Comment: A bit crowded and busy during weekend morning when we visit. ordered an oat latte and a pandan latte, they were both great! A bonus point here is that they partner with hash n dash sandwiches as a pop up on the weekend which makes perfect breakfast with your coffee or drinks. Love the vibe of outside seating.

Comment: I tried the pandan latte. The coffee itself tastes good but I dont taste much pandan flavor. If theres is an option to put more pandan flavoring I would do it. But I didnt have to make any other adjustments. The sweetness level is good and the price is average. $6.50 for an iced pandan latte with almond milk. They have a few seating areas inside and outside the coffee shop; it usually gets filled pretty quickly by students.

Comment: I love the pandan coffee here. It’s one of the only places around that I’ve see this flavor personally. They also have a good selections of pastries and cookies. I recommend the ube snickerdoodle cookie and the everything croissant. Service was fast. There is seating but it’s very limited and the tables are small. I would not recommend doing work from here

Comment: Not a lot of seating but it’s a cute little corner shop that it’s nice to visit! Grabbed their mango matcha latte and it was spot on. Very fruity and flavorful and refreshing like a helpful worker mentioned. They also offer pastries and croissants of different flavors like pistachio, ham & cheese, butter, chocolate. Would need to come back to try one.Parking is street parking or garage parking two blocks down from the shop.

Comment: Top tier coffee fasho 🔥They offer single origin for their espresso and they also have pastries from Neighbor Bakehouse! I ordered a flat white and the piloncillo latte, both of which were very good and properly made. My only knock on the flat white was that it was a little foamy and it was ridiculously hot! For the pastries, we got the everything croissant and pistachio berry croissant, both of which we’d highly recommend! I’ll be back for sure, this is definitely one of the best coffee shops in the South Bay.

Comment: I love Academic Coffee and been visiting for years. I hope this review finds the right person because I’m not sure what happened to their quality and service.I’ve always enjoyed their coffee, when I lived in the area it was my everyday and posted on IG all the time and constantly told friends/ fam to visit them. Now that I live a little away I don’t visit as often, more like once every 3-4 months. So, this is the second time in 6 months when I have been unhappy with the drink that I have ordered. This time though when I went back and mentioned to the person at the cash register that the drink seems to be only milk and I don’t get any vanilla notes and barely taste the espresso, she kinda shrugged it away. I did notice that my drink was ready almost immediately post payment, which I didn’t think much of initially. In my experience espresso drinks take a little more than a few seconds.Note: Also, the minimum tip amount starts around 20% but display shows in $ (I calculated based on total bill amount). This time it was undeserving in my opinion.I hope Academic improves their service and look at how the drinks are being made. I’m willing to go back another time, just coz I’ve always loved this place and want to believe that it was a bad day. Hope I can post a more positive review next time.

Absolutely would come here again. Seems a great spot inside and out for studying or reading. Check out the guestbook in the bathroom.

Comment: Academic is one of the best coffee shops in San Jose. Every single drink Ive tried has been a hit. The flavors of their drinks are perfect, not too sweet but flavorful. My current favorite is the seasonal Pumpkin Spice Hojicha Latte. Pictured is the regular Hojicha Latte. They have a variety of non-dairy milks. The only pastry Ive tried is the Ube Snickerdoodle, which I *highly* recommend. Seating indoors is a bit limited, but there is outdoor seating available as well. Parking is a bit tough, especially on a weekend, but generally you can find parking within a block.Overall, Academic is a great coffee shop that does what it does well. Plus they are local and sustainable! ☕✨

Comment: Academic coffee is a nice little downtown coffee shop, one of the few I rotate between when I ride my bike downtown on weekends. This place though has a nice thing going for it besides its good selection of coffee, most weekends Hash n Dash partners with them to set up shop right outside, so you can get one of their delicious hashery sandwiches with sausage and cheese and egg, and they are pretty damn good and go well with a latte (check out the photos). There is plenty of seating here, sitting inside which can sometimes be a little crowded because of the line that forms, but outside they have a nice patio and additional parking in a special area beneath a tree alongside the road. This ladder area is also where Hash n Dash is set up and will cook their fair right in front of you.The coffee shop also has plenty of pastries and they seem to have a pretty healthy selection. The baristas are always friendly and very efficient serving the customers.I personally enjoy sitting on the patio near the tree and just watching the people chat or walk by, and it is very easy for me to place my bike.

