaurant and Demon Slayer-styled bar on the side She was very kind. Ill definitely visit again with my friends.

The flavors are a perfect blend of traditional and innovative, offering something for everyone’s taste preferences. The presentation and attention to detail make each item a work of art. Comment: Nice new place with tasty pastries and refreshing drinks. Little bit pricey but at least it is good. Good place to relax, work, or study. They have a secret room? People were coming in and asking sushi. A worker pressed a button and an automatic door opened and it looked like a little restaurant. Different, right. They sell out of a lot of items fast. I came late but still found a delicious melon pan. This might be a work in progress but good so far. I recommend trying it out.Just figured it out. It is called Kamon . Hidden! People are calling it a speakeasy . Cool concept, will have to try that part out.

Comment: Their Everything Mochi Bagel is hands down 10/5. Every bite was so soft and flavorful. Im usually a cream cheese girl, like have cream cheese with a side of bagel. But this mochi bagel was so good I ate the whole thing on its own.We got the iced royal milk tea with soy milk. It was pretty good! 4/5.We came for lunch. And lunch to be honest was a 3/5.We ordered the Chicken Katsu Sando and the Beef Hayashi Rice. The chicken Katsu itself was pretty dry and didnt have any taste. Most of the flavor came from the sauce, which did taste good, except the strong horseradish flavor. There was a bit too much cabbage for the lack of flavor. If the Katsu was really heavy then yeah putting more cabbage makes sense. The Beef Hayashi was decent. Flavor was exactly what I expected. I love that they give so much in one serving. Makes it worth the price. The biggest issue for me was that the beef was way too tough.I feel like these issues can be fixed with little tweaks. So I will definitely be coming back. Mainly for that mochi bagel tho.

Comment: Found a parking was easy but getting inside took an hour due to the popularity.I got a melon pan, croissant, and sausage pan. (3pc MAX per person on Friday & Saturday). I ordered a hojicha latte with oatmilk and matcha & hokkaido milk soft serve were very good. Especially I was so thirsty and hungry after waiting outside on hot day. It was sorta visiting the bakery. I really wished I could get a curry pan would have made my day better but I will make a plan to visit there again.Staffs were busy helping customers.

Comment: I liked the place, so an average 4 out of 5.But I do believe that the hype is more than the actual place and food. There are some cool type croisant or rather pastries.Service is ok. Not very personal, but more quick serve and move on attitude.Batista I experienced was not friendly, and didnt really make a good cappuccino. No, cortado, or flat white but just the basic coffee types. It was clean and nice vibe. Its mostly busy and people queue up so bear that in mind if you plan to visit.

Comment: There has been much buzz about this Japanese Bakery that I had to try it. It did not disappoint. I came in and had the Chicken Katsu Sando and a Hojicha Latte. Both were excellent. Bread was amazing, the sando had so much flavor. The Hojicha Latte, roasted green tea, brilliant! The atmosphere is excellent with service to match. Im very excited about this bakery. Next Ill be here bright and early to try the pastries, which put them on the map. I have my aim on the Cheese Danish. I almost forgot to mention this company has an omakase, Sushi Gaga, and a cocktail lounge, Kamon, in the same location. Both arent obvious and are hidden. Ill be making reservations soon for both. Too many excellent things happening here at ASA Bakery.

Comment: The Sakura Latte is sooo good. The workers are friendly and the food is great. We tried the egg sando and the shrimp sando and they were so juicy and the bread so soft. The portions for the rice bowls are big. I also loved their Milk Hokkido ice cream and even though I dont like bagels the mochi bagels are now my fave. 10/10 recommend.

Comment: Came in and was greeted as well as given a recommendation of Sakura Latte which was amazing! Unfortunately I came around 630 pm and it seemed like all the pastries were gone. I got a walnut cream cheese roll to go with my Sakura latte and only thing I would change is having the roll warmed up, other wise 5star experience. I look forward to bringing my friends

Comment: The pastries were amazing and coffee/tea was so good. I ordered iced green tea with boba and my friend had a mocha. We both sat in for around an hour and despite the 30-45 minutes to find parking and fresh wiffs of piss on the sidewalks outside like every down town area.. def walk with pepper spray type of down town… is it a place I would go out of my way for? Probably not. Just for the sake of it being down town to be honest. It was pretty busy and they had plenty of options for pastries so it seems pretty popular!

