Comment: Love this place. I come here at least once a week to do some work and have a cup or two of coffee. Their beans are phenomenal and strong tasting and you can see how they process them in the facility. Staff is wonderful and take special care of making your drinks with the fancy hearts and flowers etc.

Their coffee was yummy and creamy, the chai was sweet and spicy, and the almond croissant was perfect. I really loved it and will definitely be coming back. The only issue was it full of people studying so there weren’t too many empty places to sit.

Comment: Enjoyed the drink my husband brought home before, but discovered on my most recent visit that they keep all their milk at room temperature on the counter, which is not safe. It was not particularly busy, so its not like they were going through gallons an hour. They clearly picked up milk from the counter to make my drink, put it back there when they were done, and went back to other tasks. Makes me wonder how good their other food safety training is.

Comment: Great coffee, but the staff/management clearly don’t care about the customer experience. They consistently close hours earlier on a regular basis - Closed at 2pm (3hrs early) on a weekday once, and 4pm (2hrs early) on a Sunday once (see image below).When they do close, you get to enjoy them blasting a song called “Closing Time” at an uncomfortably loud volume, making everyone in the place cringe.Totally get it that the business is now closed, but the fact that they are so liberal with their hours of operation, and inconsiderate with their communication, makes people want to choose other options for that $8 iced matcha….

The cold brew had the perfect balance of sweet and saltiness. Also, Ive had a lot of vanilla lattes at different coffee shops, and this one is my favorite so far. The drink had a sweet and unique vanilla flavor.

Comment: Let me state up front a 4 rating from me signals a high quality establishment - and this is one. My wife and I ordered a cortado (great) and cappuccino (good) from a professional young man who described in detail the beans used for their espresso and exact number of ounces milk added to cortado, cappuccino and caffe latte. The coffees arrived quickly at great temperature. The cream and foam pour were OK but nothing special. A curated selection of beans from their roastery is available, with other patrons purchasing products freely. The inside is industrial roastery-chic (my coined term), clean, with several high tables where customers chatted freely in a pleasant ambiance. The only downside is that we had visited CoRo 30 minutes earlier for 2 world class lattes which excelled in every key area including the ability to sit outside in the morning sun. You won’t be disappointed at Artis, and if milder coffee is your thing, you may even be delighted. It’s just that you’ll be blown away at CoRo which is 3 minutes away - see my review and pix.

Comment: I visited on a cloudy Saturday morning around noon and the cafe was not busy. I absolutely loved both the chicken pepperjack piroshki and vanilla oat milk latte (with house-made vanilla syrup). The indoor and patio spaces are large with plenty of places to sit, and they play music quietly inside. Great place to grab coffee and catch up with friends or work for a while.

Comment: Avoid their $10 lattes! I ordered an oat half-caf latte, which came out to $10 after tax and a dollar tip. 6.50 for the latte, $1 for oat milk, and (without warning) $1.50 for half caf. They explained that they charge $1.50 for half caf because they have to pour extra shots and throw them away. When I asked for those extra shots as a separate espresso, they said no. Unfriendly and outrageously expensive. Definitely not returning.

Comment: If youre a coffee lover, you wont want to miss this spot. The coffee is delicious, and the spacious, rustic industrial ambiance is a great place to enjoy it. While the seating could be more plentiful and comfortable, the overall vibe is still inviting. With some improved interior design, this coffee shop could be the ultimate cozy hangout spot. Nevertheless, its definitely worth checking out for the quality of their coffee alone.

Comment: I love this cafe. It’s a great space, with really friendly staff and good drinks. Unfortunately I’ve had to stop going here since they raised their prices this month. My regular 16oz matcha latte that used to cost $4.50 is now $7. I simply can’t justify that cost, so I’ve had to start looking for other cafes to spend my time. I understand inflation is bad, and I support raising their prices if it would benefit their workers, but that’s a serious price jump from what it once was. I’m really hoping management reconsiders these new prices and puts them at a more reasonable rate. Until then, I unfortunately won’t be back.

I love getting the cold brew coffee here.The environment is incredibly modern and with a hipster vibe. However, I took issue today with your wifi connectivity which made me lost about 45 minutes of much needed studying / work. Nice staff recommended two solutions which didnt solve the problem but his efforts were appreciated, but I ultimately had to leave. Peets Coffee down the block was full so I walked to Catahoula Cafe about a 1/4 mile away which had both excellent Wifi and ample workspace.

I don’t mind paying top dollar for the coffee and ambience, however one should be able to work from a laptop without getting kicked off every 5 minutes. This is the only coffee shop in Berkeley where I experience issues. Addiitonally, the last 5 lattes I received were luke warm at best. Really an unenjoyable experience for a $6 cup of coffee. Ask for it extra hot. Really want to like this place, but this issues should be addresed as you are paying top dollar for the experience.