Comment: So close, yet so far. I really wanted to give this the perfect five-star rating that I felt it deserved, but the service level simply wasnt there. I dont even think it was the fault of the employees themselves, its just a cramped layout given the size and the location. The entire coffee experience was a recovery effort starting from the order. As I briefly mentioned, this coffee shop has a very small footprint in a very popular area (next to SJSU). Meaning that if you go there at the wrong time you can end up standing in line for close to 20 minutes before you even get a chance to order your coffee. That was the case for me.Ultimately, I was able to place my standard mocha order for review, but finding a place to wait for my beverage was a reminder how cramped I was. I eventually was able to get my order and immediately headed outside.Once outside, the whole experience changes, theres plenty of seating and sunshine, reminding me why I stopped by in the first place. In conclusion, the coffee was great; the pastries were great; the wait sucked. I would say that it could get better, but lets be honest, we all generally like to drink coffee at the same time, so prepare yourself when visiting.

Comment: I gave 5 stars for the cortado (oatmilk). This was as smooth as it gets, strong enough taste and satiny delight rolling around the tastebuds. This is my drink and they have the touch here, after all it’s all academic. My first visit, I don’t live in the area. I was a bit disappointed in the lack of pastry or bakery options, the drink made up the difference. Also, the drink was serves in a beautiful espresso cup, with saucer. I read a review about the cafe not being/looking enough like a coffee place. This cafe is an example of randomness and I suggest that people let go and enjoy, an opportunity to experience coffee culture (s). The drink list also offers various, outside the box, options. If necessary for piece of mind and celebration of redundancy, I’m sure there is a Starbucks in the near universe.

Comment: For a latte or cold brew with an Asian twist, executed well, try the pandan latte or cold brew. The subtle flavor of pandan is delicious with the espresso and oat milk. The vanilla latte is delicious as well.Recently, I tried their canned coffees as well! The pandan cold brew doesnt really compare to the fresh(?) version. The canned piloncillo cinnamon latte is friggin AWESOME. I would like 10 more of these. As of this review, indoor seating is back open, so beware of people in lines, people waiting, and people dining. Theres no difference in quality for me if you order online vs in-person, but you will save a ton of time on busy days!Parking is a coin toss - they dont have dedicated parking, but plenty of street parking nearby.

Basically, I can drink it only in BB and Linea in SF, but this one was even better. Already planning some business trips to SJ to drink it over and over again!

Comment: Cute small coffee shop. I love the decor and atmosphere of Academic coffee. The menu is diverse yet simple, they have their own signature coffees/lattes such as the Pan latte which I would describe as tasting like the milk you have left over after eating cereal/cheerios. It is a unique flavor and I would def recommend trying it at least once! I wasnt too crazy about the seating, there was only outdoor seating with minimal shade and there was no indoor seating. The staff was super friendly and explained each coffee and their taste very thoroughly. Overall, I would def visit again if I am in the area.

Comment: Academic has very good coffee, the cold brew is my go to choice most visits. Also have milk alternatives, like oat milk for those who are dairy free. The baked goods are also a win they usually have things from Midwife the Baker and Stans Donuts. Our favorites are the almond croissant, expect very flaky w excellent almond paste, and Old Fashion Donut.