Comment: Really bad first experience. I stopped by today around 3 pm to try a sando and matcha. The cafe was not full at all and i waited over 30 mins for my takeout order. I tried to politely ask for a refund because I need to leave but they kept telling me the items were being packaged which still took about 10 mins. Food was sadly disappointing the katsu sandwich had a weird horseradish taste and matcha was bland. Will not be coming back here and do not recommend this cafe.

Comment: Came here twice, motivated to arrive early enough where I get a chance to pick some baked good before they sell out.I’m pretty new to SD but I’ve lived in NYC and Seattle (where there are plenty of great bakeries to choose from) and I love baked goods and pastries, so I consider myself pretty picky. I will drive out of my way to a bakery rather than walk to a one nearby, if it’s worth it. And I do just that - drive to Asa bakery from North Park. The pastries here do not disappoint. I’m actually surprised at some people’s reviews here but it seems that most are bitter about items being sold out or the limit on how many pastries you can buy - both of those things speak of demand being higher than supply, which in turn says more about the quality of their products than any words of frustration or bitterness from unsatisfied customers. The spot is just couple of months old and the owners must’ve not anticipated being popular and growing this quickly, but they’re working on that as well.I’ve had the hojicha latte, chocolate croissants, fruit danish, curry bread/bun… and honestly I’d come here every other day if I were burning the calories fast enough.

Comment: Update. I went back and bought the cherry blossom drink (Sakura latte) and it was good. I couldnt try a pastry because they sell out early every morning. I didnt stay inside long because it was crowded and loud.Ill probably change the rating if I get the chance to try it. The first time I went, I only had cash on me and they only take card. The next time I went when they were supposed to be open but they were closed. Ill try one more time and see if it was worth it.

Comment: Beautiful cafe with great service! We got there too late (around 1-2PM) to enjoy their pastries but we were able to enjoy their sandos which were delicious! The sakura latte was interesting and tasty, but the matcha latte was a bit too grainy and sweet for me. I would come back to try the pastries if I were in the area early enough.

Comment: I love this place. The decor is beautiful and the service efficient and the pastries delicious. 4/5 only because the lines are so long I think the service lacks in giving great one on one time to explain what items are/have in them due to them trying to keep the line moving. They have so many things I’ve never seen or heard of and have been going by once a week to try something new.

Comment: Excellent bakery. Loved every single bite of the pastries we got. Long line and so worth for the wait. I read a lot of negative comments below, and I wanted to say, I understand were in America, but it is the owners right to open up a bakery Japanese style or whatever culture or style.. If you dont like they serve from 9 to 11, then go somewhere that offer pastries all day long. Understand, this isnt that type of bakery. You get to choose 3 pastries, you get to eat from 9 to 11, and after that you get to have lunch. Even some of the fast food places stop serving breakfast after a certain hour. Why are you so bitter about the fact they dont serve you pastries at whatever time you want it? Be open-minded to a different type of bakery. I hope Asa Bakery becomes successful! Good for you for having your unique concept of baking. 🙌

Comment: Over baked and burnt pastries. Only thing that worth trying - mochi bagel, good taste and soft chewy texture. Also they sell only 3 pastry per person in case you want to grab for someone else it might be a problem.I think they forget that they’re in America with the concept they’re trying to bring in, while Japanese people used to have their pastries only by 11 am - this won’t work here and will only disappoint and get people angry.

Comment: The atmosphere is great very aesthetically pleasing. I came for the “ Nautro croissant” it was a huge disappointment. I choose the chocolate topped one and was expecting it to be light buttery and flaky like a standard croissant which it was not. The chocolate it very dense on top and you cannot bite into it. The croissant taste old and it’s not light or buttery the filling didn’t have much flavor. Over all I wouldn’t recommend this item to any one. Parking is difficult and the line moves slow.

Comment: 3/5 visits I encounter bad service and mistakes on my order. The first time the cashier overcharged me while training new staff. The second time, I was the only customer in the shop, and somehow, they managed to forget to give my Melonpan 🤦‍♂️. The third time, I waited almost 40 min to get a cup of coffee, and I stepped on loose stool screw that was on the floor When I let the manager know about the loose screw, they laughed and said they were looking for that loose piece a night before. Lastly, I tried to provide feedback to improve the long wait and long lines, and they told me to go grab coffee across the street at Seahorse Coffee. I am a 14-year veteran in this industry. I just wanted to provide feedback, but it was not received well. Not returning anytime soon 👎🏽

Comment: If you have the bakery open until 9.30pm then why do you only sell pastries for the first two hours? Please bake another batch or make enough to meet demand or close at 10.30am when your bakery items run out.We get that you are creating an illusion of demand. But all good bakeries in San Diego make enough to serve atleast more than half of the day.Disappointed.