They switched to these awful metal filters for pour overs that leave a disgusting sediment in the cup. It doesnt even extract properly as the holes are way too big and it drains fast. For a while Ive been able to ask for my pour over in a V60 with paper filter but today I was told they got rid of all their V60s and refused to make me a pour over with a paper filter. I was left with a gross sediment filled coffee that tasted ALL wrong.They also switched to these hipster looking paper bags that your coffee will go bad in much much faster than their older style thick bags with inner aluminum linings (yes, they changed bags a while ago but it was a horrible decision. The new bags breathe way too much)

Comment: My first impression of Artis was that it’s spacious, light-filled, and welcoming. It has a great laid back atmosphere and friendly staff. There’s nicely spaced out indoor and outdoor seating. The music is mellow but good and not too loud. It’s on the edge of the fourth street area but it doesn’t feel overrun by rich folk and it’s not overly hipster either. There was a good mix of people and the staff seemed to make everyone feel welcome.Overall I’m giving Artis 4/5 “normal” stars for quality/price/experience but only 2/5 “green” stars for their social and environmental impact.First, the coffee and overall experience… I had a flat white ($3.50), which was small, only around 5 or 6 oz, and not as velvety as other flat whites, but it was good overall. The coffee was strong and well balanced. I also had a savory scone (cheese and corn) which I think was $3. The scone was good and their other pastries look tasty too – but it is a small selection. Good sandwiches (like Blue Bottle) or any kind of savory food menu would be welcome. A downside for me was that the WiFi networks only worked very briefly for me – it was pretty frustrating.It was around $20 per lb for most of their coffees and you can have them roasted to order in their big “popcorn poppers”. Watching them being roasted on site is fun but I wasn’t temped to buy any. Their coffees have no formal certifications (Organic or Fair Trade, etc.) and when I asked the staff about it they were super vague (“we try to buy ethically sourced coffee”). Their website makes a very broad claim (“We offer the finest coffees from around the world, sustainably and ethically sourced.”) but the coffees listed coffees on their site gives no info to support this. Come on folks, your entire operation is built around coffee – you need to back up any claims you make.I’d be more inclined to buy some green coffee from Sweet Maria’s in Oakland (for $7) and roast it at home in an old popcorn air popper (which is a lot of fun to learn!). Sweet Maria’s provides a lot more information on each variety of coffee so you know what you’re getting.Artis uses nice cups and plates but it’s a little strange that they don’t have metal spoons – I feel wasteful using a spoon just to stir my coffee a few times and then trashing it. But at least all of their utensils are compostable and they have separate bins for recycling and composting. Their bathroom… Why do I care about their bathroom? It’s a good way to get a feeling for their ethos. Ok, continue. Thank you, your honor! So, their bathroom doesn’t have a low-flow toilet or hand-activated taps; a fairly new place fitted out during the worst drought on record should have these. Their toilet paper and toilet seat covers aren’t recycled or FSC certified. At least there’s a hand dryer.They also have a lot of lights on that are not needed – the wide windows and skylight supply most of the light. This might all seem like nitpicking, but I feel that they are putting a lot of emphasis on style over substance. If they are going to charge $20 for a pound of coffee then it should have a positive social and environmental impact. Artis: I can see on your blog that you supported the International Womens Coffee Alliance in Burundi back in 2013 and that you had a fundraiser for distracted driving awareness in April, but you need to be more forthcoming with information on your coffee, and also more consistent in your approach to sustainability in the store if you want to earn more green stars :)

Comment: Amazing coffee, great ambiance, friendly staff. I just wish theyd offer more seating! I love coming to Artis to study on weekday mornings, but they should have twice as many tables! Space doesnt seem to be an issue...I hope theyll improve this soon.

Comment: Review from 6.1.2015Outstanding coffee every time! I usually get cappuccino or cortado (2 parts espresso 2 parts steamed milk). I also tried some Guatemala beans and they have all sorts of yummy cookies/pastries, like The Cookie Department Espresso Cookie which contains the caffeine equivalent of 1 shot of espresso.

Comment: Such a stellar coffee experience! We walked in and we were greeted by the coffee roaster at the bar. (see photo uploaded) We were instructed to pick out our fresh beans (in barrels) where we would then have them freshly roasted right then and there. While we waited, we tried their vanilla latte and it was excellent! You can not beat fresh vanilla syrup made by the team that works there. This coffeehouse has atmosphere is bright, open and airy with a definitive industrial/warehouse feel to the place. Theres plenty of seating to be found and lots of coffee equipment/gadgets to be purchased at this neat, new-ish coffeehouse on the 4th Street drag.