Comment: I used to love the cold brew, drip, and Americanos at this place. Service is always great. The three stars is partly because they are still trapped in the Corona mindset- no indoor seating, no bathroom, plexiglass all over, warning signs on the door. The rest of the reason is that the coffee quality isnt quite what it was. Its still good - and its a good place to go on this neighborhood - but it lost its edge and hasnt progressed. They had single origin espresso listed on the menu but didnt have any to offer. Also, the pastries ran out by 10:30 and they only had one savory option, even if in stock. The vegan muffin was amazing though. I like to support all coffee shops and dont like giving a negative review, so this is hopefully feedback for the shop to get focused on coffee quality as we all move on.

Comment: The coffee was rich and creamy. I loved it. Some of their coffee has spicy sauces in them. So please ask the cashier while ordering. I was about to order one and the cashier asked a question to confirm if I know that particular one had a spicy sauce in it. They do not have any indoor seating. There was outdoor seating but it was very busy. Thats understandable given how good their coffee is. They also have some pastries if you are lucky.

Comment: How’s this for modern-day idiocy? 50-year-old white male walks into an empty coffee shop at 3:45 PM to buy a $5 latte and a $11chocolate bar. I only happen to have cash on me today, but they won’t take my money as they only take credit. “How about this,” I say guys, “keep the 20, I don’t need any change.” one would think that for the sake of customer service and a three dollar tip to close out the day, why not make an old man happy and take the cash, but lo and behold, their cashless (and classless) commitment goes beyond their commitment to customer service, and I was turned away. I will never patronize this place again and I suggest others do likewise.

Comment: The menu is smaller than you would find at chain coffee shops, but they make up for its small size by focusing on quality. Their honey habanero latte is amazing and unique, I recommend giving it a try. The iced cinnamon latte remains my go-to and when in person dining returns their cappuccino will also be my favorite hot drink. All of their bakery items are great, their chocolate croissants are mine and my partners favorite. Their muffins are far less sweet than something you would find at Starbucks or a normal bakery. Personally, I love that and their muffins are my favorite while my partner does not like them at all. This is one of my favorite coffee shops near SJSU and I highly recommend giving them a visit.

Comment: Academic Coffee has a very friendly and welcoming environment. The cashier gives a friendly shout out when each persons order is ready. With Covid, you lose a lot of the ambiance with having to order outside. They are limited in their pastries which was one of the reasons I came to this coffee shop. Their in house created syrups are one of their specialities. When we arrived, there were a couple people in front of us,but while we waited, there were about ten people that ordered. We didn’t have to wait very long but the wait was worth it. The coffee isn’t too acidic while the milk provides a nice frothy texture.

Comment: Academic is a nice treat for me just a short distance from home.I stick to plain coffee with half-and-half. Ive tried Ethiopian, Nicaraguan, and Costa Rican to date. I think the best and most consistent of the bunch has been the Nicaraguan. I do find that the flavors and acidity on the brewed coffee fluctuate between visits, so some days are better than others, overall its solid.Main negative critiques comes from my partner whom has only tried two drinks. Decaf Breve Latte and Decaf Americano. Breve used too much half-and-half, and not enough coffee, and foam was lacking. The Decaf Americano we could tell the beans had good flavor, but the drink itself was brewed really weak. It was quite busy, so your mileage may vary. I might try a chai or vanilla latte one of these days and update my review. As for food and pastries....Miso Banana Bread is a top contender for my favorites. Not quite had a banana bread like it in taste and texture, the crispy rice I think is what makes it for me.Chocolate Chip Cookie and Brownie are absolutely awesome, and are worthy of a 5-10 second zap in the microwave for melty bliss. The cookie edges over the brownie slightly just because of the added salt.Orange Sugar Bun is really good, fluffy and moist, the candied orange peel and sugar pearls add a nice touch of flavor and sweetness without going overboard.Cinnamon Roll and Cinnamon Apple Danish take their cinnamon seriously. The roll had some flavor notes possibly cardamom or maybe just a not so typical variety of cinnamon, either way it was very unique and for any die hard lover of cinnamon youd be doing yourself a disservice not to give it a try.Miso Cookie is subtly savory and more on the sweet side. Its a very interesting cookie. Slightly crispy edges and chewy center. Goes really well with their coffee.Ham & Chesse Croissant if it was offered everyday would probably be my go-to. Croissant is crispy and buttery. The ham and cheese on point.Seasonal Lox Bagel and Smoke Trout Bagel were some menu items I decided to give a try since it was available. Both were awesome, the Lox Bagel was hands down way better. All the ingredients were high quality, and super tasty on their own.