Comment: I was looking forward to check out this new bakery/cafe. Finally, we managed to make it on time for pastries before they run out on our second attempt. The store was nice, but when we got there at 8:15 on Tuesday they didn’t have that many pastries to choose from, not because they were sold out, they just didn’t have them! The pastries are definitely good and they look nice but not worthy of 5-stars in my opinion. The strawberry croissant roll was creative and unique but the chocolate croissant was overcooked.I’ll go back in a week or two to try again and will adjust my review if necessary.

Comment: I got there at 9am (an hr after opening), the line wasn’t toooo bad, but still very long. About 20 min later, they started handing out coupons for drinks bc we likely weren’t going to be able to get pastries. 30 min after that, I got in and did end up getting 2 pastries (a fruit tart & mini chocolate croissant). They were mediocre, and I was kinda disappointed bc I didn’t get to try any of the stuff they showed a lot on ig. Imo it was not worth the wait, but it might be if you line up before opening time... The staff seemed ok, although I went here once before in the evening and they seemed ruder. Most people were there with friends or family/children and small dog, ie very high/upper-middle class vibes. I wanted to mention this bc I went l alone and I’m a college student… who went there dressed like a college student… and I did not feel like I was in the right place lol.

Comment: I went twice in one day, at 9am and at 1pm. Both times were a bit of a mess with different teams of people working. Which obviously means there is a huge management issue. Things that I was told would become available later in the day were gone or never made, despite having the sign for them in the case. Employee’s don’t know what all the different pastries are and have no idea what the kitchen is doing. The morning team was a lot less friendlier than the afternoon team. One employee pretty much made you feel like a huge burden on her for placing an order.Other than the experience, everything else was great. All the pastries and food were good. Pastries lean more french than Japanese but I’m not complaining. Drinks were mediocre. Atmosphere of the shop is nice and does feel a little bit like a Japanese cafe.I want to support but probably won’t be back for a while. Hopefully they’re able to sort themselves out in the future.

Comment: I visited the bakery today with high hopes of enjoying their curry pan in the afternoon, as I was told. Unfortunately, my excitement quickly turned into disappointment when I learned that there was none available. Its evident that the staff needs more training in managing their inventory and communicating accurate information to customers. Additionally, they should work on gauging the demand and ensuring they have enough baked goods on hand, especially when theres a line out the door. Improved preparation and service are needed to meet customer expectations.

Comment: Keep in mind that if you come after 10:00 am, you are unlikely to get good tasty pastries, you will have to choose from what is left. And yes, cash is not accepted here, which can also be disappointing((You also won’t be able to order a sandwich, even if you are very hungry, it is served after 11:30, also disappointing((and yes, if you ordered a hot drink, they will prepare a cold one for you and without admitting their guilt, they will simply say that they will make someone else, but the fact that you wasted time is your problem, you should have taken what they brought!))

Comment: The line forms in front of the display case and theres no menu for pastries, so you cant see whats available until you get to the front. Then you can order a drink from the one tiny menu when you get to the register. 10 minutes later you get your coffee. Incredibly inefficient. It took me over 20 minutes to get pastries and coffee with only 3 people in front of me in line

Comment: This is a new, Japanese style bakery. “Asa” is Japanese for “morning”. I always appreciate it when a new Japanese restaurant is opened in San Diego, and I always hope it’s good. This new bakery is okay. It’s not excellent, but it’s not bad. It’s okay.I’m not sure if they make their bread offering in house or not, but it is not so much a “Japanese” style bakery. Japanese style breads tend to be very flavorful and not too sweet. The breads here are very sweet - maybe they were made for the American taste, which tends to lean towards very sweet. The coffee was excellent though! If you happen to be walking by, I’d maybe come here. But this is not really a bakery I’d go out of my way to come to.What is interesting is a hidden “speakeasy” behind a hidden door. Haven’t been there yet, but it will be fun next time…