Comment: This little coffee and pastry cafe was pleasantly surprising, but it misses the mark just by a little. The coffees are pretty good, but not the best I’ve had, and the pastries, while amazing visually and in description, are a little dry and bland for my liking. And lastly, it’s a tad bit too pricey, but I get that they are in an expensive area and need to make ends meet. Still overall, I really like this cafe and their staff have all been very nice and friendly. It’s one of those places that I really look forward to going back to, even if I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s staff and this expectation that the experience is better than the consumption.

Comment: Awesome experience. The staff were warm and friendly. My latte was better than any of the chain coffee places out there (in my humble opinion). I usually like my lattes with breve (half and half) and sweetened with some kind of sweetener. Here at Academic Coffee, I elected to not have any sweetener. My latte was so rich and creamy that I felt that it didnt need sweetener. Its there if you choose to sweeten it though. Its not a beautiful location but it is clean and has in door and out door seating.

Comment: I loved their ice coffee ($3.50)! Super mild and well rounded flavor, not crazy strong and in-your-face like some ice coffees can be. Great addition to my day. Chocolate croissant ($6) is pretty fantastic, great buttery pastry and chocolate is good quality, not too sweet but not too dark... perfect flakiness on top and crispiness at the ends! Honestly, it was great but a little expensive so next time Ill just go for the coffee and maybe a smaller pastry... ube mochi muffins ($4) from Third Culture are the best! They even sell the churro variety ($4) here, and of course a good selection of the mochi donuts ($4).Barista/cashier was lovely and helpful, very sweet. Very quick service as well, granted it was just an ice coffee and pastry out of the display case but it was ready before I had a chance to out my wallet back in my backpack! The line went by fairly quick as well. Open and bright atmosphere was lovely, lots of people chatting or working at their respective tables. Lots of outdoor seating with varying degrees of shade from a nearby tree. Overall, great quality coffee place but some pastries are a bit expensive... though they are well-crafted and delicious!Update: Tried the ice coffee another time and I regret not asking for what beans they used for the first ice coffee I had here cause (of course!) they change up the beans for the ice coffee. This time was a different coffee, still good but not my favorite flavor profile personally. There was the flavor of - if youve ever tried a cacao bean - that kind of acrid, sourish/acidic flavor that is very distinct. Still very drinkable and not overly strong but man, I am so sad I didnt think to ask exactly what they used for my favorite first cup! Wouldnt change my rating though; this experience just means that despite the small cafe size they have a diverse selection of coffees and flavors to suit your individual taste buds!

Love that they dont charge extra for oatmilk. They let you order in 8oz servings (to go only) which is pretty rare for tea orders. The outdoor seating area was cool so if you are looking to hangout with friends, its a great place.Edit: removed the part about the AC and would suggest the owner to add more charging spot.

Comment: BEST COFFEE IN THE BAY AREA hands down (or up). TEMPLE COFFEE beans and not overpriced. Cappuccinos are spot on. Vanilla Lattes have the perfect amount of flavoring. Did somebody say matcha mochi donut??? Ummm yes, I just did. If you haven’t been here... it’s time to go. NOW. Get out of your seat and GO. Disclaimer: going out to try other coffee shops will not be as fun anymore. Also, if your like me and you try to stick to a weekly coffee allowance, then stop wasting it at other coffee shops that are almost as good as Academic Coffee.

Comment: Exceptionally friendly staff and one of the finer lattes Ive experienced, not to mention beautifully presented and reasonably priced. The shady outdoor seating was basic, but lovely, and the wifi was very good. I will definitely return to this spot.

Comment: Excellent coffee shop. Espresso drinks are well done. I enjoyed my cortado and my wife loved her latte made with Oatly oat milk - not found in most coffee shops. Service is friendly. Its busy but reasonably quiet. Outdoor (dog friendly) and indoor seating. Pastries and donuts looked great. We both loved the Swedish cinnamon pastry with a touch of cardamom, made onsite.

Comment: First, they make the best coffee in downtown San Jose. Second, the staff is friendly, kind, welcoming and genuinely happy to see you there. In a world where baristas can barely crack a smile and increasingly look down on us as if to insist they are doing all us commoners a favor, Academic Coffee is a breath of fresh air.

Comment: Staff and owner are great. This place is becoming an important asset for San Jose. Perhaps the Best Coffee and pastries in Town (next to Forager and Chromatic Coffee) They know their craft and they utilize the temple coffee beans - which are just right (from sacramento)

This is also reflected in the care that they put in preparing your coffee. Cappuccino, cortado, tea... everything is tasty and high quality, even for my italian taste. And I also love their pastry! As all this is combined with a cozy location, you can easily understand why I always start my day here when I am in SJ.

Comment: Academic Coffee was vandalized this past Tuesday, and this was heartbreaking to hear, especially since this incredible coffee shop just celebrated their One Year Anniversary. If youve never been, I highly recommend seeking this place out on 2nd Street; the coffee is fantastic, the aesthetic & vibe is so cool and calming, they have a great shady patio, the pastries are super yummy (I love their Orange Cookies as pictured!), the owners and staff are so friendly, and I encourage everyone to rally and support this coffee shop -- Im a black coffee drinker and usually get their Nitro Cold Brew (amazing), and I ventured out and tried their Organic Chai Latte with Vanilla, and yall, it is sooooo gooooood.

Comment: Just happened to have a car breakdown 0.4 miles from the shop. We went there waiting for AAA to show up and the shop is clean, service w/ a smile and the shop owner recommended I try the mochi muffins. OMG, they are killer good (from a Berkley bakery). Will be going back again for the muffins & of course the coffee.

Comment: What a surprise. I feel like I walked into Portland Oregon with their decor, vibe, and the super friendly baristas. I love how there’s more and more of these third wave coffee shops in the Bay Area - Starbucks and Peet’s are great but these are even better. Keep up the good work, I hope to see them do well!Their oat milk latte superb. The effort they put into each drink is wonderful. The shop is located on a street corner which is highly conducive to spacing out and daydream; that is, what you want in a coffee shop.

Comment: Gem of a coffee shop in downtown San Jose. They took an old, deserted laundromat and turned it into a destination for well-crafted coffee drinks that make you truly appreciate the range of flavors possible within coffee (Cascara cold brew, for example --- brewed with tea made from the skin of coffee fruit). The staples are also consistent and delicious. I usually get the regular cold brew or latte. They have a rotating selection of locally baked fresh pastries. They also provide coffee options for events (cold brew in bulk) and sometimes have events hosted in the space. In addition to the drinks and pastries provided by friendly staff, the space is also well-designed, from the playful mural to the solid wood custom tables throughout. Bathroom has a changing table, too! 👌

Comment: Oh Academic where have you been all my life? Academic is a relative newcomer and by far the best coffee shop in the South Bay. All of their drinks are amazing and somehow more reasonably priced than other places around. The pastries they sell are out of this world and way better than the overpriced Manresa Bread that most cafes in the Bay Area stock. The new location might not be quite as convenient as the pop up, but the fact that theyre now open 7 days a week more than makes up for that.
